    Conduct disorder in girls: neighborhoods, family characteristics, and parenting behaviors

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Little is known about the social context of girls with conduct disorder (CD), a question of increasing importance to clinicians and researchers. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between three social context domains (neighborhood, family characteristics, and parenting behaviors) and CD in adolescent girls, additionally testing for race moderation effects. We predicted that disadvantaged neighborhoods, family characteristics such as parental marital status, and parenting behaviors such as negative discipline would characterize girls with CD. We also hypothesized that parenting behaviors would mediate the associations between neighborhood and family characteristics and CD.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We recruited 93 15–17 year-old girls from the community and used a structured psychiatric interview to assign participants to a CD group (n = 52) or a demographically matched group with no psychiatric disorder (n = 41). Each girl and parent also filled out questionnaires about neighborhood, family characteristics, and parenting behaviors.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Neighborhood quality was not associated with CD in girls. Some family characteristics (parental antisociality) and parenting behaviors (levels of family activities and negative discipline) were characteristic of girls with CD, but notll. There was no moderation by race. Our hypothesis that the association between family characteristics and CD would be mediated by parenting behaviors was not supported.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study expanded upon previous research by investigating multiple social context domains in girls with CD and by selecting a comparison group who were not different in age, social class, or race. When these factors are thus controlled, CD in adolescent girls is not significantly associated with neighborhood, but is associated with some family characteristics and some types of parental behaviors. However, the mechanisms underlying these relationships need to be further investigated. We discuss possible explanations for our findings and suggest directions for future research.</p

    Intrauterine devices and endometrial cancer

    The relationship between intrauterine device (IUD) use and the development of endometrial cancer was assessed in data from seven countries that were collected between 1979 and 1988 for a multinational hospital-based case-control study. Two hundred twenty-six cases of endometrial cancer were compared with 1,529 controls matched for age, hospital, and year of interview. No significant association between use of an IUD and risk of endometrial cancer was observed (OR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.4-1.33). There were no trends in risk with respect to duration of use, time since first use, or ages at first or last use. No cases had used a copper IUD (OR = 0, 95% CI = 0- 1.71). Although women over age 55 who had used an IUD were at significantly increased risk, this unexpected finding is based on small numbers of users and requires independent confirmation. These results, along with those from other studies, provide reassurance that risk of endometrial cancer is unlikely to be increased by use of an IU

    Based on its procedural principle, every manufacturing technology affects a variety of properties of the workpiece or product in a characteristic way (Sect. 2.3). The sum of all those properties which comprise geometrical as well as material-related ones is considered as manufacturing-induced properties. While the geometric manufacturing-induced properties are often the reason why a specific technology is chosen by the designer for the manufacturing of a certain product, the material-related manufacturing-induced properties are often seen as by-products of the process. With regard to metal forming, all manufacturing processes inherently influence the mechanical properties of the manufactured material. In many cases, these mechanical manufacturing-induced properties are merely regarded in terms of restrictions in product development. However, with respect to a manufacturing-integrated product development approach, the mechanical properties are of special interest, since we aim at utilizing their full potential to maximize the product performance

    Ultrananocrystalline Diamond Thin Films Functionalized with Therapeutically Active Collagen Networks

    The fabrication of biologically amenable interfaces in medicine bridges translational technologies with their surrounding biological environment. Functionalized nanomaterials catalyze this coalescence through the creation of biomimetic and active substrates upon which a spectrum of therapeutic elements can be delivered to adherent cells to address biomolecular processes in cancer, inflammation, etc. Here, we demonstrate the robust functionalization of ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) with type I collagen and dexamethasone (Dex), an anti-inflammatory drug, to fabricate a hybrid therapeutically active substrate for localized drug delivery. UNCD oxidation coupled with a pH-mediated collagen adsorption process generated a comprehensive interface between the two materials, and subsequent Dex integration, activity, and elution were confirmed through inflammatory gene expression assays. These studies confer a translational relevance to the biofunctionalized UNCD in its role as an active therapeutic network for potent regulation of cellular activity toward applications in nanomedicine

    Vaccination with dendritic cells loaded with tumor apoptotic bodies (Apo-DC) in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia: Effects of various adjuvants and definition of immune response criteria

    We previously demonstrated that autologous dendritic cells that have endocytosed apoptotic bodies of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cells (Apo-DC) can stimulate antileukemic T cell responses in vitro. In this phase I study, we vaccinated 15 asymptomatic CLL patients at five time points with Apo-DC administered intradermally either alone (cohort I), or in combination with subcutaneous granulocyte-macrophage-colony-stimulating-factor (GM-CSF) (cohort II) or with GM-CSF and intravenous low-dose cyclophosphamide (cohort III). Aim of the study was to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of Apo-DC alone or in combination with GM-CSF and low-dose cyclophosphamide in CLL patients. All patients completed the vaccination schedule without dose-limiting toxicity. No objective clinical responses were seen. Vaccine-induced leukemia-specific immune responses were evaluated by IFN-γ ELISpot and proliferation assays over a 52 weeks observation period and immune response criteria were defined. According to these criteria, 10/15 patients were defined as immune responders. The frequency of immune-responding patients was higher in cohorts II (3/5) and III (5/5) than in cohort I (2/5). In order to further characterize the induced immune response, estimation of secreted cytokines and CD107-degranulation assay were performed. Clustering of T and CLL cells was observed in CD107-degranulation assay and visualized by confocal microscopy. Additionally, assessment of regulatory T cells (T ) revealed their significantly lower frequencies in immune responders versus non-responders (P < 0.0001). Cyclophosphamide did not reduce T frequency. In conclusion, vaccination with Apo-DC + GM-CSF and cyclophosphamide was safe and elicited anti-CLL immune responses that correlated inversely with T levels. Lack of clinical responses highlights the necessity to develop more potent vaccine strategies in B cell malignancies
