Developing the Whole Child Through Movement in the Music Classroom

The early twentieth century brought forth some very strong figures in the world of arts pedagogy. Among them were Carl Orff and Emile Jacque-Dalcroze. Both were composers as well as music educators. Both believed that in order for a musician to perform expressively rather than mechanically, one had to feel music in the body. Orff and Dalcroze followers today uphold these men’s idea that movement is an essential part of the music class. Seeking to feel more comfortable and knowledgeable about movement in teaching K-6 general music classes, I set out to research through books, films, my own movement experiences and activites through which I guided my students. Through the process, I discovered how important movement is for complete human development. In this paper I present examples of movement activities that can be incorporated in music classes. All examples have been tested in my classroom. Through the engagement of such activities we can find a means to bring craft beyond function and into the realm of art. We can be enriched through movement in our co-ordination, learning, problem solving, sense of community and healthy well being. We can find a means of self expres- sion as well as an empathy toward others, important ingredients for living in a free world

Improvements to a Class of Distance Matrix Methods for Inferring Species Trees from Gene Trees

Abstract Among the methods currently available for inferring species trees from gene trees, the GLASS method of Mossel and Roch (2010), the Shallowest Divergence (SD) method of Maddison and Knowles (2006), the STEAC method of Liu et al. (2009), and a related method that we call Minimum Average Coalescence (MAC) are computationally efficient and provide branch length estimates. Further, GLASS and STEAC have been shown to be consistent estimators of tree topology under a multispecies coalescent model. However, divergence time estimates obtained with these methods are all systematically biased under the model because the pairwise interspecific gene divergence times on which they rely must be more ancient than the species divergence time. Jewett and Rosenberg (2012) derived an expression for the bias of GLASS and used it to propose an improved method that they termed iGLASS. Here, we derive the biases of SD, STEAC, and MAC, and we propose improved analogues of these methods that we call iSD, iSTEAC, and iMAC. We conduct simulations to compare the performance of these methods with their original counterparts and with GLASS and iGLASS, finding that each of them decreases the bias and mean squared error of pairwise divergence time estimates. The new methods can therefore contribute to improvements in the estimation of species trees from information on gene trees.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/98441/1/cmb%2E2012%2E0042.pd

The goal of this article is to look at the tension between professional identity and political identification as experienced by journalists in the newsrooms of Página/12 and Tiempo Argentino between 2011 and 2015, when the editorial lines of both newspapers were in tune with the national government’s policies. From an ethnographic perspective (Restrepo, 2016), this article addresses the tensions and intersections between journalists’ political identification and that of their media outlets. By analyzing this topic, we can appreciate what values the former identify as part of their professional practice. To do this, we returned to the contributions of labor sociology, specifically to those on symbolic interactionism (Abbott, 1993; Becker, 2006; Becker, 2009; Becker, Geer, Hughes, y Strauss, 1961; Becker y Strauss, 1956; Hughes, 2012 y Geer, 1972) and dramaturgical analysis (Goffman, 2006), in order to study two distinct moments in the process of identification. The first involves the hiring of young journalists and how their expectations, upon entering the world of journalism, are affected by the affinity between their own political identification and the editorial line of the newspaper they now work for. The second moment describes situations, in everyday content production inside the newsroom, in which journalists discuss their newspaper’s stance in relation to certain political events, leading to deviations from the editorial line. After studying these moments, we shall find, for example, that criterias for newsworthiness are not always starting points for journalistic work but are instead frequently called into question. Rather than using predefined parameters to analyze daily newsroom tasks, we shall reconstruct the norms and values of journalistic ethics by looking at the continuous self-reflection undertaken by journalists during their everyday work.O objetivo do artigo é analisar as tensões que surgem entre a identidade profissional e a identificação política dos jornalistas nas redações dos jornais Página/12 e Tiempo Argentino entre 2010 e 2015 durante o governo de Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. Fil: Rosenberg, Laura Alejandra. Get PDF
The article analyzes the origins of the Argentinean newspaper published since 2010 and the factors that made the creation of the cooperative which continues publishing the newspaper possible after the political transition from Kirchnerism to Macrism. Political polarization in the journalistic field was highlighted as a characteristic of the context in which the newspaper appeared, and marked its future until the dissolution of Grupo 23, which edited the publication until January 2016. Two stages of the newspaper are going to be analyzed. The first one refers to the initial period of the newspaper, where the motivations of the journalistic direction in the birth of the new project are explained, as well as the political position that this media outlet assumed. The second stage that is developed refers to the creation of Por Más Tiempo cooperative during post-Kirchnerism. The conditions of possibility that promoted the creation of the cooperative are going to be analyzed. In order to carry out the research, qualitative methodology techniques were implemented. Specifically, observations in the newsroom and interviews with members of this media outlet.Fil: Rosenberg, Laura Alejandra. This article aims to analyze the socialization of journalists in Argentina. A model of analysis is proposed to understand the professional career of media workers of Página/12 and Tiempo Argentino newspapers. This model was constructed from emerged categories of the field work -which was carried out between 2011 and 2015. In line with the epistemological and methodological proposal of the newsmaking studies, the ethnographic techniques like participant observation and interviews were applied to learn about the experiences of younger journalists in the first part of their career. The analysis was developed from an Interactionist Sociology perspective, which emphasizes the way in which people assign meaning to the world from the interactions they establish with others. In this case, we investigated how young journalists apprehended formal and informal roles and rules of the job based on the bonds they established with other members of the journalistic world (colleagues with more experience, chiefs, sources of information, among others).Fil: Rosenberg, Laura Alejandra. Background: Recruiting valid samples of men who have sex with men (MSM) is a key component of the US human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) surveillance and of research studies seeking to improve HIV prevention for MSM. Social media, such as Facebook, may present an opportunity to reach broad samples of MSM, but the extent to which those samples are comparable with men recruited from venue-based, time-space sampling (VBTS) is unknown. Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the comparability of MSM recruited via VBTS and Facebook. Methods: HIV-negative and HIV-positive black and white MSM were recruited from June 2010 to December 2012 using VBTS and Facebook in Atlanta, GA. We compared the self-reported venue attendance, demographic characteristics, sexual and risk behaviors, history of HIV-testing, and HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevalence between Facebook- and VTBS-recruited MSM overall and by race. Multivariate logistic and negative binomial models estimated age/race adjusted ratios. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to assess 24-month retention. Results: We recruited 803 MSM, of whom 110 (34/110, 30.9% black MSM, 76/110, 69.1% white MSM) were recruited via Facebook and 693 (420/693, 60.6% black MSM, 273/693, 39.4% white MSM) were recruited through VTBS. Facebook recruits had high rates of venue attendance in the previous month (26/34, 77% among black and 71/76, 93% among white MSM; between-race P=.01). MSM recruited on Facebook were generally older, with significant age differences among black MSM (P=.02), but not white MSM (P=.14). … See full text for complete abstract

Malignant Granular Cell Tumor of the Back: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Malignant granular cell tumors are rare, intensely aggressive entities. This paper presents a case of a large rapidly recurrent malignant granular cell tumor with regional and distal metastases on the back of a 54-year-old Cuban man. The primary tumor recurred within six months of the original wide local excision and with satellite lesions apparent at twelve months, and the mass was diagnosed using the histological criteria established by Fanburg-Smith et al. for malignant granular cell tumors. By fifteen months, right axillary lymphadenopathy, multiple satellite lesions, pulmonary nodules, and distant metastasis in the right thigh were present. At sixteen months, wide local excision of recurrent mass and local satellite masses along with right axillary dissection and placement of Integra with subsequent split-thickness skin graft were performed by surgical oncology and plastic surgery teams. The surgical specimen measured 32.0 × 13.5 × 5.5 cm, containing multiple homogeneous masses with the largest mass 22.0 × 9.0 × 4.6 cm. Following surgery, patient was started on Pazopanib 800 mg/day based on phase III randomized trial data in the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas showing this as a potential novel therapy for malignant granular cell tumors
