Entanglement entropy of integer Quantum Hall states
We compute the entanglement entropy, in real space, of the ground state of
the integer Quantum Hall states for three different domains embedded in the
torus, the disk and the sphere. We establish the validity of the area law with
a vanishing value of the topological entanglement entropy. The entropy per unit
length of the perimeter depends on the filling fraction, but it is independent
of the geometry.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, minor changes, one reference adde
Designing Innovative PV-powered applications for the urban environment:A design-driven multidisciplinary approach
The transport and residential sectors are two of the key areas where the transition to a fully renewable energy supply needs to take place in order to limit the emission of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. This thesis therefore explores how a multidisciplinary design-driven research approach can be used to develop technically functional, financially feasible and low-emissions PV-powered applications for these two sectors which are more likely to be adopted by end users. A feasibility model was first developed to simulate the operation of a grid-connected solar EV charging station with energy storage, showing that the longer an EV is driven the more affordable solar-powered charging becomes and a higher environmental dividend is achieved. A subsequent study for eight locations around the world indicates that with the right combination of battery and PV system sizes this charging system can be a feasible solution from a technical, financial and environmental perspective in comparison with both a gasoline-fuelled vehicle and a grid-charged EV. A conceptual design study resulted in the development of eleven innovative solar mobility applications, ranging from mobile EV charging stations to solar-powered bicycles and public transportation. Energy balance calculations for two sample locations show that the extent to which the PV electricity produced by these systems will meet vehicle demand will vary significantly depending on the type of application. Results from a user study aimed at evaluating the potential adoption of four existing solar-powered mobility applications found that despite having a mostly positive impression, respondents’ likelihood to adopt these applications in the near future was relatively low. However, a vast majority of respondents willing to pay more for an EV with integrated solar cells indicates that these applications are perceived as having an added value. Finally, the performance of home energy management system (HEMS) prototypes was evaluated using both simulation and user tests. This dual approach proved useful for quickly and accurately validating the operation of these products, but conflicting results during user tests highlight the complexity of user behaviour around household energy consumption and the importance of carefully designing HEMS to ensure they achieve their intended purpose
Case study the poultry industry in Colombia
"As developing countries open their economies further to trade, their food industries are striving to raise safety and quality standards in order to compete in new markets. Such is the case with the Colombian poultry industry... Critical questions face the Colombian poultry industry: Is it ready to compete with foreign poultry producers on price, quality, and safety? Can industry efforts to produce better quality products assure an increased share of domestic and regional markets? This brief reviews the private initiatives undertaken by the Colombian poultry industry to assure food safety in light of these questions." from TextFood safety ,food security ,Public health ,
Synergistic Team Composition
Effective teams are crucial for organisations, especially in environments
that require teams to be constantly created and dismantled, such as software
development, scientific experiments, crowd-sourcing, or the classroom. Key
factors influencing team performance are competences and personality of team
members. Hence, we present a computational model to compose proficient and
congenial teams based on individuals' personalities and their competences to
perform tasks of different nature. With this purpose, we extend Wilde's
post-Jungian method for team composition, which solely employs individuals'
personalities. The aim of this study is to create a model to partition agents
into teams that are balanced in competences, personality and gender. Finally,
we present some preliminary empirical results that we obtained when analysing
student performance. Results show the benefits of a more informed team
composition that exploits individuals' competences besides information about
their personalities
El género de la novela en Marruecos: su delimitación y periodización
This study broaches the role played by critical literary tendencies in Morocco upon the establishment and demarcation of the genre of the novel, which ought to be understood here as a cultural institution related to cultural and social conventions. Thus, this study poses, from the formation phases of the genre until the late years of the past century, how the theoretical positions had their influences, regard-ing the fiction limits, the difference between novel and autobiography, which texts enter the canon, and its own boundaries y periods.
Qubism: self-similar visualization of many-body wavefunctions
A visualization scheme for quantum many-body wavefunctions is described,
which we have termed qubism. Its main property is its recursivity: increasing
the number of qubits reflects in an increase in the image resolution. Thus, the
plots are typically fractal. As examples, we provide images for the ground
states of commonly used Hamiltonians in condensed matter and cold atom physics,
such as Heisenberg or ITF. Many features of the wavefunction, such as
magnetization, correlations and criticality, can be visualized as properties of
the images. In particular, factorizability can be easily spotted, and a way to
estimate the entanglement entropy from the image is provided
