INTRODUCTION: Noise in biomechanical displacement data are often reduced by digital filter routines. In literature the cross-validated quintic spline from Woltring (1986) and the Butterworth low pass filter are commonly used. Challis (1999) recently suggested a method for determining the optimal cut-off frequency of Butterworth low pass filters. This method is based on a combination of residual analysis and autocorrelation. The optimization of the filter order, however, is not discussed by Challis. ENERGETICS OF THE LOWER EXTREMITY JOINTS DURING GRADED WALKING ON A SLOPE COMPARED WITH ASCENDING AND DESCENDING STAIRS

The purpose of this study was to compare the energetics of the lower extremity joints during uphill and downhill walking on slopes and stairs. 10 subjects were filmed and their ground reaction forces were measured during uphill and downhill walking on a ramp and on a staircase (24°) at the same speed. Inverse dynamics were used to calculate net joint forces and moments as well as joint power and energy at the ankle, knee and hip joint. Both, for uphill and downhill walking, the energy is more balanced in the staircase compared with the ramp conditions. Ascending stairs shifts the energy from the ankle joint to the hip joint, while in descending stairs a shift from the knee joint to the ankle joint can be observed

Age of Acquisition und agrammatische Störungen der Morphologie

Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Flexionsmorphologie des deutschen Plural- und Partizipsystems. Genauer gesagt behandelt sie deren Erwerb und Verarbeitung, sowie Störung bei aphasischen Patienten mit agrammatischer Symptomatik. Diese drei Hauptthemen wurden je für sich alleine, als auch der Einfluss des Erwerbsreihenfolge auf das Störungsbild bei Aphasikern, untersucht. Zusammenhänge zwischen Erwerbszeitpunkt und Verlust nennt man in der Linguistik und Psychologie Age of Acquisition – Effekte. Hierzu stellte ich einige Studien und Erklärungsansätze vor. Dazu musste jedoch vorher geklärt werden, was man unter Erwerb versteht, oder genauer gesagt, ab wann man etwas als erworben ansehen kann. Auch hierzu gibt es viele Theorien, von denen ich einige präsentierte und schließlich meine eigene Definition postulierte. Weiters ging ich, wie bereits erwähnt, auf die Struktur des deutschen Partizip- bzw. Pluralsystems ein, wobei ich mein Hauptaugenmerk auf den wesentlich komplexeren Plural legte. An dieser Stelle wurden verschiedne Faktoren der jeweiligen Marker behandelt, die den Erwerb beeinflussen (könnten). Weiters stellte ich zum Punkt Verarbeitungsmodelle, Single- und Dual Mechanism Modelle vor, sowie auch alternative Ansätze dazu. Auch einige Langzeituntersuchungen und Elizitationsstudien zu Erwerb bzw. Emergenz präsentierte und verglich ich. Um dies theoretischen Ansätze und Studienergebnisse zu überprüfen führte ich selbst je einen Test zu Plural- und Partizipfähigkeiten, bei Kindern und Agrammatikern durch. Die Ergebnisse stimmten mit einigen Angaben aus der Literatur überein, anderen widersprachen sie komplett, wie z.B. der Annahme von –s als Defaultplural. Die aus meinen Daten abstrahierte Erwerbsreihenfolge konnte die Leistung der Aphasiker relativ gut vorhersagen, was die Annahme eines Age of Acquisition – Effekts plausibel erscheinen lässt

MEASURING DEVICE FOR ON-LINE CALCULATING AND SCREENING OF KNEE JOINT FORCES

INTRODUCTION: For calculating knee joint forces quasi-static and dynamic 2D knee models have been developed (Moeinzadeh et al., 1983, Nisell, 1985, Yamaguchi/ Zajac, 1989). From the preventive point of view the on-line calculation and screening of knee joint forces could give us important simultaneous feedback on the loads on the different structures during training and performance exercises in several sports. Based on these considerations an existing 2D knee model should be adapted for on-line calculating and screening of knee joint forces. METHODS: The purpose is to determine the kinematics of the knee joint as function of the knee angle. Therefore data from Yamaguchi/Zajac (1989), Nisell (1985) and ourselves were combined to the 2D model called 'Plakmos'. All relevant parameters needed for determining the kinematics of the knee were calculated for knee angles between 0° and 96° in steps of 2°. In a further procedure these data were calculated as polynomial functions of the knee angle up to order 10 using non-linear regression technique. These functions in combination with the direction, the magnitude and the point of application of the ground reaction force (GRF) are sufficient to obtain the main compression, shear and tendon forces. A special measuring device consisting of a force platform (for determining the direction, magnitude and application point of the GRF) and two goniometers (to obtain the ankle and knee angles) yields the input data for calculating the knee joint forces. The data collection and the calculation procedure is carried out using the measuring software Dasylab. RESULTS: The kinematics of Plakmos coincides with the knee models reported very closely, so the validity of the model is given with sufficient accuracy to investigate at least relative comparisons in different situations. The utility and simplicity of the measuring device including Plakmos has been demonstrated in comparative studies of knee bending with and without additional weights and different knee bending techniques. Der Vietnamkrieg im Bild

Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt die intermediale Beziehung zwischen dem Film als darstellendes und der Fotografie als dargestelltes Medium, wobei Eigenschaften der Fotografie in den Film transponiert werden. Am konkreten Beispiel der Kriegsfotografie im englischsprachigen Vietnamkriegsfilmgenre werden die dabei in den Film übersetzten medialen Konventionen bestimmt und in einen historisch-philosophischen Kontext gesetzt. Als Grundlage für diese Analyse dient zunächst ein Abriss der eng verknüpften gemeinsamen Entstehungsgeschichten der modernen Kriegsführung ab Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts und der Fotografie, die sich vielfach überschneiden beziehungsweise voneinander profitieren. Ebenso sind in diesem Zusammenhang die oftmals proklamierte metaphorische Verbindung zwischen Fotoapparat und Waffe sowie die Gleichsetzung eines fotografischen Akts mit Aggression zu erwähnen. Anschließend werden das Genre des Vietnamkriegsfilms sowie dessen Subgenres definiert, bevor Eigenschaften der in dieser Filmgattung dargestellten Fotografinnen- und Fotografenfiguren Erwähnung finden. Ebenso sind der Begriff Intermedialität selbst sowie die tatsächlichen Implikationen dieser Medienbeziehung in Bezug auf die Darstellung der Fotografie im Film ein zentrales Thema der Arbeit. Zuletzt werden diese theoretischen Überlegungen an drei Filmbeispielen in die Praxis umgesetzt. Dazu wurden die (Vietnam-)Kriegsfotografiefilme Apocalypse Now / Apocalypse Now Redux (Francis Ford Coppola 1979 / 2001), The Killing Fields (Schreiendes Land, Roland Joffé 1984) und Full Metal Jacket (Stanley Kubrick 1987) gewählt, da in diesen wesentliche Figuren den Beruf der Kriegsfotografin beziehungsweise des Kriegsfotografen ausüben
