    Quintessential Kination and Thermal Production of SUSY e-WIMPs

    The impact of a kination-dominated phase generated by a quintessential exponential model on the thermal abundance of Supersymmetric (SUSY) extremely Weekly Interacting Massive Particles (e-WIMPs) is investigated. For values of the quintessential energy-density parameter on the eve of nucleosynthesis close to its upper bound, we find that: (i) the gravitino constraint is totally evaded for unstable gravitinos; (ii) the thermal abundance of stable gravitinos is not sufficient to account for the cold dark matter of the universe; (iii) the thermal abundance of axinos can satisfy the cold dark matter constraint for values of the initial (``reheating'') temperature well above those required in the standard cosmology.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of 4th International Workshop On The Dark Side Of The Universe (DSU 2008) 1-5 Jun 2008, Cairo, Egyp

    DESIGN, FABRICATION AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF A FLAT PLATE COLLECTOR SIMULATOR

    In this article, a flat plate collector simulator was designed and developed based on the use of electric heaters and a power control system. A computational algorithm aimed at determining the relationship between the incident solar energy on the collector absorber plate and the corresponding amount of power that must be supplied by the electrical resistance was developed. The variation in power is obtained by regulating the voltage fed through the assembly. With such regulation, simulating typical profiles of insolation over a day was possible. In the assessment of the average solar radiation data obtained by satellite imagery analysis (SWERA Project), the results showed that the thermal behavior of the simulator collector was close with a real behavior. Therefore, it can be used to determine the operating characteristics of auxiliary power systems as heat pumps, electrical systems or water heating systems.     Dark Matter and Yukawa Unification with Massive Neutrinos

    We revisit the WMAP dark matter constraints on Yukawa Unification in the presence of massive neutrinos. The large neutrino mixing indicated by the data modifies the predictions for the bottom quark mass, and enables Yukawa also for large tanβ\tan\beta, and for positive μ\mu that were previously disfavoured.     SOCIO-ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE OF A SOLAR FLAT PLATE COLLECTOR BASED IN A HEAT PUMP WATER HEATING SYSTEM IN THE BRAZILIAN SOUTHEAST

    By increasing renewable energy demand, the use of solar energy has been widely investigated over the recent years. Brazil is a privileged country in terms of the levels of receivable solar radiation in almost all over its territory. However, as there are days when there is a deficit in solar energy, because the day be cloudy or rainy days, and for this reason, solar collectors need a support to contribute to the water heating to the desired temperature. In this work, an experimental study of a heat pump operated with R-134a, as an ancillary equipment for a solar water heating system in Belo Horizonte city has been accomplished. For this project, is used a set of electrical resistances for by a power control step, simulate historical annual values of solar radiation. In the results, it was observed that is achieved through the collection of solar energy the temperature of 45°C in the reservoir only in January, and the other eleven months is necessary to use the heat pump to achieve reach that temperature. With the heat pump operating in conditions similar to real conditions gave an average annual consumption of 137.65 kWh and a cost of R$ 60.61

    Long-term temperature prediction with hybrid autoencoder algorithms

    This paper proposes two hybrid approaches based on Autoencoders (AEs) for long-term temperature prediction. The first algorithm comprises an AE trained to learn temperature patterns, which is then linked to a second AE, used to detect possible anomalies and provide a final temperature prediction. The second proposed approach involves training an AE and then using the resulting latent space as input of a neural network, which will provide the final prediction output. Both approaches are tested in long-term air temperature prediction in European cities: seven European locations where major heat waves occurred have been considered. The long- term temperature prediction for the entire year of the heatwave events has been analysed. Results show that the proposed approaches can obtain accurate long-term (up to 4 weeks) temperature prediction, improving Persistence and Climatology in the benchmark models compared. In heatwave periods, where the persistence of the temperature is extremely high, our approach beat the persistence operator in three locations and works similarly in the rest of the cases, showing the potential of this AE-based method for long-term temperature prediction

    Effects of proanthocyanidin-functionalized hydroxyapatite nanoparticles on dentin bonding

    Objectives To evaluate the effect of proanthocyanidin-functionalized hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (nHAp_PA) used as pretreatment at different concentrations on the microtensile bond strength (mu TBS) and endogenous enzymatic activity (MMPs) on pH-cycled dentin after 24 h and 6 months of artificial aging. Materials and methods Fifty human sound dentin blocks were randomly assigned to 5 groups (n = 10): (i) negative control (no treatment); (ii) positive control (pH-cycling); (iii) pH-cycling + 2% nHAp_PA for 60s; (iv) pH-cycling + 6.5% nHAp_PA for 60s; (v) pH-cycling + 15% nHAp_PA for 60s. A self-etch adhesive was used for bonding procedures before resin composite build-ups. Specimens were tested with the mu TBS test after 24 h and 6 months of laboratory storage. The proteolytic activity in each group was evaluated with gelatin zymography and in situ zymography. Data were statistically analyzed (p < 0.05). Results At 24 h, the TBS of the experimental groups were significantly higher than the controls (p <= 0.001), and no differences were observed between different concentrations (p > 0.05). Artificial aging significantly decreased bond strength in all groups (p <= 0.008); however, nHAp_PA 2% still yielded higher bonding values than controls (p <= 0.007). The groups pretreated with nHAp_PA exhibited lower MMP-9 and MMP-2 activities compared to the positive control group and almost the same enzymatic activity as the negative control group. In situ zymography showed that after 6 months of aging, nHAp_PA 2% and nHAp_PA 6,5% decreased enzymatic activity as well as the negative control. Conclusions Dentin pretreatment with nHAp_PA increased the bonding performance of a self-etch adhesive and decreased MMP-2 and MMP-9 activities after 6 months
