    An incremental deformation model of arterial dissection

    We develop a mathematical model for a small axisymmetric tear in a residually stressed and axially pre-stretched cylindrical tube. The residual stress is modelled by an opening angle when the load-free tube is sliced along a generator. This has application to the study of an aortic dissection, in which a tear develops in the wall of the artery. The artery is idealised as a single-layer thick-walled axisymmetric hyperelastic tube with collagen fibres using a Holzapfel–Gasser–Ogden strain-energy function, and the tear is treated as an incremental deformation of this tube. The lumen of the cylinder and the interior of the dissection are subject to the same constant (blood) pressure. The equilibrium equations for the incremental deformation are derived from the strain energy function. We develop numerical methods to study the opening of the tear for a range of material parameters and boundary conditions. We find that decreasing the fibre angle, decreasing the axial pre-stretch and increasing the opening angle all tend to widen the dissection, as does an incremental increase in lumen and dissection pressure

    Transitions during cephalopod life history: the role of habitat, environment, functional morphology and behaviour

    Cephalopod life cycles generally share a set of stages that take place in different habitats and are adapted to specific, though variable, environmental conditions. Throughout the lifespan, individuals undertake a series of brief transitions from one stage to the next. Four transitions were identified: fertilisation of eggs to their release from the female (1), from eggs to paralarvae (2), from paralarvae to subadults (3) and from subadults to adults (4). An analysis of each transition identified that the changes can be radical (i.e. involving a range of morphological, physiological and behavioural phenomena and shifts in habitats) and critical (i.e. depending on environmental conditions essential for cohort survival). This analysis underlines that transitions from eggs to paralarvae (2) and from paralarvae to subadults (3) present major risk of mortality, while changes in the other transitions can have evolutionary significance. This synthesis suggests that more accurate evaluation of the sensitivity of cephalopod populations to environmental variation could be achieved by taking into account the ontogeny of the organisms.     Cephalopods of the Benguela Current off Namibia: new additions and considerations on the genus Lycoteuthis

    The present study contributes new information on the cephalopods off Namibia, contains the first record of Ornithoteuthis volatilis (Sasaki, 1915) in the Atlantic, and adds records of six species in the Benguela Current and three species in Namibian waters. The presence of certain species seldom encountered in the Benguela Current has been confirmed. A compilation of the cephalopod fauna off Namibia had also been included, listing 65 species. Additional morphological data on Stoloteuthis leucoptera, Lycoteuthis lorigera, Architeuthis sp., Pholidoteuthis boschmai, Ornithoteuthis volatilis, Eledone nigra, and Graneledone sp. have been provided. The status of the genus Lycoteuthis has been reviewed in the light of the first collection of Lycoteuthis lorigera (Steenstrup, 1875) males in the Atlantic, and Lycoteuthis diadema (Chun, 1900) has been considered to be a synonym for Lycoteuthis loriger
