This study sought to determine whether Franco-period conservatism and traditionalist values played a role in the portrayal of women, as well as gender violence, in the post-Transition cinema of Pedro Almodóvar and Icíar Bollaín. Four of Almodóvar's movies were studied and categorized in two parts: pre and post 2000's. From Bollaín, three movies were studied, all released after the year 2000. The year 2000 is marked to represent a change in Spanish society's views of gender violence and governmental action was taken to protect women in abusive relationships. The study finds that while traditionalist ideals from the Franco regime are clearly represented in both Almodóvar and Bollaín's films, the purpose is primarily to show a distinction between the oppressive period against women and the obstacles women must battle for equal liberties in relationships and society after the Transition, showing that although Francisco Franco has not been in power, the morals from his time as dictator have a lasting effect on women in Spain. No embargoAcademic Major: Spanis

Marketing an Established Institutional Repository: Marquette Libraries’ Research Stewardship Survey

    Get PDF
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss the results of Marquette University Libraries’ survey measuring faculty knowledge and attitudes about the institution’s repository, for the purposes of creating a marketing plan for the institutional repository (IR). Design/methodology/approach The paper adopts a quantitative approach through the use of a survey. Findings Like many other endeavors to measure faculty engagement with the IR, the investigators discovered that faculty knowledge of the IR is not universal. Moreover, the perceived values and motivators for faculty use of the IR were also not surprising, with faculty viewing online dissemination of their work to be the most valuable feature offered by the IR, and furthering their own careers was the prime motivator. The importance of continual and varied methods of marketing is reaffirmed. Originality/value Whereas many articles on faculty recruitment for IRs agree on the importance of marketing, very few suggest specific strategies. The investigators make suggestions for continual and varied marketing methods based on their findings

This poster illustrates the planning of a strategic marketing campaign for Marquette University\u27s institutional repository, E-Publications@Marquette. The IR was established in 2008 for the deposit of theses and dissertations and has expanded to include faculty publications and research. Despite active participation by some faculty, universal participation remains an elusive goal. The Coordinators of Digital Programs and Marketing and Outreach collaborated to better promote the services and capabilities of the IR. This process involved the identification of faculty participation and needs as well as an assessment of the IR’s capabilities in addressing those needs. Faculty participation was identified through the faculty permissions database, providing an accurate number of faculty contributors. A needs assessment survey was sent to Marquette University faculty, identifying areas of potential growth. Consideration was given to the IR’s ability to meet the identified needs. Equipment, staffing, software, and other resources were evaluated. Based upon the assessment survey and the IR’s available resources, planning for a promotional plan and the evaluation of its effectiveness can then occur

Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management; and, (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division; in conjunction with the Leaders for Global Operations Program at MIT, 2011.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 50).This thesis investigates the feasibility of using a complex model with a Monte Carlo simulation model to forecast the financial, personnel, and manufacturing capacity resources needed for biologic drug development. Accurate forecasting is integral across industries in order to make strong longterm, strategic decisions and an area many companies struggle with. The resources required for the development of a biologic drug are especially hard to estimate due to the variability in the time and probability of success of each development phase. However, in the pharmaceutical industry getting products to market faster allows the company more time to recoup the substantial development investments before the patent expires and also potentially has a large impact on a company's market share. For these reasons, Novartis Biologics wanted to develop a simulation model to provide an objective opinion and assist them in their long-range planning. This thesis describes the design, development, and functionalities of the resultant model. During validation runs, the model demonstrated accuracy of greater than 90% when compared against historical data for headcount, number of campaigns, costs, and projects per year. In addition, the model contains Monte Carlo simulation capabilities to allow users to forecast variability and test the sensitivity of the results. This proves the model can be confidently used by project management, operations, and finance to predict their respective future resource needs.by Emily Edwards.S.M.M.B.A

Speedy Trial as a Viable Challenge to Chronic Underfunding in Indigent-Defense Systems

    Get PDF
Across the country, underresourced indigent-defense systems create delays in taking cases to trial at both the state and federal levels. Attempts to increase funding for indigent defense by bringing ineffective assistance of counsel claims have been thwarted by high procedural and substantive hurdles, and consequently these attempts have failed to bring significant change. This Note argues that, because ineffective assistance of counsel litigation is most likely a dead end for system-wide reform, indigent defenders should challenge the constitutionality of underfunding based on the Sixth Amendment guarantee of speedy trial. Existing speedy trial jurisprudence suggests that the overworking and furloughing of indigent defense attorneys that delay bringing cases to trial should be counted against the government when determining a speedy trial violation. And in light of the standards for bringing a speedy trial claim, asserting a violation of speedy trial may actually place a lower burden on the defendant than making an ineffective assistance claim. Finally, this Note contends that, in systems with the most egregious delays, defender organizations should seek structural injunctions mandating increased resource allocation to protect the right to speedy trial

The Underground Mine Education Center (UMEC) and World Museum of Mining facilities began as shallow underground mines in the 1880’s during the mining boom that populated Butte, Montana. The UMEC is a multi-disciplinary facility that provides an on-campus underground laboratory environment and a place for students to learn and practice practical underground mining techniques; therefore, the longevity of the facility is important to Montana Tech. The goal of this project is to develop a Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP) for the UMEC and World Museum of Mining facilities. The World Museum of Mining (Orphan Girl) and UMEC (Orphan Boy) facilities are unique due to the shallow depth of underground mining activities that resumed in 2005 and in 2012, respectively. The Orphan Boy and Orphan Girl mines are connected at the 100-level. Ground support methods in these facilities consist of historic timber square sets in older workings, rock bolts with mesh, and some shotcreted areas in current workings. The GCMP contains a schedule for routine observational checks of the support systems to inspect for mesh tension, wire breakage, rock bolt plate bending, bolt head deformation, and shotcrete cracking (Carlisle, 2015). The GCMP defines a list of minimum geotechnical standards to uphold while developing new headings in these facilities. To construct the GCMP, geologic and geotechnical profiles for each mine were developed to aid in identifying areas of weakness due to rock alteration and/or adverse jointing caused by faulting or seismic activity. Locations in the UMEC that are believed stable regions will become permanent control survey regions to allow accurate measurements to monitor weaker areas for movement. A scanline survey (SLS) was conducted to determine the general direction joints in the granite occur. A joint surface map was created using Maptek Vulcan software. Rock support assessments based on the joint surfaces were completed using Rocscience DIPS software

Evaluating CMSRU student clinic diabetic patients\u27 hemoglobin A1c values, adherence to laboratory services, and potential barriers to care (Poster)

Abstract Medical schools often have student-run clinics that give medical students the opportunity to have increased clinical exposure. Often, the clinics provide free or a reduced cost of care for patients and target underserved populations. Current research regarding medical student-run clinics is few and far between. The research that does exist usually targets investigating the effect of the clinics on medical student education, while fewer studies exist that target investigating the actual care that patients receive. In order to increase the number of studies investigating patient care at student-run clinics, this retrospective chart review sought to determine whether Cooper Medical School of Rowan University’s student-run clinic adequately evaluates diabetic patients’ hemoglobin A1c level through lab referrals. It also strived to determine whether patients are able to adhere to those lab referrals and whether those patients have any documented social barriers to health that are preventing them from adhering to lab services. The chart review, of 100 patients diagnosed with type II diabetes, found that students do refer patients to lab services, and that patients do go to the labs. However, patients often are lost to follow-up, and their social history is often not documented in the electronic medical record. In addition, there was no significant improvement in two consecutive hemoglobin A1c values collected from patients’ charts. These results suggest that while the clinic is adequately assessing a core measure for diabetes care, it is not adequately assessing patients’ social needs or working on improving patients’ hemoglobin A1c levels
