Exploring the transcriptomic data of the Australian paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus
Ixodes holocyclus is the paralysis tick commonly found in Australia. I. holocyclus does not cause paralysis in the primary host – bandicoots, but markedly affects secondary hosts such as companion animals, livestock and humans. Holocyclotoxins are the neurotoxin molecules in I. holocyclus responsible for paralysis symptoms. There is a limited understanding of holocyclotoxins due to the difficulties in purifying and expressing these toxins in vitro. Next-generation sequencing technologies were utilised for the first time to generate transcriptome data from two cDNA samples –salivary glands samples collected from female adult ticks engorged on paralysed companion animals and on bandicoots. Contigencoded proteins in each library were annotated according to their best BLAST match against several databases and functionally assigned into six protein categories: housekeeping, transposable elements, pathogen-related, hypothetical, secreted and novel. The “secreted protein” category is comprised of ten protein families: enzymes, protease inhibitors, antigens, mucins, immunity-related, lipocalins, glycinerich, putative secreted, salivary and toxin-like. Comparisons of contig representation between the two libraries reveal the differential expression of tick proteins collected from different hosts. Molecular systematics of swifts of the genus Chaetura (Aves: Apodiformes: Apodidae)
Phylogenetic relationships among swifts of the morphologically conservative genus Chaetura were studied using mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences. Taxon sampling included all species and 21 of 30 taxa (species and subspecies) within Chaetura. Our results indicate that Chaetura is monophyletic and support the division of the genus into the two subgenera previously identified using plumage characters. However, our genetic data, when considered in combination with phenotypic data, appear to be at odds with the current classification of some species of Chaetura. We recommend that C. viridipennis, currently generally treated as specifically distinct from C. chapmani, be returned to its former status as C. chapmani viridipennis, and that C. andrei, now generally regarded as synonymous with C. vauxi aphanes, again be recognized as a valid species. Widespread Neotropical species C. spinicaudus is paraphyletic with respect to more range-restricted species C. fumosa, C. egregia, and C. martinica. Geographically structured genetic variation within some other species of Chaetura, especially notable in C. cinereiventris, suggests that future study may lead to recognition of additional species in this genus. Biogeographic analysis indicated that Chaetura originated in South America and identified several dispersal events to Middle and North America following the formation of the Isthmus of Panama

Large non-Gaussianity from two-component hybrid inflation
We study the generation of non-Gaussianity in models of hybrid inflation with
two inflaton fields, (2-brid inflation). We analyse the region in the parameter
and the initial condition space where a large non-Gaussianity may be generated
during slow-roll inflation which is generally characterised by a large f_NL,
tau_NL and a small g_NL. For certain parameter values we can satisfy
tau_NL>>f_NL^2. The bispectrum is of the local type but may have a significant
scale dependence. We show that the loop corrections to the power spectrum and
bispectrum are suppressed during inflation, if one assume that the fields
follow a classical background trajectory. We also include the effect of the
waterfall field, which can lead to a significant change in the observables
after the waterfall field is destabilised, depending on the couplings between

Magnetism in systems with various dimensionality: A comparison between Fe and Co
A systematic ab initio study is performed for the spin and orbital moments
and for the validity of the sum rules for x-ray magnetic circular dichroism for
Fe systems with various dimensionality (bulk, Pt-supported monolayers and
monatomic wires, free-standing monolayers and monatomic wires). Qualitatively,
the results are similar to those for the respective Co systems, with the main
difference that for the monatomic Fe wires the term in the spin sum rule
is much larger than for the Co wires. The spin and orbital moments induced in
the Pt substrate are also discussed.Comment: 4 page
Combined local and equilateral non-Gaussianities from multifield DBI inflation
We study multifield aspects of Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) inflation. More
specifically, we consider an inflationary phase driven by the radial motion of
a D-brane in a conical throat and determine how the D-brane fluctuations in the
angular directions can be converted into curvature perturbations when the
tachyonic instability arises at the end of inflation. The simultaneous presence
of multiple fields and non-standard kinetic terms gives both local and
equilateral shapes for non-Gaussianities in the bispectrum. We also study the
trispectrum, pointing out that it acquires a particular momentum dependent
component whose amplitude is given by . We show that
this relation is valid in every multifield DBI model, in particular for any
brane trajectory, and thus constitutes an interesting observational signature

Loop Corrections to Cosmological Perturbations in Multi-field Inflationary Models
We investigate one-loop quantum corrections to the power spectrum of
adiabatic perturbation from entropy modes/adiabatic mode cross-interactions in
multiple DBI inflationary models. We find that due to the non-canonical kinetic
term in DBI models, the loop corrections are enhanced by slow-varying parameter
and small sound speed . Thus, in general the loop-corrections
in multi-DBI models can be large. Moreover, we find that the loop-corrections
