    Heterogeneous Value Evaluation for Large Language Models

    The emergent capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) have made it crucial to align their values with those of humans. Current methodologies typically attempt alignment with a homogeneous human value and requires human verification, yet lack consensus on the desired aspect and depth of alignment and resulting human biases. In this paper, we propose A2EHV, an Automated Alignment Evaluation with a Heterogeneous Value system that (1) is automated to minimize individual human biases, and (2) allows assessments against various target values to foster heterogeneous agents. Our approach pivots on the concept of value rationality, which represents the ability for agents to execute behaviors that satisfy a target value the most. The quantification of value rationality is facilitated by the Social Value Orientation framework from social psychology, which partitions the value space into four categories to assess social preferences from agents' behaviors. We evaluate the value rationality of eight mainstream LLMs and observe that large models are more inclined to align neutral values compared to those with strong personal values. By examining the behavior of these LLMs, we contribute to a deeper understanding of value alignment within a heterogeneous value system.Comment: Our full prompts are released in the repo: https://github.com/zowiezhang/A2E

    Dynamics and Control of a Flexible Solar Sail

    Solar sail can merely make use of solar radiation pressure (SRP) force as the thrust for space missions. The attitude dynamics is obtained for the highly flexible solar sail with control vanes, sliding masses, and a gimbaled control boom. The vibration equations are derived considering the geometric nonlinearity of the sail structure subjected to the forces generated by the control vanes, solar radiation pressure (SRP), and sliding masses. Then the dynamic models for attitude/vibration controller design and dynamic simulation are obtained, respectively. The linear quadratic regulator (LQR) based and optimal proportional-integral (PI) based controllers are designed for the coupled attitude/vibration models with constant disturbance torques caused by the center-of-mass (cm)/center-of-pressure (cp) offset, respectively. It can be concluded from the theoretical analysis and simulation results that the optimal PI based controller performs better than the LQR based controller from the view of eliminating the steady-state errors. The responses with and without the geometrical nonlinearity are performed, and the differences are observed and analyzed. And some suggestions are also presented

    COPR: Consistency-Oriented Pre-Ranking for Online Advertising

    Cascading architecture has been widely adopted in large-scale advertising systems to balance efficiency and effectiveness. In this architecture, the pre-ranking model is expected to be a lightweight approximation of the ranking model, which handles more candidates with strict latency requirements. Due to the gap in model capacity, the pre-ranking and ranking models usually generate inconsistent ranked results, thus hurting the overall system effectiveness. The paradigm of score alignment is proposed to regularize their raw scores to be consistent. However, it suffers from inevitable alignment errors and error amplification by bids when applied in online advertising. To this end, we introduce a consistency-oriented pre-ranking framework for online advertising, which employs a chunk-based sampling module and a plug-and-play rank alignment module to explicitly optimize consistency of ECPM-ranked results. A ΔNDCG\Delta NDCG-based weighting mechanism is adopted to better distinguish the importance of inter-chunk samples in optimization. Both online and offline experiments have validated the superiority of our framework. When deployed in Taobao display advertising system, it achieves an improvement of up to +12.3\% CTR and +5.6\% RPM

    The glutathione peroxidase Gpx4 prevents lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis to sustain Treg cell activation and suppression of antitumor immunity

    T regulatory (Treg) cells are crucial to maintain immune tolerance and repress antitumor immunity, but the mechanisms governing their cellular redox homeostasis remain elusive. We report that glutathione peroxidase 4 (Gpx4) prevents Treg cells from lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis in regulating immune homeostasis and antitumor immunity. Treg-specific deletion of Gpx4 impairs immune homeostasis without substantially affecting survival of Treg cells at steady state. Loss of Gpx4 results in excessive accumulation of lipid peroxides and ferroptosis of Treg cells upon T cell receptor (TCR)/CD28 co-stimulation. Neutralization of lipid peroxides and blockade of iron availability rescue ferroptosis of Gpx4-deficient Treg cells. Moreover, Gpx4-deficient Treg cells elevate generation of mitochondrial superoxide and production of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) that facilitates T helper 17 (TH17) responses. Furthermore, Treg-specific ablation of Gpx4 represses tumor growth and concomitantly potentiates antitumor immunity. Our studies establish a crucial role for Gpx4 in protecting activated Treg cells from lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis and offer a potential therapeutic strategy to improve cancer treatment

    Cascade NH3 Oxidation and N2O Decomposition via Bifunctional Co and Cu Catalysts

    The selective catalytic oxidation of NH3 (NH3-SCO) to N2 is an important reaction for the treatment of diesel engine exhaust. Co3O4 has the highest activity among non-noble metals but suffers from N2O release. Such N2O emissions have recently been regulated due to having a 300× higher greenhouse gas effect than CO2. Here, we design CuO-supported Co3O4 as a cascade catalyst for the selective oxidation of NH3 to N2. The NH3-SCO reaction on CuO-Co3O4 follows a de-N2O pathway. Co3O4 activates gaseous oxygen to form N2O. The high redox property of the CuO-Co3O4 interface promotes the breaking of the N-O bond in N2O to form N2. The addition of CuO-Co3O4 to the Pt-Al2O3 catalyst reduces the full NH3 conversion temperature by 50 K and improves the N2 selectivity by 20%. These findings provide a promising strategy for reducing N2O emissions and will contribute to the rational design and development of non-noble metal catalysts

    Clinical Features and Management of Suboptimal Ovarian Response During in vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer: Analysis Based on a Retrospective Cohort Study

    BackgroundBased on dynamic changes of indicators during controlled ovarian hyperstimulation and of clinical outcomes of suboptimal ovarian response with different protocols, this study aimed to summarize the clinical characteristics of SOR and provide clinical recommendations.MethodsData of 125 patients with SOR and 125 controls who had undergone appropriate protocols for in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer were collected from a single medical center from January 2017 to January 2019. Basic clinical indexes, including age, BMI, antral-follicle count, infertility time, basic follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, LH/FSH ratio, estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, androstenedione, prolactin, anti-Mullerian hormone, and thyroid stimulating hormone levels, were analyzed using T-test. Dynamic indexes during COH, including amount and days of gonadotropin, sex hormone levels, and number of large/medium/small follicles at specified time periods, were analyzed using T-test and joint diagnosis analysis with ROC curves. Indexes of laboratory and clinical indicators were analyzed using the chi-square test.ResultsFor the SOR group, BMI, duration time, and dosage of gonadotropin used for SOR were significantly higher. In the ultra-long/long group, ROC curve analysis showed that the LH/FSH ratio and BMI yielded cutoff values of 0.61 and 21.35 kg/m2, respectively. A combined diagnosis of the two indexes showed higher sensitivity (90%) and specificity (59%). In the GnRH-ant group, ROC curve analysis showed an LH level, an LH/FSH ratio on COH day 2, and BMI yielded cutoff values of 2.47 IU/L, 0.57, and 23.95 kg/m2, respectively. Combining the two indexes with BMI, both showed increased sensitivity (77%) and specificity (72% and 74%). The estradiol level and progesterone level during the late follicular stage in SOR patients were significantly lower than those in control patients for both protocol groups. At each monitoring time, delayed follicular development was observed. The live-birth rate in fresh cycles of the ultra-long/long group and the live-birth rate in cumulative cycles of the antagonist group in the SOR group were lower than those in the control group.ConclusionSOR had adverse effects on clinical outcome. We provide some threshold values of basic LH/FSH ratio, BMI, COH day 2 LH, counts of follicles, and levels of estradiol/progesterone to be taken as reference to assist the early recognition of SOR

    Real-time Monitoring for the Next Core-Collapse Supernova in JUNO

    Core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is one of the most energetic astrophysical events in the Universe. The early and prompt detection of neutrinos before (pre-SN) and during the SN burst is a unique opportunity to realize the multi-messenger observation of the CCSN events. In this work, we describe the monitoring concept and present the sensitivity of the system to the pre-SN and SN neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), which is a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector under construction in South China. The real-time monitoring system is designed with both the prompt monitors on the electronic board and online monitors at the data acquisition stage, in order to ensure both the alert speed and alert coverage of progenitor stars. By assuming a false alert rate of 1 per year, this monitoring system can be sensitive to the pre-SN neutrinos up to the distance of about 1.6 (0.9) kpc and SN neutrinos up to about 370 (360) kpc for a progenitor mass of 30MM_{\odot} for the case of normal (inverted) mass ordering. The pointing ability of the CCSN is evaluated by using the accumulated event anisotropy of the inverse beta decay interactions from pre-SN or SN neutrinos, which, along with the early alert, can play important roles for the followup multi-messenger observations of the next Galactic or nearby extragalactic CCSN.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figure

    Impact of opioid-free analgesia on pain severity and patient satisfaction after discharge from surgery: multispecialty, prospective cohort study in 25 countries

    Background: Balancing opioid stewardship and the need for adequate analgesia following discharge after surgery is challenging. This study aimed to compare the outcomes for patients discharged with opioid versus opioid-free analgesia after common surgical procedures.Methods: This international, multicentre, prospective cohort study collected data from patients undergoing common acute and elective general surgical, urological, gynaecological, and orthopaedic procedures. The primary outcomes were patient-reported time in severe pain measured on a numerical analogue scale from 0 to 100% and patient-reported satisfaction with pain relief during the first week following discharge. Data were collected by in-hospital chart review and patient telephone interview 1 week after discharge.Results: The study recruited 4273 patients from 144 centres in 25 countries; 1311 patients (30.7%) were prescribed opioid analgesia at discharge. Patients reported being in severe pain for 10 (i.q.r. 1-30)% of the first week after discharge and rated satisfaction with analgesia as 90 (i.q.r. 80-100) of 100. After adjustment for confounders, opioid analgesia on discharge was independently associated with increased pain severity (risk ratio 1.52, 95% c.i. 1.31 to 1.76; P < 0.001) and re-presentation to healthcare providers owing to side-effects of medication (OR 2.38, 95% c.i. 1.36 to 4.17; P = 0.004), but not with satisfaction with analgesia (beta coefficient 0.92, 95% c.i. -1.52 to 3.36; P = 0.468) compared with opioid-free analgesia. Although opioid prescribing varied greatly between high-income and low- and middle-income countries, patient-reported outcomes did not.Conclusion: Opioid analgesia prescription on surgical discharge is associated with a higher risk of re-presentation owing to side-effects of medication and increased patient-reported pain, but not with changes in patient-reported satisfaction. Opioid-free discharge analgesia should be adopted routinely

    The Somatic Genomic Landscape of Glioblastoma

    We describe the landscape of somatic genomic alterations based on multi-dimensional and comprehensive characterization of more than 500 glioblastoma tumors (GBMs). We identify several novel mutated genes as well as complex rearrangements of signature receptors including EGFR and PDGFRA. TERT promoter mutations are shown to correlate with elevated mRNA expression, supporting a role in telomerase reactivation. Correlative analyses confirm that the survival advantage of the proneural subtype is conferred by the G-CIMP phenotype, and MGMT DNA methylation may be a predictive biomarker for treatment response only in classical subtype GBM. Integrative analysis of genomic and proteomic profiles challenges the notion of therapeutic inhibition of a pathway as an alternative to inhibition of the target itself. These data will facilitate the discovery of therapeutic and diagnostic target candidates, the validation of research and clinical observations and the generation of unanticipated hypotheses that can advance our molecular understanding of this lethal cancer
