    Convergent interviewing : a qualitative diagnostic technique for researchers

    Purpose &ndash; This paper aims to widen knowledge of and explore how convergent interviewing can be used to identify key issues within an organization.Design/methodology/approach &ndash; This paper introduces the convergent interviewing technique and describes the method of selecting the interview subjects. The construction of a round of interviews is explained. The content of the interviews is described and the particular probing nature of the questions demanded by the convergent interview process is explained. The ways to analyze the full set of interviews for groupings or categories is also described. The case study example of a broad research question about influences on work behaviors in a local government council is used to illustrate the convergent interviewing technique.Findings &ndash; The key issues revealed by using the technique can be subsequently used for a variety of research and consulting purposes and settings. Convergent interviewing is an effective research method, which conserves resources.Originality/value &ndash; Convergent interviewing enables researchers to determine the most important and/or key issues within a population rather than a full list of issues in an organization or barriers to change in a particular organizational context. <br /

    Using organizational justice to predict in-role and extra-role performance works in different ways for men relative to women

    Distributive, procedural, interpersonal and informational justices were included in this study of gender differences in in-role and extra-role behavior. Distributive justice predicted performance, organizational commitment and OCB for men but only performance and job satisfaction for women. Procedural justice predicted job satisfaction for men and did not predict any outcomes for women. Informational justice predicted job satisfaction for both male and female respondents. Informational justice predicted female but not male organizational commitment and in-role performance. Interpersonal justice predicted male but not female organizational citizenship behavior. The study demonstrates important distinctions between the four organizational justice types and how men and women respond differently to those distinctions. The differences in the drivers of in-role performance between men and women may also have practical implications for managers. For example, distributive justice was a direct in-role performance driver for both genders, but informational justice provides an incremental direct effect for women.<br /

    Picosecond electrical spectroscopy using monolithic GaAs circuits

    This article describes an experimental apparatus for free-space mm-wave transmission measurements (spectroscopy). GaAs nonlinear transmission lines and sampling circuits are used as picosecond pulse generators and detectors, with planar monolithic bowtie antennas with associated substrate lenses used as the radiating and receiving elements. The received pulse is 270 mV amplitude and 2.4 ps rise time. Through Fourier transformation of the received pulse, 30–250 GHz measurements are demonstrated with <=0.3 dB (rms) accuracy

    Micro-Structured Ferromagnetic Tubes for Spin Wave Excitation

    Micron scale ferromagnetic tubes placed on the ends of ferromagnetic CoTaZr spin waveguides are explored in order to enhance the excitation of Backward Volume Magnetostatic Spin Waves. The tubes produce a closed magnetic circuit about the signal line of the coplanar waveguide and are, at the same time, magnetically contiguous with the spin waveguide. This results in a 10 fold increase in spin wave amplitude. However, the tube geometry distorts the magnetic field near the spin waveguide and relatively high biasing magnetic fields are required to establish well defined spin waves.     Uncertainty growth and forecast reliability during extratropical cyclogenesis

    In global numerical weather prediction, the strongest contribution to ensemble variance growth over the first few days is at synoptic scales. Hence it is particularly important to ensure that this synoptic-scale variance is reliable. Here we focus on wintertime synoptic-scale growth in the North Atlantic storm track. In the 12 h background forecasts of the Ensemble of Data Assimilations (EDA) from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), we find that initial variance growth at synoptic scales tends to be organized in particular flow situations, such as during the deepening of cyclones (cyclogenesis). Both baroclinic and diabatic aspects may be involved in the overall growth rate. However, evaluation of reliability through use of an extended error–spread equation indicates that the ECMWF ensemble forecast, which is initialized from the EDA but with additional singular vector perturbations, appears to have too much variance at a lead time of 2 d and that this over-spread is associated with cyclogenesis situations. Comparison of variance growth rates and reliability with other forecast systems within The International Grand Global Ensemble (TIGGE) archive indicates some sensitivity to the model or its initialization. For the ECMWF ensemble forecast, sensitivity experiments suggest that a large part of the total day-2 spread in cyclogenesis cases is associated with the growth of EDA uncertainty, but up to 25 % can be associated with the additional singular vector perturbations to the initial conditions and up to 25 % with the representation of model uncertainty. The sensitivities of spread to resolution, the explicit representation of convection, and the assimilation of local observations are also considered. The study raises the question of whether the EDA now successfully represents initial uncertainty (and the enhanced growth rates associated with cyclogenesis) to the extent that singular vector perturbations could be reduced in magnitude to improve storm track reliability. This would leave a more seamless forecast system, allowing short-range diagnostics to better help improve the model and model-uncertainty representation, which could be beneficial throughout the forecast range.</p

    Broadband Optical Serrodyne Frequency Shifting

    We demonstrate serrodyne frequency shifting of light from 200 MHz to 1.2 GHz with an efficiency of better than 60 percent. The frequency shift is imparted by an electro-optic phase modulator driven by a high-frequency, high-fidelity sawtooth waveform that is passively generated by a commercially available Non-Linear Transmission Line (NLTL). We also implement a push-pull configuration using two serrodyne-driven phase modulators allowing for continuous tuning between -1.6 GHz and +1.6 GHz. Compared to competing technologies, this technique is simple and robust, and offers the largest available tuning range in this frequency band.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure

    Phase II study of docetaxel in combination with epirubicin and protracted venous infusion 5-fluorouracil (ETF) in patients with recurrent or metastatic breast cancer. A Yorkshire breast cancer research group study

    This study was originally designed as a phase I/II study, with a dose escalation of docetaxel in combination with epirubicin 50 mg m⁻² and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) 200 mg m⁻² day⁻¹. However, as dose escalation was not possible, the study is reported as a phase II study of the combination to assess response and toxicity. A total of 51 patients with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer were treated on this phase II study, with doses of docetaxel 50 mg m⁻², epirubicin 50 mg m⁻² and infusional 5-FU 200 mg m⁻² day⁻¹ for 21 days. The main toxicity of this combination was neutropenia with 89% of patients having grade 3 and 4 neutropenia, and 39% of patients experiencing febrile neutropenia. Nonhaematological toxicity was mild. The overall response rate in the assessable patients was 64%, with median progression-free survival of 38 weeks, and median survival of 70 weeks. The ETF regimen was found to be toxic, and it was not possible to escalate the dose of docetaxel above the first dose level. This regimen has therefore not been taken any further, but as a development of this a new study is ongoing, combining 3-weekly epirubicin, weekly docetaxel and capecitabine, days 1-14

    Dispersion and spin wave "tunneling" in nano-structured magnetostatic spin waveguides

    Magnetostatic spin wave dispersion and loss are measured in micron scale spin wave-guides in ferromagnetic, metallic CoTaZr. Results are in good agreement with model calculations of spin wave dispersion. The measured attenuation lengths, of the order of 3um, are several of orders of magnitude shorter than that predicted from eddy currents in these thin wires. Spin waves effectively "tunnel" through air gaps, produced by focused ion beam etching, as large as 1.5 um.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figure
