The role of optimization in the next generation of computer-based design tools

    Get PDF
There is a close relationship between design optimization and the emerging new generation of computer-based tools for engineering design. With some notable exceptions, the development of these new tools has not taken full advantage of recent advances in numerical design optimization theory and practice. Recent work in the field of design process architecture has included an assessment of the impact of next-generation computer-based design tools on the design process. These results are summarized, and insights into the role of optimization in a design process based on these next-generation tools are presented. An example problem has been worked out to illustrate the application of this technique. The example problem - layout of an aircraft main landing gear - is one that is simple enough to be solved by many other techniques. Although the mathematical relationships describing the objective function and constraints for the landing gear layout problem can be written explicitly and are quite straightforward, an approximation technique has been used in the solution of this problem that can just as easily be applied to integrate supportability or producibility assessments using theory of measurement techniques into the design decision-making process

Increasing Health and Safety Through the Utilization of 4D Modeling

Health and safety is one of the most important aspects of the construction industry. Every year there are thousands of work-related injuries in the construction industry. Avoiding these injuries is of the utmost importance on a jobsite. This paper will analyze how building information modeling, specifically the use of 4D building information modeling, can be utilized to increase the overall health and safety of construction jobsite. An exploratory survey was conducted amongst architecture, engineering, and construction industry professionals who hold a wide range of experience. The aim of this survey was to analyze their knowledge and experiences using building information modeling, especially 4D building information modeling, in conjuncture with health and safety. This paper also serves to lend background information on health and safety, building information modeling, and more specifically 4D building information modeling. This paper provides possibilities of future research that can be conducted as a part of the research taken from the survey

Helminth species richness in wild wood mice, Apodemus sylvaticus, is enhanced by the presence of the intestinal nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus

We analysed 3 independently collected datasets of fully censused helminth burdens in wood mice, Apodemus sylvaticus, testing the a priori hypothesis of Behnke et al. (2005) that the presence of the intestinal nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus predisposes wood mice to carrying other species of helminths. In Portugal, mice carrying H. polygyrus showed a higher prevalence of other helminths but the magnitude of the effect was seasonal. In Egham, mice with H. polygyrus showed a higher prevalence of other helminth species, not confounded by other factors. In Malham Tarn, mice carrying H. polygyrus were more likely to be infected with other species, but only among older mice. Allowing for other factors, heavy residual H. polygyrus infections carried more species of other helminths in both the Portugal and Egham data; species richness in Malham was too low to conduct a similar analysis, but as H. polygyrus worm burdens increased, so the prevalence of other helminths also increased. Our results support those of Behnke et al. (2005), providing firm evidence that at the level of species richness a highly predictable element of co-infections in wood mice has now been defined: infection with H. polygyrus has detectable consequences for the susceptibility of wood mice to other intestinal helminth species

    Higgs look-alikes at the LHC

The discovery of a Higgs particle is possible in a variety of search channels at the LHC. However the true identity of any putative Higgs boson will at first remain ambiguous, until one has experimentally excluded other possible assignments of quantum numbers and couplings. We quantify to what degree one can discriminate a Standard Model Higgs boson from "look-alikes" at, or close to, the moment of discovery at the LHC. We focus on the fully-reconstructible "golden" decay mode to a pair of Z bosons and a four-lepton final state, simulating sPlot-weighted samples of signal and background events. Considering both on-shell and off-shell Z's, we show how to utilize the full decay information from the events, including the distributions and correlations of the five relevant angular variables. We demonstrate how the finite phase space acceptance of any LHC detector sculpts the decay distributions, a feature neglected in previous studies. We use likelihood ratios to discriminate a Standard Model Higgs from look-alikes with other spins or nonstandard parity, CP, or form factors. For a benchmark resonance mass of 200 GeV/c^2, we achieve a median expected discrimination significance of 3 sigma with as few as 19 events, and even better discrimination for the off-shell decays of a 145 GeV/c^2 resonance.Comment: 39 pages, 55 figures, typos fixed, figures added, and minor clarification

Chlamydia trachomatis infection and the risk of perinatal mortality in Hungary

Introduction: Chlamydial infections of the genital tract are thought to often lead to preterm birth, which is the most important perinatal problem in Hungary. Aim of study: A multicenter study was carried out to determine the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection, risk factors for the infection and to relate the infection to perinatal mortality, accounting for potential confounding effects. Methods: The nucleic acid hybridization method (PACE2 Gen-Probe) was applied for the examination of Chlamydia trachomatis. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess risk. Results: A total of 6156 pregnant women were examined for the occurrence of Chlamydia trachomatis. The observed overall rate of chlamydial infection was 5.9%. Young age (less than 24 years old) (OR and 95% CI:1.6 (1.3-2.0)), unmarried status (1.5 (1.2-1.9)) and the high unemployment rate (2.1 (1.6-2.7)) were statistically significant predictors of the infection. In logistic regression analysis, chlamydial infection (1.9 (1.1-3.3)). high unemployment rate (1.5 (1.2-2.2)) and low birth weight (1.7 (1.1-2.7) were significant predictors of perinatal mortality. Conclusions: Testing pregnant women for diseases that can be transmitted perinatally is an important part of obstetric cart. Screening for C. trachomatis of unmarried women under 24 years of age is suggested and need increased observation during labor

    Interstitial Electronic Localization

We investigate the ground-state properties of a collection of \textit{N} non-interacting electrons in a macroscopic volume Ω\Omega also containing a crystalline array of \textit{N} spheres of radius rcr_c each taken as largely impenetrable to electrons and with proximity of neighboring excluding regions playing a key physical role. The sole parameter of this quantum system is the ratio rc/rsr_c/r_s, where rsr_s is the Wigner- Seitz radius. Two lattices (FCC and BCC) are selected to illustrate the behavior of the system as a function of rc/rsr_c/r_s. As this ratio increases valence electrons localize in the interstitial regions and the relative band-width ϵF/ϵF0\epsilon_F/\epsilon_F^0 is found to decrease monotonically for both. The system is motivated by the behavior of the alkali metals at significant compression. It accounts for band narrowing, leads to electronic densities with interstitially centered maxima, and can be taken as a model which clearly may be improved upon by perturbation and other methods.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
