Numerical modeling of the interstellar medium in galactic disks
We have been developing detailed hydrodynamic models of the global interstellar medium in the hope of understanding the mass and volume occupied by various phases, as well as their structure and kinematics. In our model, the gas is modeled by one fluid while representative Pop 1 stars are modeled by a second fluid. The two fluids are coupled in that the gas forms into stars at a rate given by a Schmidt law while stellar mass loss returns matter into the gas phase (on a time scale of 100 Myr). Also, the stars heat the gas through stellar winds and the gas cools through optically thin radiation. The time behavior of these two fluids is studied in two spatial dimensions with the Eulerian finite difference numerical hydrodynamic code Zen. The two spatial dimensions are along the plane of a disk (x, total length of 2 kpc) and perpendicular to the disk (z, total height of +/- 15 kpc) and a galactic gravitational field in the z direction, typical of that at the solar circle, is imposed upon the simulation; self-gravity and rotation are absent. For the boundary conditions, outflow is permitted at the top and bottom of the grid (z = +/- 15 kpc) while periodic boundary conditions are imposed upon left and right sides of the grid. As initial conditions, we assumed a gaseous distribution like that seen for the H1 by earlier researchers, although the results are insensitive to the initial conditions. We have run simulations in which the heating due to stars, parameterized as a stellar wind velocity, a, is varied from low (a = 150 km/s), to intermediate (a = 300 km/s), to high (a = 600 km/s). Since the intermediate case is roughly equivalent to the Galactic energy injection rate from supernovae, this summary will concentrate on results from this simulation
Charged Condensate and Helium Dwarf Stars
White dwarf stars composed of carbon, oxygen or heavier elements are expected
to crystallize as they cool down below certain temperatures. Yet, simple
arguments suggest that the helium white dwarf cores may not solidify, mostly
because of zero-point oscillations of the helium ions that would dissolve the
crystalline structure. We argue that the interior of the helium dwarfs may
instead form a macroscopic quantum state in which the charged helium-4 nuclei
are in a Bose-Einstein condensate, while the relativistic electrons form a
neutralizing degenerate Fermi liquid. We discuss the electric charge screening,
and the spectrum of this substance, showing that the bosonic long-wavelength
fluctuations exhibit a mass gap. Hence, there is a suppression at low
temperatures of the boson contribution to the specific heat -- the latter being
dominated by the specific heat of the electrons near the Fermi surface. This
state of matter may have observational signatures.Comment: 10 pages; v2: to appear in JCAP, brief comments and section titles

Nonet Symmetry and Two-Body Decays of Charmed Mesons
The decay of charmed mesons into pseudoscalar (P) and vector (V) mesons is
studied in the context of nonet symmetry. We have found that it is badly broken
in the PP channels and in the P sector of the PV channels as expected from the
non-ideal mixing of the \eta and the \eta'. In the VV channels, it is also
found that nonet symmetry does not describe the data well. We have found that
this discrepancy cannot be attributed entirely to SU(3) breaking at the usual
level of 20--30%. At least one, or both, of nonet and SU(3) symmetry must be
very badly broken. The possibility of resolving the problem in the future is
also discussed.Comment: 9 pages, UTAPHY-HEP-
Effects of arcing due to spacecraft charging on spacecraft survival
A quantitative assessment of the hazard associated with spacecraft charging and arcing on spacecraft systems is presented. A literature survey on arc discharge thresholds and characteristics was done and gaps in the data and requirements for additional experiments were identified. Calculations of coupling of arc discharges into typical spacecraft systems were made and the susceptibility of typical spacecraft to disruption by arc discharges was investigated. Design guidelines and recommended practices to reduce or eliminate the threat of malfunction and failures due to spacecraft charging/arcing were summarized
Trauma histories of men and women in residential drug treatment: The Scottish evidence
This article focuses on self-reported child neglect and abuse in residential drug treatment drawing on data from clients in Scotland collected 1996-1999. It notes the lack of adoption of regular screening using validated tools of childhood trauma in men and women. The authorsâ findings suggest that the prevalence of childhood abuse histories are higher in female drug users than male drug users but recognises that even with standardised tools there is a wealth of diverse categories of severity of abuse that warn against broad treatment plans for âthe traumatisedâ
Searching for the MSW Enhancement
We point out that the length scale associated with the MSW effect is the
radius of the Earth. Therefore to verify matter enhancement of neutrino
oscillations, it will be necessary to study neutrinos passing through the
Earth. For the parameters of MSW solutions to the solar neutrino problem, the
only detectable effects occur in a narrow band of energies from 5 to 10 MeV. We
propose that serious consideration be given to mounting an experiment at a
location within 9.5 degrees of the equator.Comment: 10 pages, RevTe
Papapetrou Energy-Momentum Tensor for Chern-Simons Modified Gravity
We construct a conserved, symmetric energy-momentum (pseudo-)tensor for
Chern-Simons modified gravity, thus demonstrating that the theory is Lorentz
invariant. The tensor is discussed in relation to other gravitational
energy-momentum tensors and analyzed for the Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrom,
and FRW solutions. To our knowledge this is the first confirmation that the
Reissner-Nordstrom and FRW metrics are solutions of the modified theory.Comment: 8 pages; typos corrected, references fixed, some calculations

A gauge theoretical view of the charge concept in Einstein gravity
We will discuss some analogies between internal gauge theories and gravity in
order to better understand the charge concept in gravity. A dimensional
analysis of gauge theories in general and a strict definition of elementary,
monopole, and topological charges are applied to electromagnetism and to
teleparallelism, a gauge theoretical formulation of Einstein gravity.
As a result we inevitably find that the gravitational coupling constant has
dimension , the mass parameter of a particle dimension ,
and the Schwarzschild mass parameter dimension l (where l means length). These
dimensions confirm the meaning of mass as elementary and as monopole charge of
the translation group, respectively. In detail, we find that the Schwarzschild
mass parameter is a quasi-electric monopole charge of the time translation
whereas the NUT parameter is a quasi-magnetic monopole charge of the time
translation as well as a topological charge. The Kerr parameter and the
electric and magnetic charges are interpreted similarly. We conclude that each
elementary charge of a Casimir operator of the gauge group is the source of a
(quasi-electric) monopole charge of the respective Killing vector.Comment: LaTeX2e, 16 pages, 1 figure; enhanced discussio
Large-scale general practice in England: what can we learn from the literature?
Traditional general practice is changing. Three-quarters of practices are now working
collaboratively in larger-scale organisations â albeit with varying degrees of ambition and
organisational integration. Policy-makers and practitioners have high hopes for these
organisations and their potential to transform services both within primary care and
beyond. But can we be confident that they can live up to these expectations? This report
presents findings of an extensive literature review on the subject of large-scale general
practice, and contributes to a stream of work by the Nuffield Trust in this area, details of
which can be found at: www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk/large-scale-general-practice
Energy-Momentum Distribution: Some Examples
In this paper, we elaborate the problem of energy-momentum in General
Relativity with the help of some well-known solutions. In this connection, we
use the prescriptions of Einstein, Landau-Lifshitz, Papapetrou and M\"{o}ller
to compute the energy-momentum densities for four exact solutions of the
Einstein field equations. We take the gravitational waves, special class of
Ferrari-Ibanez degenerate solution, Senovilla-Vera dust solution and
Wainwright-Marshman solution. It turns out that these prescriptions do provide
consistent results for special class of Ferrari-Ibanez degenerate solution and
Wainwright-Marshman solution but inconsistent results for gravitational waves
and Senovilla-Vera dust solution.Comment: 20 pages, accepted for publication in Int. J. Mod. Phys.
