Morphological characteristics of maize plants in estimate the silage chemical composition
The aim of this study was to estimate the chemical composition of maize silage based on the morphological characteristics of maize plants and to evaluate the effect of nitrogen fertilization and the inclusion of a microbial inoculant during the ensiling process on the production of maize silage and its morphological, qualitative and fermentative characteristics. The experimental treatments consisted of four levels of nitrogen fertilization with urea (0, 100, 200 and 300 kg ha-1) and the inclusion or exclusion of the microbial inoculants during the ensiling process. A completely randomized design was used in a 4×2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The maize silage chemical composition was estimated by evaluating the plant height (PH) and ear characteristics (NRE = number of rows per ear; NKE = number of kernels per ear; ELS = ear length with straw; EL = ear length without straw) using the following equations: CP = -12.44 + 5.871 × PH + 0.01814 × NRE² (R² = 0.89; P < 0.0001); NDF = 587.93-0.78 × NKE-11.67 × ELS-0.47 × EL + 0.0000007 × NKE³ + 0.006 × EL³ (R² = 0.92; P = 0.003); ADF = 41.48 -0.046 × NRE2 (R2 = 0.42; P = 0.02); TDN = 57.81 - 0.0319 × NRE2 (R2 = 0.42; P = 0.02); EDDM = 56.58 + 0.035 × NRE2 (R2 = 0.42; P = 0.02) and NEL = 1.31 + 0.000757 × NRE2 (R2 = 0.41; P = 0.02). In conclusion, nitrogen fertilization increases the silage energy and protein content; while the inclusion of microbial inoculants during the ensiling process does not alter the chemical and fermentative characteristics of the maize silage

Dynamics of nitrogen concentration on intercropped ryegrass - 10.4025/actascianimsci.v34i1.12661
The dynamics of nitrogen (N) in ryegrass intercropped with different forage species with regard to dry matter (DM) accumulation within an agroecological transition system was evaluated. Annual ryegrass was intercropped with black oats (RY + BO), white clover (RY + WC) and forage peanut (RY + FP). The experimental design was completely randomized, with three replications. The study applied the N dilution model for plant tissue which comparatively uses modifiable factors of the environment at optimal levels. The model shows decline in N concentration due to the DM accumulation of temperate grass pastures. Data were compared to model by the root mean square deviation analysis. Dilution coefficient (β), used in all pasture samples, was lower than -0.60. Highest N concentration decline in plant tissues, due to DM accumulation, occurred in RY + WC pastures (β = -0.94), followed by RY + FP (β = - 0.86) and RY + BO (β = - 0.67), respectively. Ryegrass intercropped with white clover showed the highest N content in plant tissue, with a nitrogen nutrition index close to the proposed model
Performance and metabolic pattern of feedlot lambs using soyabean hulls associated to different non-protein nitrogen sources
The aim of this study was to evaluate the metabolic profile of the use of soyabean hulls associated with two sources of non-protein nitrogen (NPN) on the finishing of feedlot lambs. Eighty crossbred Suffolk non-castrated lambs aging 69±6 days and weighing 23.11±1.78 kg were used. Lambs were randomly allocated into 4 experimental groups according to the NPN source: conventional urea (1%); protected urea; 1% protected urea + 0.5% conventional urea; and a control group, which did not receive urea supplementation. Blood samples were collected weekly to determine the plasma concentrations of urea, albumine, γ-glutamiltransferase (GGT), calcium and phosphorus. The control group had higher average daily gain and final weight than protected urea and protected urea + conventional urea groups; however, it did not differ from the conventional urea group. No differences between the groups were observed for dry matter intake, feed conversion or warm carcass yield and carcass finishing. Regarding the serum protein profile, the o group fed conventional urea had higher serum concentration of urea than that of protected + conventional urea. Urea supplementation did not improve the performance of feedlot lambs fed diets with high level of soybean hulls
O custo operacional efetivo (COEf) representou R 1,77 e R 85.27/animal. In this cost ewes contributed with 68.55%, followed by the lamb cost (0-67 days), which represented 25.57% and rams with only 5.88%. The average CT in feedlot finishing was of R 57.35 or 99.33% of CT finishing. Variables of higher representativeness of COEf were: ration (61.56%) and taxes (31.06%). Diets with higher positive gross margin (MB)/lamb were GUC and CG (R 44.35), respectively. All diets presented negative net margin (ML) and economic return (RE). In finishing systems of feedlot lamb, the use of diets with no additional source of non-protein nitrogen is the option that allows better economic and productivity results
