    A Complexity-Brightness Correlation in Gamma Ray Bursts

    We observe strong correlations between the temporal properties of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) and their apparent peak brightness. The strongest effect (with a significance level of 10^{-6}) is the difference between the brightness distributions of simple bursts (dominated by a single smooth pulse) and complex bursts (consisting of overlapping pulses). The latter has a break at a peak flux of 1.5 ph/cm^2/s, while the distribution of simple bursts is smooth down to the BATSE threshold. We also observe brightness dependent variations in the shape of the average peak aligned time profile (ATP) of GRBs. The decaying slope of the ATP shows time dilation when comparing bright and dim bursts while the rising slope hardly changes. Both slopes of the ATP are deformed for weak bursts as compared to strong bursts. The interpretation of these effects is simple: a complex burst where a number of independent pulses overlap in time appears intrinsically stronger than a simple burst. Then the BATSE sample of complex bursts covers larger redshifts where some cosmological factor causes the break in the peak brightness distribution.     Statistical mechanics of Floquet systems with regular and chaotic states

    We investigate the asymptotic state of time-periodic quantum systems with regular and chaotic Floquet states weakly coupled to a heat bath. The asymptotic occupation probabilities of these two types of states follow fundamentally different distributions. Among regular states the probability decreases from the state in the center of a regular island to the outermost state by orders of magnitude, while chaotic states have almost equal probabilities. We derive an analytical expression for the occupations of regular states of kicked systems, which depends on the winding numbers of the regular tori and the parameters temperature and driving frequency. For a constant winding number within a regular island it simplifies to Boltzmann-like weights \exp(-\betaeff \Ereg_m), similar to time-independent systems. For this we introduce the regular energies \Ereg_m of the quantizing tori and an effective winding-number-dependent temperature 1/\betaeff, different from the actual bath temperature. Furthermore, the occupations of other typical Floquet states in a mixed phase space are studied, i.e. regular states on nonlinear resonances, beach states, and hierarchical states, giving rise to distinct features in the occupation distribution. Avoided crossings involving a regular state lead to drastic consequences for the entire set of occupations.     Transverse Velocity Dependence of the Proton-Antiproton Ratio as a Signature of the QCD Critical Endpoint

    The presence of a critical point in the QCD phase diagram can deform the trajectories describing the evolution of the expanding fireball in the μB−T\mu_B-T phase diagram. If the average emission time of hadrons is a function of transverse velocity, as microscopic simulations of the hadronic freeze-out dynamics suggest, the deformation of the hydrodynamic trajectories will change the transverse velocity (βT\beta_{\rm T}) dependence of the proton-antiproton ratio when the fireball passes in the vicinity of the critical point. An unusual βT\beta_{\rm T}-dependence of the pˉ/p\bar{p}/p ratio in a narrow beam energy window would thus signal the presence of the critical point.Comment: Final version accepted for publicatio

    Basement and Regional Structure Along Strike of the Queen Charlotte Fault in the Context of Modern and Historical Earthquake Ruptures

    The Queen Charlotte fault (QCF) is a dextral transform system located offshore of southeastern Alaska and western Canada, accommodating similar to 4.4 cm/yr of relative motion between the Pacific and North American plates. Oblique convergence along the fault increases southward, and how this convergence is accommodated is still debated. Using seismic reflection data, we interpret offshore basement structure, faulting, and stratigraphy to provide a geological context for two recent earthquakes, an M-w 7.5 strike-slip event near Craig, Alaska, and an M-w 7.8 thrust event near Haida Gwaii, Canada. We map downwarped Pacific oceanic crust near 54 degrees N, between the two rupture zones. Observed downwarping decreases north and south of 54 degrees N, parallel to the strike of the QCF. Bending of the Pacific plate here may have initiated with increased convergence rates due to a plate motion change at similar to 6 Ma. Tectonic reconstruction implies convergence-driven Pacific plate flexure, beginning at 6 Ma south of a 10 degrees bend the QCF (which is currently at 53.2 degrees N) and lasting until the plate translated past the bend by similar to 2 Ma. Normal-faulted approximately late Miocene sediment above the deep flexural depression at 54 degrees N, topped by relatively undeformed Pleistocene and younger sediment, supports this model. Aftershocks of the Haida Gwaii event indicate a normal-faulting stress regime, suggesting present-day plate flexure and underthrusting, which is also consistent with reconstruction of past conditions. We thus favor a Pacific plate underthrusting model to initiate flexure and accommodation space for sediment loading.     Pembuatan material berpori untuk pelet apung (floating feed) telah berhasil dilakukan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membuat produk pakan ikan yang mampu mengapung di air dengan memodifikasi struktur pori dari materialnya. Parameter uji yang dibandingkan meliputi densitas, absorpsi air, porositas, dan waktu apung (floating time). Bahan baku yang digunakan adalah bahan baku polimer organik alam yang didapatkan dari bahan lokal yang banyak dikonsumsi masyarakat umum. Formulasi komposisi sampel dilakukan dengan metoda square. Pemasakan dilakukan dalam steam chamber mixer pada temperatur berkisar dari 70–95oC selama 20-30 menit, dilanjutkan dengan pembuatan pelet menggunakan extruder dengan dies berdiameter 4 mm untuk kompaksi. Hasil pengujian menunjukkan nilai waktu apung rata-rata dari semua variasi sampel sebesar 66 menit dan nilai waktu apung tertinggi mencapai 246 menit (4 jam) dengan rapat massa rata-rata 0,79 gr/cm3 dan tingkat porositas 66,7%. Nilai absorpsi air yang merupakan manifestasi karakteristik fisik swelling partikel mencapai 76,4%. Unsur pati (starch) pada kedua polimer organik yang digunakan merupakan unsur terpenting dalam keberhasilan proses gelatinisasi untuk mendapatkan kualitas produk pakan disamping temperatur uap, kandungan air dan waktu pemasakan. Rasio antara rantai polimer amilose dan amilopektin yang terdapat dalam granul pati akan menentukan modifikasi struktur pori yang dihasilkan

    Engineering Dehydrated Amino Acid Residues in the Antimicrobial Peptide Nisin

    The small antimicrobial peptide nisin, produced by Lactococcus lactis, contains the uncommon amino acid residues dehydroalanine and dehydrobutyrine and five thio ether bridges. Since these structures are posttranslationally formed from Ser, Thr, and Cys residues, it is feasible to study their role in nisin function and biosynthesis by protein engineering. Here we report the development of an expression system for mutated nisin Z (nisZ) genes, using nisin A producing L. lactis as a host. Replacement by site-directed mutagenesis of the Ser-5 codon in nisZ by a Thr codon, led to a mutant with a dehydrobutyrine instead of a dehydroalanine residue at position 5, as shown by NMR. Its antimicrobial activity was 2-10-fold lower relative to wild-type nisin Z, depending on the indicator strain used. In another mutagenesis study a double mutation was introduced in the nisZ gene by replacing the codons for Met-17 and Gly-18 by codons for Gln and Thr, respectively, as in the third lanthionine ring of the related antimicrobial peptide subtilin from Bacillus subtilis. This resulted in the simultaneous production of two mutant species, one containing a Thr residue and the other containing a dehydrobutyrine residue at position 18, both having different bacteriocidal properties.

    Thermodynamic Scaling of the Viscosity of Van Der Waals, H-Bonded, and Ionic Liquids

    Viscosities and their temperature, T, and volume, V, dependences are reported for 7 molecular liquids and polymers. In combination with literature viscosity data for 5 other liquids, we show that the superpositioning of relaxation times for various glass-forming materials when expressed as a function of TV^g, where the exponent g is a material constant, can be extended to the viscosity. The latter is usually measured to higher temperatures than the corresponding relaxation times, demonstrating the validity of the thermodynamic scaling throughout the supercooled and higher T regimes. The value of g for a given liquid principally reflects the magnitude of the intermolecular forces (e.g., steepness of the repulsive potential); thus, we find decreasing g in going from van der Waals fluids to ionic liquids. For strongly H-bonded materials, such as low molecular weight polypropylene glycol and water, the superpositioning fails, due to the non-trivial change of chemical structure (degree of H-bonding) with thermodynamic conditions.Comment: 16 pages 7 figure

    GPAQ-R: development and psychometric properties of a version of the general practice assessment questionnaire for use for revalidation by general practitioners in the UK.

    BACKGROUND: The General Practice Assessment Questionnaire (GPAQ) has been widely used to assess patient experience in general practice in the UK since 2004. In 2013, new regulations were introduced by the General Medical Council (GMC) requiring UK doctors to undertake periodic revalidation, which includes assessment of patient experience for individual doctors. We describe the development of a new version of GPAQ - GPAQ-R which addresses the GMC's requirements for revalidation as well as additional NHS requirements for surveys that GPs may need to carry out in their own practices. METHODS: Questionnaires were given out by doctors or practice staff after routine consultations in line with the guidance given by the General Medical Council for surveys to be used for revalidation. Data analysis and practice reports were provided independently. RESULTS: Data were analysed for questionnaires from 7258 patients relating to 164 GPs in 29 general practices. Levels of missing data were generally low (typically 4.5-6%). The number of returned questionnaires required to achieve reliability of 0.7 were around 35 for individual doctor communication items and 29 for a composite score based on doctor communication items. This suggests that the responses to GPAQ-R had similar reliability to the GMC's own questionnaire and we recommend 30 completed GPAQ-R questionnaires are sufficient for revalidation purposes. However, where an initial screen raises concern, the survey might be repeated with 50 completed questionnaires in order to increase reliability. CONCLUSIONS: GPAQ-R is a development of a well-established patient experience questionnaire used in general practice in the UK since 2004. This new version can be recommended for use in order to meet the UK General Medical Council's requirements for surveys to be used in revalidation of doctors. It also meets the needs of GPs to ask about patient experience relating to aspects of practice care that are not specific to individual general practitioners (e.g. receptionists, telephone access) which meet other survey requirements of the National Health Service in England. Use of GPAQ-R has the potential to reduce the number of surveys that GPs need to carry out in their practices to meet the various regulatory requirements which they face
