    In the wake of the ironworks - entrepreneurship and the spatial connections to empowerment and emancipation

    In this article, we explore connections between entrepreneurship, gender, empowerment and emancipation. Through the lens of entrepreneurship, we investigate the spatial aspects of these interlinked processes and illustrate emancipation through oppressive gender structures. This spatial lens allows us to see how emancipation changes in practice over time, with empowerment being one of these practices. Through ethnographic longitudinal fieldwork that studies an ironworks turned into a tourist garden, we highlight the collective reproduction of established oppressive structures. Our findings prioritise a spatial understanding of how entrepreneurship connects to empowerment and emancipation

    Learning Gaussian graphical models with fractional marginal pseudo-likelihood

    We propose a Bayesian approximate inference method for learning the dependence structure of a Gaussian graphical model. Using pseudo-likelihood, we derive an analytical expression to approximate the marginal likelihood for an arbitrary graph structure without invoking any assumptions about decomposability. The majority of the existing methods for learning Gaussian graphical models are either restricted to decomposable graphs or require specification of a tuning parameter that may have a substantial impact on learned structures. By combining a simple sparsity inducing prior for the graph structures with a default reference prior for the model parameters, we obtain a fast and easily applicable scoring function that works well for even high-dimensional data. We demonstrate the favourable performance of our approach by large-scale comparisons against the leading methods for learning non-decomposable Gaussian graphical models. A theoretical justification for our method is provided by showing that it yields a consistent estimator of the graph structure. (C) 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.Peer reviewe

    Stability Analysis of Microgrid Islanding Transients based on Interconnected Dissipative Subsystems

    To ensure successful islanding of microgrids after a fault has occurred, the transient stability should be analyzed under a set of expected operating conditions during the design and operation of microgrids. Transient stability analysis is conventionally performed with time-domain analysis which is computationally expensive and does not quantify the stability margin. Energy-based methodologies can determine the stability margin, however existing methodologies require significant simplifications to be applied to the microgrid model. The energy-based stability analysis methodology proposed in this paper enables the analysis of high-dimension nonlinear microgrid systems and quantification of the stability margin within reasonable time. The performance of the methodology is validated by analyzing a case study microgrid and comparing the results to time-domain analysis and to a state-of-the-art methodology proposed in the literature. The results indicate that the proposed methodology has a significantly lower computational burden and similar accuracy compared to existing energy-based methodologies. The methodology is able to improve the probability of stable islanding of the case study microgrid from 74% up to 94% when only optimizing the design, and up to 100% when optimizing design and control actions

    Pretreatment tumor sampling and prognostic factors in patients with soft-tissue sarcoma of the head and neck

    Correction: DOI10.1007/s00405-021-07205-6 Early AccessDEC 2021Background Insufficient preoperative work-up and consequent intralesional or marginal resection of soft-tissue sarcomas of the head and neck (STSHNs) is common. Methods This retrospective cohort study comprised 63 patients with STSHN treated at the Helsinki University Hospital between 2005 and 2017. We assessed the effect of pretreatment tumor sampling on surgical margin status and need for supplemental surgery, as well as prognostic factors and survival. Results The lack of representative pretreatment biopsy specimen was associated with unfavorable margin status. Primary surgery at a non-academic center was associated with need for supplemental surgery. The 3-year overall survival (OS) was 68%, disease-specific survival (DSS) 71%, and recurrence-free survival (RFS) 61%. Higher tumor grade and primary tumor size over 5 cm were associated with reduced DSS. Conclusions Diagnosis and management of STSHNs should be centralized to experienced academic centers. Decision-making between needle biopsy, open biopsy, or upfront radical surgery depends on tumor location and size.Peer reviewe

    Chronic Stressors and Adolescents' Externalizing Problems:Genetic Moderation by Dopamine Receptor D4. The TRAILS Study

    The existing literature does not provide consistent evidence that carriers of the Dopamine D4 Receptor 7-repeat allele are more sensitive to adverse environmental influences, resulting in enhanced externalizing problems, compared to noncarriers. One explanation is that the adverse influences examined in prior studies were not severe, chronic, or distressing enough to reveal individual differences in sensitivity reflected by DRD4-7R. This study examined whether the 7-repeat allele moderated the association between chronic stressors capturing multiple stressful aspects of individuals' lives and externalizing problems in adolescence. We expected that chronic stressor levels would be associated with externalizing levels only in 7-repeat carriers. Using Linear Mixed Models, we analyzed data from 1621 Dutch adolescents (52.2% boys), obtained in three measurement waves (mean age approximately 11, 13.5, and 16 years) from the TRacking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey (TRAILS) population-based birth cohort and the parallel clinic-referred cohort. Across informants, we found that higher levels of chronic stressors were related to higher externalizing levels in 7-repeat carriers but not in noncarriers, as hypothesized. Although previous studies on the 7-repeat allele as a moderator of environmental influences on adolescents' externalizing problems have not convincingly demonstrated individual differences in sensitivity to adverse environmental influences, our findings suggest that adolescent carriers of the Dopamine D4 Receptor 7-repeat allele are more sensitive to chronic, multi-context stressors than noncarriers

    Lower risk of atopic disorders in whole cell pertussis-vaccinated children

    This study addressed whether whole cell pertussis-vaccinated children have a different risk of atopic disorders compared with children who did not receive this vaccination. Data on vaccination status, atopic disorders and child and family characteristics of the children of 700 families were collected in this retrospective study. A minority of these 700 families refused vaccinations for religious reasons. The relation between pertussis-vaccination status and atopic disorders was analysed by means of adjusted logistic regression for repeated measurements in order to account for the correlation between sibship members. The 700 families included 1,961 children. Data on vaccination status and atopic disorders were available for 1,724 children. Vaccinated children had a reduced risk of atopic disorders. Whole cell pertussis vaccination is associated with a lower risk of atopic disorders, though other vaccine components (diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis) or other vaccinations may also be involved

    Phase-related patterns of tidal sand waves and benthic organisms: field observations and idealised modelling

    Observations from the field show that the spatial distribution of benthic organisms is strongly correlated to the morphological structure of tidal sand waves. In particular the troughs of sand waves are typified by a large benthic community, in contrast to the crest. In this paper, we present an idealised process-based model to study these patterns of biota and sand waves. Our model results agree with the observations that these phase-related patterns can arise on the seabed. Moreover, we show that local topography disturbances may lead to spatial patterns of both sand waves and biomass
