Determination of Retinol, -Tocopherol, Lycopene, and -Carotene in Human Plasma Using HPLC with UV-Vis Detection: Application to a Clinical Study

A method is described here for the simultaneous determination of retinol, -tocopherol, lycopene, and -carotene in human plasma. e effectiveness of various protein precipitants and extraction solvents was tested. Aer adequate sample preparation, the samples were injected directly into the HPLC system. e separation was realized on an analytical reversed-phase column with a UV-Vis detection. e analytical performance of this method was satisfactory. e intraassay and interassay coefficients of variation were below 10%. e recoveries were as follows: 97.0% (CV 2.4%) for retinol, 94.6% (CV 1.7%) for -tocopherol, 91.9% (CV 3.6%) for lycopene, and 93.9% (CV 4.2%) for -carotene. e levels of selected fat-soluble vitamins in plasma of patients with cardiovascular disease were measured and discussed

General linguistics and Indo-European reconstruction

There is good reason to be ambivalent about the usefulness of general considerations in linguistic reconstruction. As a heuristic device, a theoretical framework can certainly be helpful, but the negative potential of aprioristic considerations must not be underestimated. E.g., there is a whole range of phenomena which receive a natural explanation when we assume that glottalization is ancient in Germanic. The methodological question is: why have scholars been reluctant to identify the vestjysk stød with the English glottalization as a historical reality which may have been inherited from the proto-language? The role of general linguistics is to provide an idea of what can be expected in linguistic development, not by theoretical reasoning but by inspection of what actually happens

Annexation or Conquest? The Economics of Empire Building

This paper develops an economic theory of empire building. This theory addresses the choice among three strategies that empire builders historically have used. We call these strategies Uncoerced Annexation, Coerced Annexation, and Attempted Conquest. The theory shows how the choice among these strategies depends on such factors as the economic gains from imperial expansion, the relative effectiveness of imperial armies, the costs of projecting imperial military power, and liquidity constraints on financing imperial armies. This theory also addresses the scope of imperial ambitions. The paper uses examples from the history of the Roman, Mongol, Ottoman, and Nazi German empires to illustrate the applicability of the theory.

КОГНІТИВНЕ ПОЯСНЕННЯ ВИЯВІВ АНГЛОМОВНОГО ЗАПЕРЕЧЕННЯ

У статті експліцитне й імпліцитне англомовне заперечення досліджується із залученням образ-схем, які є елементарними ментальними механізмами концептуалізації. Установлено, що експліцитні й імпліцитні заперечення представляють початковий, проміжний та кінцевий етапи зміни відношень між референтами залежно від деактивації або активації компонентів образ-схем. Визначальною ознакою розрізнення двох видів заперечень є припинення відношень, що репрезентується експліцитними одиницями синтаксичного й морфемного рівня й виявляється у словникових дефініціях імпліцитних лексичних заперечень

У зв'язку з високою вартістю енергоресурсів і дефіцитом водних ресурсів сучасні тепломассообінні апарати повинні бути енергоємними, високоефективними і інтенсивними, бути універсальними, простими конструктивно і забезпечувати зручність монтажу і експлуатації. Запропоновано нову багатоступеневу конструкцію вихрового апарату.The paper deals with the modern requirements of a new technology. Indicate the direction of the development of science and technology on the problem of heat and mass transfer. Due to the sharp rise in price of energy in the world and a deficit of water resources modern heat and mass transfer devices shall meet the requirements such as: energy-intensive, highly efficient and intensive, to be universal, simple to constructively and to provide convenience of installation and operation. The possibility of combining and intensifying physical and chemical processes in gas-liquid systems due to the creation of a developed turbulent phase movement in one apparatus allows us to achieve high efficiency of mass transfer and gas purification. Despite the fact that the construction of hollow vortex spray devices have been developed for a long time, they did not find until recently widespread use for a number of reasons, among which should be noted as deficient researched description of their work and the lack of scientifically grounded methods of calculation and disinterest of enterprises in qualitative clearing of industrial gas emissions
