Book review: the trouble with pleasure: deleuze and psychoanalysis by Aaron Schuster
In The Trouble with Pleasure: Deleuze and Psychoanalysis, Aaron Schuster explores Gilles Deleuze’s complex relationship with psychoanalysis, in particular Lacanian theory, in order to ‘short circuit’ contemporary understandings of desire and pleasure. Traversing topics such as pessimism, complaint, the pleasure principle, the death drive, lethargy and schizophrenia, this is a rich and thorough study of the psychoanalytic history of pleasure, writes Sofia Ropek Hewson
Book review: sex, needs and queer culture: from liberation to the post-gay by David Alderson
If corporate backing for Pride events is one example of queer subcultures becoming increasingly commercialised, does this threaten the capacity to resist or might capitalism be progressive for queer subjects? In Sex, Needs and Queer Culture: From Liberation to the Post-Gay, David Alderson draws upon the work of Herbert Marcuse and Raymond Williams to examine processes of assimilation and resistance as well as the distinctions between countercultural and subcultural movements. Although she questions the particular focus on gay male culture, Sofia Ropek Hewson welcomes this rich and absorbing text for probing into the present relationship between capitalism, queer culture and political resistance
Book review: cultural studies 1983: a theoretical history by Stuart Hall (edited by Jennifer Daryl Slack and Lawrence Grossberg)
Cultural Studies 1983: A Theoretical History offers a posthumous collection of lectures by influential cultural theorist Stuart Hall, given to students at the University of Illinois in 1983, covering such topics as the formation of Cultural Studies as a ‘political project’ and Hall’s theorisation of hegemony. Edited by Jennifer Daryl Slack and Lawrence Grossberg, Hall’s insights feel fresh, galvanising and both timeless and timely, writes Sofia Ropek Hewson, underscoring the importance of long-term political struggle as ‘the work we need to do’ – and positioning Cultural Studies at the heart of this
Book review: awkward politics: technologies of popfeminist activism by Carrie Smith-Prei and Maria Stehle
How have digital tools changed and altered the goals, meanings and reception of contemporary feminist activism? In Awkward Politics: Technologies of Popfeminist Activism, Carrie Smith-Prei and Maria Stehle use ‘awkwardness’ as a prism through which to think about 21st-century feminist movements that utilise transnational media from hashtags to film, literature, theory and blogs. This is not only a thorough study of digital feminist activism, finds Sofia Ropek Hewson, but also an unabashedly hopeful book

Modern methods of polymers characterisation
The bachelor thesis consists of an overview of modern methods of polymers testing. The first part deals with historical development, various types and synthesis of polymers. Further work is focused on the structure of polymers, a description of modern sample preparation methods and methods of study the polymers structure. Next, the mechanical properties of polymers and methods of testing the mechanical properties are discussed. Finally, the work is focused on material resistance testing of polymer pipes used in current practice.

Pharmacopornographic Subjectivity in the Work of Paul B. Preciado
This thesis examines ‘pharmacopornographic’ subjectivity in the work of contemporary Spanish philosopher, Paul B. Preciado, and represents the first extended study of his work. In Preciado’s writing, ‘pharmacopornographic’ describes the entwined influence and dominance of the pharmaceutical and pornographic industries, and the thesis analyses how they produce ‘pharmacopornographic’ subjects. This thesis explores Preciado’s writing on gender, sexuality, pornography, drugs and power between 2002 and 2014 and articulates an emergent trans-feminism.
This research analyses how pharmacological and pornographic industries affect the design and production of genders and subjectivities. The thesis further refines Preciado’s assertion that contemporary, ‘pharmacopornographic’ regimes of power produce subjects rather than objects, or people, rather than things. Ultimately, this research is concerned with understanding the production of pharmacologically-determined subjectivity. The thesis articulates various subject positions, as a means of theorising pharmacopornographic subjectivity: ‘The Voyeur’, ‘The Sex Worker’, ‘The Biodrag King’ and ‘The Junkie’. These subject-position chapters are prefaced with a chapter exploring theoretical frameworks used to analyse Preciado’s work, and the thesis concludes with a chapter on accelerationism and the microprosthetic scale of Testo Junkie.Arts and Humanities Research Counci
