Does the proton-to-electron mass ratio vary in the course of cosmological evolution?
The possible cosmological variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio was
estimated by measuring the H_2 wavelengths in the high-resolution spectrum of
the quasar Q~0347-382. Our analysis yielded an estimate for the possible
deviation of \mu value in the past, 10 Gyr ago: for the unweighted value
; for the weighted value Since the significance of the both
results does not exceed 3, further observations are needed to increase
the statistical significance. In any case, this result may be considered as the
most stringent estimate on an upper limit of a possible variation of \mu (95%
C.L.): This value serves as an
effective tool for selection of models determining a relation between possible
cosmological deviations of the fine-structure constant \alpha and the

Macroscopic Phase Coherence of Defective Vortex Lattices in Two Dimensions
The superfluid density is calculated theoretically for incompressible vortex
lattices in two dimensions that have isolated dislocations quenched in by a
random arrangement of pinned vortices. The latter are assumed to be sparse and
to be fixed to material defects. It is shown that the pinned vortices act to
confine a single dislocation of the vortex lattice along its glide plane.
Plastic creep of the two-dimensional vortex lattice is thereby impeded, and
macroscopic phase coherence results at low temperature in the limit of a dilute

Elastomer Compound Developed for High Wear Applications
The U.S. Army is currently spending 300 million dollars per year replacing rubber track pads. An experimental rubber compound has been developed which exhibits 2 to 3 times greater service life than standard production pad compounds. To improve the service life of the tank track pads various aspects of rubber chemistry were explored including polymer, curing and reinforcing systems. Compounds that exhibited superior physical properties based on laboratory data were then fabricated into tank pads and field tested. This paper will discuss the compounding studies, laboratory data and field testing that led to the high wear elastomer compound
Nonequilibrium Phase Transitions in Directed Small-World Networks
Many social, biological, and economic systems can be approached by complex
networks of interacting units. The behaviour of several models on small-world
networks has recently been studied. These models are expected to capture the
essential features of the complex processes taking place on real networks like
disease spreading, formation of public opinion, distribution of wealth, etc. In
many of these systems relations are directed, in the sense that links only act
in one direction (outwards or inwards). We investigate the effect of directed
links on the behaviour of a simple spin-like model evolving on a small-world
network. We show that directed networks may lead to a highly nontrivial phase

Complexity-entropy analysis at different levels of organization in written language
Written language is complex. A written text can be considered an attempt to
convey a meaningful message which ends up being constrained by language rules,
context dependence and highly redundant in its use of resources. Despite all
these constraints, unpredictability is an essential element of natural
language. Here we present the use of entropic measures to assert the balance
between predictability and surprise in written text. In short, it is possible
to measure innovation and context preservation in a document. It is shown that
this can also be done at the different levels of organization of a text. The
type of analysis presented is reasonably general, and can also be used to
analyze the same balance in other complex messages such as DNA, where a
hierarchy of organizational levels are known to exist
