Rawls in Portugal and Spain

First, this article puts forth a political and cultural explanation for the fact that the work of Rawls and other American liberal analytic political philosophers was neglected in Portugal during the 1970s and 1980s. Second, the article describes Portuguese reactions to Rawls's ideas in the 1990s, focusing on commentaries by scholars and `public intellectuals'. Throughout this period, there was a gradual shift from glib partisan judgements to more careful responses. Third, the reception of Rawls in Portugal is compared with the reception in Spain. This comparison shows that both broad social context and the nature of academia tended to be more hospitable to Rawls in Spain than in Portugal. Ética, tecnologia e democracia: a avaliação de tecnologias controversas em conferências de cidadãos

OS ESTUDOS DE ÉTICA E FILOSOFIA POLÍTICA SOBRE TECNOLOGIAS CONTROVERSAS – NO ÂMBITO DA INVESTIGAÇÃO E DA PRÁTICA MÉDICAS, da produção de energias poluentes, do desenvolvimento de organismos geneticamente modifi cados, etc. – tendem a usar o método habitual nestas disciplinas. Ou seja, os investigadores avaliam a tecnologia em causa de acordo com a perspectiva ética que favorecem. Assim, por exemplo, aqueles que têm um ponto de vista utilitarista tentam estabelecer, independentemente de qualquer restrição deontológica, se a tecnologia em causa contribui ou não para o bem-estar agregado da sociedade. Da mesma forma, os que partem de um ponto de vista deontológico intentam determinar de que forma as restrições e obrigações especiais determinadas por essa perspectiva incidem sobre a tecnologia em apreço. Aliás, esta forma habitual de encarar os temas do desenvolvimento tecnológico existe também naqueles cuja perspectiva, antes de ser filosófica, é de cariz religioso e baseada no código moral de uma religião particular. Também eles visam uma avaliação, por assim, dizer, a partir “de fora”, i.e., a partir de um código moral já estabelecido e justificado, considerando a tecnologia a avaliar como uma aplicação de princípios mais gerais, operada através do juízo moral. The Centre for Ethics, Politics and Society of the University of Minho decided to mark these events by organising a special tribute to Rawls in the framework of the Braga Meetings on Ethics and Political Philosophy, which it organises every year in June. In this context, it was possible to count on the participation —online, due to the Covid-19 pandemic—of Professors Samuel Scheffler (New York University) and Samuel Freeman (University of Pennsylvania), as well as on some dozens of original papers on our author.
