An Equity Council and the Struggle to Transform a School District

    Get PDF
Significant efforts at the national, state and local levels have focused on closing achievement gaps between student populations in public schools. Some research suggests that parents and community members can help hold schools accountable for meeting academic and other goals. The Equity Council serves in an advisory role to the Wilson County school board in a district in the southeastern part of the United States. The council monitors equity in the district on several measures, including the hiring of minority educators, student achievement and suspension rates. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand and describe the functioning of the Equity Council. Data from interviews, observations and artifacts were analyzed according to Bolman and Deal’s (2008) four frames. Critical theory served as the conceptual framework for the study. Findings suggest that the bylaws of the council and rules of discourse limit the autonomy of the council. However, the group also resists the limitations placed on it through actions such as negotiating improved communication with school district employees and inviting principals to present at council meetings. Additional questions were raised for possible future action research involving the council, including an investigation of media for communication, further study of student discipline, and public discussion of community issues

Barriers and Opportunities to Achieving Safe Drinking Water in Bangladesh: A System Dynamics Approach

Although Bangladesh is a nation rich with freshwater resources, many of the country’s citizens lack access to safe drinking water. Between 35 and 77 million residents are estimated to have been chronically exposed to unacceptable concentrations of arsenic, a known carcinogen, through their drinking water. Additionally, the presence of bacterial contamination in surface water and shallow aquifers limits the availability of safe source water alternatives. Governmental and non-governmental organizations have attempted to remedy the drinking water crisis for decades with little widespread or long-lasting success. Often the most successful mitigation techniques include digging deep tubewells, which have a lower likelihood of arsenic and microbial contamination, and installing decentralized water treatment technologies designed to remove certain contaminants. However, changing environmental conditions, increasing urbanization, and the presence of strong cultural norms and social preferences are likely to have an effect on the success of many commonly employed mitigation techniques. Therefore, an analysis of the environmental, socioeconomic, and technological factors is needed to identify the current barriers to providing safe water in Bangladesh as well as the opportunities for more effective interventions. Data from previous studies was compiled and analyzed to create a causal loop diagram (CLD) in order to organize important factors, identify exogenous forces, and define causal relationships among different factors. Six driving forces were identified in the current system, and several interventions were purposed, including the integration of community preferences in the decision-making process and technology implementation and increased water testing.Master of ScienceSchool for Environment and SustainabilityUniversity of Michiganhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/143196/1/Rodriguez_Grace_Thesis.pd

GOLLUM: a next-generation simulation tool for electron, thermal and spin transport

    Get PDF
We have developed an efficient simulation tool 'GOLLUM' for the computation of electrical, spin and thermal transport characteristics of complex nanostructures. The new multi-scale, multi-terminal tool addresses a number of new challenges and functionalities that have emerged in nanoscale-scale transport over the past few years. To illustrate the flexibility and functionality of GOLLUM, we present a range of demonstrator calculations encompassing charge, spin and thermal transport, corrections to density functional theory such as LDA+U and spectral adjustments, transport in the presence of non-collinear magnetism, the quantum-Hall effect, Kondo and Coulomb blockade effects, finite-voltage transport, multi-terminal transport, quantum pumps, superconducting nanostructures, environmental effects and pulling curves and conductance histograms for mechanically-controlled-break-junction experiments.Comment: 66 journal pages, 57 figure

The present project was made to provide a solution to the biggest problem of families that is cardiac arrest. According to the World Health Organization (2018), it is one of the leading causes of mortality in the world, during the last 15 years, which, in 2016, caused 15.2 million registered deaths. The problem lies in the lack of detection devices for cardiac arrest, and although there is research on heart disease, in our town there are no statistics related to electronic devices that detect cardiac arrest. To solve this problem, an electronic wristband was developed to measure the heart rate, temperature and level of sweating of the user using sensors located inside of the wristband, capturing body signals and sending data to the mobile application where means of diffuse logic will send an alert to the person responsible to help the user with cardiac arrest. The investigation of the factors that cause cardiac arrest (its symptoms) was carried out by means of the interview with the cardiology doctor, and thus determine the variables necessary for the development of the present project. To then develop the expert system based on fuzzy logic and the electronic wristband. Using the Agile Scrum methodology, which allows presenting the product periodically, applying good practices of teamwork, facilitating the finding of optimal and timely solutions, to the problems during the development of the project. Once the development was concluded, the variables were measured using the defined formulas of the indicators. At the end of the project, the proposed system is capable of early detection of cardiac arrest in relapsed patients with heart problems
