    Get PDF
Recent historical research on Romance languages has been updated using concepts such as speech acts from the field of Pragmatics, or discourse tradition rooted in the variationist ideas of German linguists. Equally, new methodologies like corpus linguistics are used to expand the database on which our analysis is based. This study presents the theoretical foundations for the creation of a diachronic discourse corpus in Spanish which aims to combine these new developments offering researchers a set of texts of varied origin and diachrony, whose common factor is that they are used to express complaints. The relationship between discourse tradition and acts of speech is discussed and samples are presented to show the linguistic results that can be provided by this type of corpus

Childhood Archaeology is a recent field of research whose aim is the identification of children’s presence and activity in an archaeological context through the study of archaeological record so as to know the way that children were treated in the past. This paper analyses several children’s burials that have been discovered in the vaccean oppidum of Pintia (Padilla de Duero/Peñafiel, Valladolid) since 1980s in order to look at the funerary practices and grave goods that children received according to their gender, age, social status…Departamento de Prehistoria, Arqueología, Antropología Social y Ciencias y Técnicas HistoriográficasGrado en Histori

Orientational transitions in a nematic confined by competing surfaces

The effect of confinement on the orientational structure of a nematic liquid crystal model has been investigated by using a version of density-functional theory (DFT). We have focused on the case of a nematic confined by opposing flat surfaces, in slab geometry (slit pore), which favor planar molecular alignment (parallel to the surface) and homeotropic alignment (perpendicular to the surface), respectively. The spatial dependence of the tilt angle of the director with respect to the surface normal has been studied, as well as the tensorial order parameter describing the molecular order around the director. For a pore of given width, we find that, for weak surface fields, the alignment of the nematic director is perpendicular to the surface in a region next to the surface favoring homeotropic alignment, and parallel along the rest of the pore, with a interface separating these regions (S phase). For strong surface fields, the director is distorted uniformly, the tilt angle exhibiting a linear dependence with the distance normal to the surface (L phase). Our calculations reveal the existence of a first-order transition between the two director configurations, which is driven by changes in the surface field strength, and also by changes in the pore width. In the latter case the transition occurs, for a given surface field, between the S phase for narrow pores and the L phase for wider pores. A link between the L-S transition and the anchoring transition observed for the semi-infinite case is proposed. We also provide calculations with a phenomenological approach that yields the same main result that DFT in the scale length where this is valid.Comment: submitted to PR

AbstractDue to a lack of solid scientific evidence, an european experts committee have published in Journal of the American College of Cardiology an consensus document about the management of different subgroups of patients with type B aortic dissection. This document is based on a meta-analisys including the recent published experience that includes more than 6700 patients with type B aortic dissection. In spite of the better prognosis compared to type A dissection in the short term, type B dissection has a bad long term prognosis. The conservative management limited to tight blood pressure control and close surveillance to treat complicated cases with open surgery or endovascular therapy is under discussion, specially due to the feasibility and good results of endovascular technique. This consensus intends to support surgeons or doctors who deal with type B dissection and stablishs some management algorithm. We present in this article the conclusions and main data from this consensus document. The posterior publication of 5 years results of INSTEAD study adds an strong scientific evidence against some of this consensus principal conclusions and challenge the consensus just one year later

Ionoluminescence induced by swift heavy ions in silica and quartz: a comparative analysis

Ionoluminescence (IL) of the two SiO2 phases, amorphous silica and crystalline quartz, has been comparatively investigated in this work, in order to learn about the structural defects generated by means of ion irradiation and the role of crystalline order on the damage processes. Irradiations have been performed with Cl at 10 MeV and Br at 15 MeV, corresponding to the electronic stopping regime (i.e., where the electronic stopping power Se is dominant) and well above the amorphization threshold. The light-emission kinetics for the two main emission bands, located at 1.9 eV (652 nm) and 2.7 eV (459 nm), has been measured under the same ion irradiation conditions as a function of fluence for both, silica and quartz. The role of electronic stopping power has been also investigated and discussed within current views for electronic damage. Our experiments provide a rich phenomenological background that should help to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for light emission and defect creation

Electroreflectance spectroscopy in self-assembled quantum dots: lens symmetry

    Get PDF
Modulated electroreflectance spectroscopy ΔR/R\Delta R/R of semiconductor self-assembled quantum dots is investigated. The structure is modeled as dots with lens shape geometry and circular cross section. A microscopic description of the electroreflectance spectrum and optical response in terms of an external electric field (F{\bf F}) and lens geometry have been considered. The field and lens symmetry dependence of all experimental parameters involved in the ΔR/R\Delta R/R spectrum have been considered. Using the effective mass formalism the energies and the electronic states as a function of F{\bf F} and dot parameters are calculated. Also, in the framework of the strongly confined regime general expressions for the excitonic binding energies are reported. Optical selection rules are derived in the cases of the light wave vector perpendicular and parallel to % {\bf F}. Detailed calculation of the Seraphin coefficients and electroreflectance spectrum are performed for the InAs and CdSe nanostructures. Calculations show good agreement with measurements recently performed on CdSe/ZnSe when statistical distribution on size is considered, explaining the main observed characteristic in the electroreflectance spectra

With this paper we try to intend to contribute to the reconciliation with the studies about Art History and Archaeology of Architecture, often confronted because methodological differences. Therefore, we present the archaeologic and artistic studies undertaken by Francisco M.ª Tubino in 1885 in the Alcázar of Seville. This work was the first been made supported by a methodological practice in this monumental site, and it marks a turning point about artistic and archaeologic historiography. Tubino’s work is a reflection of a time when there wasn’t any difference between the art historian and the archaeologist and it may illustrate about teamwork between archaeologic and historical artistic methodology
