    Christa Wolf's novel Sommerstück, written between the mid-seventies and 1989 (the year of the collapse of the socialist East German state), when it was published, stands as proof of the author's sense of disillusionment, partly as a result of the authoritarianism of the leadership of the GDR since the time of the forced emigration of poet and songwriter, Wolf Biermann, in 1976. Yet more than that Wolf portrays in her novel the 'outbreak' or unleashing of a universally destructive, demonic power or spirit. This theme is also reflected in Sarah Kirsch's lyric poetry from that time, especially in the 'Vogel-Gedichten' ('bird-poems'), which Christa Wolf, by way of quote, reference and allusion, brings into Sommerstück. For this reason the analysis - firstly as independent works - of the poems which appear in Wolf's novel focuses primarily on the three 'Vogel-Gedichte'. The second chapter deals Christa Wolf's Sommerstück. The third chapter concerns the location and function of the poems of Sarah Kirsch within the context of the novel. It is concluded that the lyric poetry of Sarah Kirsch, in conjunction with the characterisation of Bella in the novel, who shows similarities to the poet, provides a background of rich association for Wolf's own thematic treatment, which in turn renders an often inaccurate and unflattering portrayal of Sarah Kirsch, but more particularly - as determined within the scope of this thesis - a distortion of her art

    Next-generation mitogenomics: A comparison of approaches applied to caecilian amphibian phylogeny

    Mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) sequences are being generated with increasing speed due to the advances of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology and associated analytical tools. However, detailed comparisons to explore the utility of alternative NGS approaches applied to the same taxa have not been undertaken. We compared a 'traditional' Sanger sequencing method with two NGS approaches (shotgun sequencing and non-indexed, multiplex amplicon sequencing) on four different sequencing platforms (Illumina's HiSeq and MiSeq, Roche's 454 GS FLX, and Life Technologies' Ion Torrent) to produce seven (near-) complete mitogenomes from six species that form a small radiation of caecilian amphibians from the Seychelles. The fastest, most accurate method of obtaining mitogenome sequences that we tested was direct sequencing of genomic DNA (shotgun sequencing) using the MiSeq platform. Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses using seven different partitioning strategies were unable to resolve compellingly all phylogenetic relationships among the Seychelles caecilian species, indicating the need for additional data in this case

    Impact of COVID-19 on cardiovascular testing in the United States versus the rest of the world

    Objectives: This study sought to quantify and compare the decline in volumes of cardiovascular procedures between the United States and non-US institutions during the early phase of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the care of many non-COVID-19 illnesses. Reductions in diagnostic cardiovascular testing around the world have led to concerns over the implications of reduced testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. Methods: Data were submitted to the INCAPS-COVID (International Atomic Energy Agency Non-Invasive Cardiology Protocols Study of COVID-19), a multinational registry comprising 909 institutions in 108 countries (including 155 facilities in 40 U.S. states), assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. Data were obtained for April 2020 and compared with volumes of baseline procedures from March 2019. We compared laboratory characteristics, practices, and procedure volumes between U.S. and non-U.S. facilities and between U.S. geographic regions and identified factors associated with volume reduction in the United States. Results: Reductions in the volumes of procedures in the United States were similar to those in non-U.S. facilities (68% vs. 63%, respectively; p = 0.237), although U.S. facilities reported greater reductions in invasive coronary angiography (69% vs. 53%, respectively; p < 0.001). Significantly more U.S. facilities reported increased use of telehealth and patient screening measures than non-U.S. facilities, such as temperature checks, symptom screenings, and COVID-19 testing. Reductions in volumes of procedures differed between U.S. regions, with larger declines observed in the Northeast (76%) and Midwest (74%) than in the South (62%) and West (44%). Prevalence of COVID-19, staff redeployments, outpatient centers, and urban centers were associated with greater reductions in volume in U.S. facilities in a multivariable analysis. Conclusions: We observed marked reductions in U.S. cardiovascular testing in the early phase of the pandemic and significant variability between U.S. regions. The association between reductions of volumes and COVID-19 prevalence in the United States highlighted the need for proactive efforts to maintain access to cardiovascular testing in areas most affected by outbreaks of COVID-19 infection

    Nutritional red flags in children with cerebral palsy

    BACKGROUND & AIMS: Children with cerebral palsy (CP) are at risk for under-nutrition. The European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) guidelines identified anthropometric nutritional red flags for neurologically impaired children: weight for age z-score (WFA) 2 and dysphagia were associated with a higher risk for lower scores of nearly all nutritional indices. CONCLUSIONS: Underweight was detected in almost three quarters of CP patients with GMFCS 5 classification, whereas deficits in subcutaneous fat and arm muscle reserve were observed in one fifth. Nutritional red flags, present in about 40% of the Flemish CP children, were apparently not successfully addressed in clinical practice, since up to one-fifth of CP patients with warning signs lost even further weight in the following 6 months.     Growth of children in Greenland exceeds the World Health Organization growth charts

    AIM: Previous studies have found high rates of stunted linear growth in Greenlandic children. We measured growth patterns in Greenland and compared them with international growth charts. METHODS: The study cohort comprised 279 healthy children aged 6-10 years in 2012. They participated in two pregnancy and birth cohorts in Greenland and longitudinal growth data as birth was extracted from their medical records. Growth reference ranges were estimated with the lambda-mu-sigma (LMS) method and compared with growth charts from Denmark and the World Health Organization (WHO). RESULTS: The children's mean length, weight and head circumference were significantly larger than the WHO growth charts (p < 0.001). We found that 21-28% of the children aged zero to one years exceeded the WHO growth chart for length by more than two standard deviations. For weight and head circumference, 9-16% of the children aged 0-10 years and 9-11% of the children from zero to two years exceeded the WHO charts by more than two standard deviations. The Danish references were exceeded to a lesser degree. CONCLUSION: This study showed that the growth of Greenlandic children up to 10 years was no longer stunted.
