    Subordination in Children’s Writing

    This paper reports an investigation into the use of subordinate clauses in the writing of a class of seven to nine year old children when attempting five different writing tasks. The investigation was undertaken in part-response to an inspection report on the school by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) which recommended that the school should extend the writing skills of pupils in this age-range. The importance of developing subordination in writing is related to previous research and to evidence from reviews of Ofsted inspection evidence. The different patterns of subordination are discussed, between tasks and pupils and in relation to variation in the writing of individual children when tackling the different tasks. The paper ends by suggesting how similar informal investigations can assist schools in promoting writing development. It also outlines how the teaching approaches outlined in the National Literacy Strategy will provide opportunities for this promotion, particularly by exploiting links between reading and writing

    We study cubical sets without degeneracies, which we call {square}-sets. These sets arise naturally in a number of settings and they have a beautiful intrinsic geometry; in particular a {square}-set C has an infinite family of associated {square}-sets Ji(C), for i = 1, 2, ..., which we call James complexes. There are mock bundle projections pi: |Ji(C)| -> |C| (which we call James bundles) defining classes in unstable cohomotopy which generalise the classical James–Hopf invariants of {Omega}(S2). The algebra of these classes mimics the algebra of the cohomotopy of {Omega}(S2) and the reduction to cohomology defines a sequence of natural characteristic classes for a {square}-set. An associated map to BO leads to a generalised cohomology theory with geometric interpretation similar to that for Mahowald orientation

    Le zonage intra-parcellaire est une méthode couramment utilisée pour gérer la variabilité intra-parcellaire. Ce concept consiste à partitionner une parcelle en zones de management selon une ou plusieurs caractéristiques du sol et/ou du couvert végétal de cette parcelle. Cet article propose une méthode de zonage originale, basée sur l'utilisation d'une méthode de segmentation d'image puissante et rapide : l'algorithme de ligne de partage des eaux. Cet algorithme d'analyse d'image a été adapté aux spécificités de l'agriculture de précision. Les performances de notre méthodes ont été testées sur des cartes biophysiques haute résolution de plusieurs champs de blé situés en Bourgogne. / Site-specific management (SSM) is a common way to manage within-field variability. This concept divides fields into site-specific management zones (SSMZ) according to one or several soil or crop characteristics. This paper proposes an original methodology for SSMZ delineation which is able to manage different kinds of crop and/or soil images using a powerful segmentation tool: the watershed algorithm. This image analysis algorithm was adapted to the specific constraints of precision agriculture.     Developing a novel approach to analyse the regimes of temporary streams and their controls on aquatic biota

    Temporary streams are those water courses that undergo the recurrent cessation of flow or the complete drying of their channel. The biological communities in temporary stream reaches are strongly dependent on the temporal changes of the aquatic habitats determined by the hydrological conditions. The use of the aquatic fauna structural and functional characteristics to assess the ecological quality of a temporary stream reach can not therefore be made without taking into account the controls imposed by the hydrological regime. This paper develops some methods for analysing temporary streams' aquatic regimes, based on the definition of six aquatic states that summarize the sets of mesohabitats occurring on a given reach at a particular moment, depending on the hydrological conditions: flood, riffles, connected, pools, dry and arid. We used the water discharge records from gauging stations or simulations using rainfall-runoff models to infer the temporal patterns of occurrence of these states using the developed aquatic states frequency graph. The visual analysis of this graph is complemented by the development of two metrics based on the permanence of flow and the seasonal predictability of zero flow periods. Finally, a classification of the aquatic regimes of temporary streams in terms of their influence over the development of aquatic life is put forward, defining Permanent, Temporary-pools, Temporary-dry and Episodic regime types. All these methods were tested with data from eight temporary streams around the Mediterranean from MIRAGE project and its application was a precondition to assess the ecological quality of these streams using the current methods prescribed in the European Water Framework Directive for macroinvertebrate communities

    A Model for Solid 3^3He: II

    We propose a simple Ginzburg-Landau free energy to describe the magnetic phase transition in solid 3^3He. The free energy is analyzed with due consideration of the hard first order transitions at low magnetic fields. The resulting phase diagram contains all of the important features of the experimentally observed ph ase diagram. The free energy also yields a critical field at which the transition from the disordered state to the high field state changes from a first order to a second order one.Comment: This paper has been accepted for publication in Journal of Low Temperature Physics.
