    Asian American women\u27s resilience: An integrative review

    Asian American women face unique stressors that threaten their overall health and well-being. However, resilience is a phenomenon that allows individuals to develop positive adaptation despite adversities and challenges. This integrative review is conducted in order to explore the current state of knowledge regarding the resilience of Asian American women. Twelve databases were used to identify related articles: Academic Search Premier, CINAHL, ERIC, Ethnic NewsWatch, GenderWatch, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global, ProQuest Sociological Abstracts, PsycINFO, PubMed, SAGE (Psychology and Sociology collections), Scopus, and Web of Science. Twenty-one research studies met the inclusion criteria of the integrative review. Five common themes emerged from the analysis of the studies: (a) resilience as conceptualized as a coping strategy, (b) resilience as related to social support and network, (c) resilience as an enduring phenomenon, (d) resilience as connected to bicultural identity, and (e) resilience as an emancipatory perspective and experience. These themes imply that resilience is a developmental process, culture has a significant influence on resilience, and Asian American women are a vulnerable and marginalized group. Further recommendations for nursing practice and research are discussed as related to these implications

    International survey of integrated financial sector supervision

    Despite the intense debate on the advantages and disadvantages of adopting integrated supervision that has taken place in recent years, little is known about the experiences of countries that have adopted it and the obstacles and challenges they have faced to implement it. In an attempt to shed light on this area, the authors present the results of a survey conducted in a group of 15 countries that have adopted integrated supervision. After a brief review of the literature on integrated supervision, the authors examine four topics: 1) The reasons cited by this group of countries for establishing an integrated supervisory agency. 2) The scope of regulatory and supervisory powers of these agencies. 3) The progress of these agencies in harmonizing their regulatory and supervisory practices across the intermediaries they supervise. 4) The practical problems faced by policymakers in adopting integrated supervision. The survey revealed that the group of integrated supervisory agencies is not as homogeneous as it seems. Important differences arise with regard to the scope of regulatory and supervisory powers the agencies have been given. In fact, contrary to popular belief, less than 50 percent of the agencies can be categorized as mega-supervisors. Another finding is that in most countries progress toward the harmonization of prudential regulation andsupervision across financial intermediaries remains limited. Interestingly, the survey revealed that practically all countries believe they have achieved a higher degree of harmonization in the regulation and supervision of banks and securities companies than between banks and insurance firms. The survey also identified some practical problems faced by this group of countries in establishing their unified supervisory agencies.     Regional carbon dioxide permit trading in the United States: coalition choices for Pennsylvania

    An overview is given of the growing number of regional associations in which states have entered into voluntary arrangements to limit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In particular, in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a number of northeastern states have joined to create a regional GHG cap and trade program, beginning with the utility industry. Analysis is made of the five key issues relating to these current and potential climate action associations: the extent of the total and individual state mitigation cost-savings across all sectors from potential emission permit trading coalitions; the size of permit markets associated with the various coalitions; the relative advantages of joining various coalitions for swing states such as Pennsylvania; the implications of the exercise of market power in the permit market; and the total and individual state/country cost-savings from extending the coalition beyond US borders.     Teacher Perceptions Of The Implementation Of The Common Core State Standards In The Schools Of The Florida Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists: A Qualitative Case Study

    Problem This qualitative case study focused on educators who teach in the Florida Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and their perceptions regarding the adequacy of the Professional Development to support the implementation of the CCSS; how they are implementing the CCSS in the classroom in terms of planning, teaching, and assessing; and their perceptions regarding the impact of the CCSS on student learning. Method The study included six participants who taught in six different schools from the various regions where the Florida Conference schools are located. The participants varied in age, ethnicity, number of years in the classroom, and the size of their schools as indicated by the number of teachers at the school. In-depth interviews were conducted and two in-school visitations and classroom observations allowed for collections of field data. Results Data analysis of the interviews and classroom observations resulted in multiple codes or categories of perceptions. The study revealed that participants took part in a variety of professional learning but they did not receive adequate or formal training to support the implementation of the CCSS nor did they receive adequate planning to teach the Mathematics in the context of the shifts of the CCSS. However, once participants received introductory training from the conference, they continued with their own study and research about the CCSS which contributed to their having a positive impact on their teaching and student learning. Conclusions An investigation of the heart of the various categories yielded three themes: An array of learning- experiences in a variety of learning opportunities; a call for specificity in learning–the need for coherence between training and the CCSS adoption; and a drive for effectiveness in learning and teaching- to ensure teachers and learners success

    Molecular absorption in variable brightest cluster galaxies

    Supermassive black holes devour immense quantities of mass from their surroundings, and in doing so have a profound effect upon the galaxy they reside in. Most of the mass they consume is thought to be in the form of cold molecular gas clouds, but the ways in which these form and migrate to the supermassive black hole are still uncertain. This thesis aims to reveal the properties of molecular clouds in the cores of the Universe’s most massive galaxies through observations - determining their typical mass, temperature, kinematics, and the manner in which they find their way into the galaxies. This is achieved by a new observing technique which takes advantage of the bright and compact active galactic nucleus which encompasses the central supermassive black hole of many large galaxies. As molecular clouds pass in front of this region, they cast shadows. These shadows are signatures of the clouds' properties and make it possible to study them, often individually. These studies are also linked to the variability of active galactic nuclei, which is directly dependant on supermassive black hole accretion

    Numerical analysis of cement panels reinforced with galvanized iron or polypropylene meshes

    This paper deals with the numerical analysis of panels reinforced with galvanized iron (GI) or polypropylene (PP) meshes. It has been a common practice to use galvanized iron meshes as reinforcement in panels and is popularly called as ferrocement panels. Elevated humidity level and presence of salts can lead to corrosion of these galvanized iron meshes, leading to reduced service life. A rust-freepolypropylene mesh can be used as an alternate to the steel mesh. This paper presents numerical analysis in ANSYS Workbench based on an experimental study published in the literature” Comparative study of ferrocement panels reinforced with galvanized iron and polypropylene meshes”. A total of 16 rectangular panels tested in flexure was analyzed. Out of 16 panels, 8 were reinforced with GI mesh and 8 with PP mesh. The specimens were simply supported on two short edges and subjected to four-point bending. The parameters investigated include thickness of panels, volume fraction and the material of the mesh. All the GI mesh panels showed better strength than the corresponding PP mesh reinforcedcement panels. However, PP mesh panels exhibited better ductility as compared to GI mesh panels. An increase of 54% is noticed in 40mm thick panels reinforced with GI mesh, when compared to 20mm thick panels. Similarly, an increase of 83% is noticed in 40mm thick panels reinforced with PP mesh, when compared to 20mm thick panels. The results of numerical analysis were found to be comparable with the corresponding experimental results
