Mycelial biomass of edible mushrooms Pleurotus ostreatus, Lentinula edodes and Auricularia auricula-judae was produced in submerged culture. Cheese whey-based medium was used as the nutrient source. Mushrooms were evaluated for determination of fatty acid content though gas chromatography of methyl esters. Biomass was characterized by high content of unsatured fatty acids showing both linoleic and oleic as the most abundant acids.Produziram-se biomassas dos cogumelos comestíveis Pleurotus ostreatus, Lentinula edodes e Auricularia auricula-judae em cultura submersa, utilizando-se soro de leite (meio de cultivo) como fonte nutricional. Os cogumelos foram avaliados quanto à sua composição de ácidos graxos pelo método de cromatografia de fase gasosa para ésteres metílicos. As biomassas foram caracterizadas pelo alto conteúdo de ácidos graxos insaturados, predominando os ácidos oléicos e linoléicos

Composição química e avaliação da atividade antimicrobiana do óleo essencial das folhas de Piper malacophyllum (C. Presl.) C. DC.

This work reports the chemical composition as well as the antibacterial, antifungal and antiparasitic activities of the leaf essential oil from Piper malacophyllum. The oil was extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC-FID, GC-MS and polarimetry. Among the 28 compounds identified, (+)-camphor was the major constituent. The essential oil showed activity against most of the microorganisms tested, especially antifungal action, with a MIC of 500 µg mL-1 against Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Cryptococcus neoformans. This is the first study reporting the composition and biological properties of leaf essential oil from P. malacophyllum

Tinea nigra: successful treatment with topical butenafine Tinea nigra: tratamento bem-sucedido com butenafina tópica

The authors report a case of Tinea nigra in an 8-year-old child, male, from Itajaí, SC, Brazil, with lesions of the macular hyperchromic type, unique, asymptomatic, localized in the right palmar area. The lesion was treated with the topical antifungal butenafine, with remission of symptoms and without recurrence at follow-up for two years.Os autores relatam um caso de Tinea nigra observada em criança com oito anos de idade, do sexo masculino, procedente de Itajaí, Estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil, com lesão do tipo mácula hipercrômica, única, assintomática e localizada na região palmar direita. A lesão foi tratada com o antifúngico tópico butenafina com remissão completa do quadro e sem recorrência no acompanhamento por dois anos

Estudo duplo cego com Isoconazol e Terbinafina tópicos no tratamento de um paciente com Tinea nigra plantaris bilateral e sugestões para novos diagnósticos diferenciais

The authors report a case of bilateral Tinea nigra plantaris treated through a double-blind study with the topical antifungal agents Isoconazole and Terbinafine. The objective of the study was to clinically compare the efficacy of these two topical antifungal agents on days 10, 20 and 30 of the treatment. No significant clinical differences were found, as all the plantar lesions regressed completely by the end of the treatment. Our conclusion was that in the case reported, the topical antifungal agents Isoconazole and Terbinafine demonstrated identical efficacy as a clinical cure. We also suggest the inclusion of injuries caused by arthropods of the Diplopoda Class in the differential diagnosis of Tinea nigra plantaris, due to the persistent acral hyperpigmentation

Antimicrobial activity of Rubus imperialis (Rosaceae)

En este trabajo se evaluó la posible actividad antimicrobiana del extracto metanólico crudo (CE), de algunas fracciones, tales como hexano, acetato de etilo y butanol, así como de cuatro compuestos puros obtenidos de raíces de Rubus imperialis. Las concentraciones inhibitorias mínimas (MIC) fueron determinadas usando el método de la dilución en agar. Los experimentos demostraron que el extracto y algunas fracciones exhibieron acción antimicrobiana, particularmente contra las bacterias Gram-positivas probadas, con valores de MIC entre 0,5 y 2,0 mg/mL.In this work the possible antimicrobial activity of crude methanol extract (CE), hexane, ethyl acetate and butanol fractions, as well as four pure compounds obtained from Rubus imperialis roots was evaluated. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined using the agar dilution method. The experiments showed that the extract and some fractions exhibited antimicrobial action, particularly against the Gram-positive bacteria tested, with MIC values between 0.5 and 2.0 mg/mL.Colegio de Farmacéuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aire
