    Clinical and epidemiological characterization of a lymphogranuloma venereum outbreak in Madrid, Spain: co-circulation of two variants

    AbstractThe lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) outbreak described in the Netherlands in 2003, increased the interest in the genotyping of Chlamydia trachomatis. Although international surveillance programmes were implemented, these studies slowly decreased in the following years. Now data have revealed a new accumulation of LGV cases in those European countries with extended surveillance programmes. Between March 2009 and November 2011, a study was carried out to detect LGV cases in Madrid. The study was based on screening of C. trachomatis using commercial kits, followed by real-time pmpH-PCR discriminating LGV strains, and finally ompA gene was sequenced for phylogenetic reconstruction. Ninety-four LGV infections were identified. The number of cases increased from 10 to 30 and then to 54 during 2009–2011. Incidence of LGV was strongly associated with men who have sex with men; but in 2011, LGV cases were described in women and heterosexual men. Sixty-nine patients were also human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive, with detectable viral loads at the moment of LGV diagnosis, suggesting a high-risk of co-transmission. In fact, in four patients the diagnosis of HIV was simultaneous with LGV infection. The conventional treatment with doxycycline was prescribed in 75 patients, although in three patients the treatment failed. The sequencing of the ompA gene permitted identification of two independent transmission nodes. One constituted by 25 sequences identical to the L2b variant, and a second node including 37 sequences identical to L2. This epidemiological situation characterized by the co-circulation of two LGV variants has not been previously described, reinforcing the need for screening and genotyping of LGV strains

    Numerical analysis for design of bioinspired ceramic modular armors for ballistic protections

    [EN] The exigent requirements for personal protections in terms of energy absorption and ergonomics have led to increasing interest in bioinspired protections. This work focuses on the numerical analysis of ballistic behavior of different bioinspired geometries under impact loadings. Ceramic armors based on ganoid fish scales (the type exhibited by gars, bichirs and reedfishes), placoid fish scales (characterizing sharks and rays) and armadillo natural protection have been considered. Different impact conditions are studied, including perpendicular and oblique impacts to surface protection, different yaw angle, and multiple impacts. Main conclusion is related to the improved efficiency of modular armors against multiple shots exhibiting more localized damage and crack arrest properties.     On the families of orthogonal polynomials associated to the Razavy potential

    We show that there are two different families of (weakly) orthogonal polynomials associated to the quasi-exactly solvable Razavy potential V(x)=(\z \cosh 2x-M)^2 (\z>0, MNM\in\mathbf N). One of these families encompasses the four sets of orthogonal polynomials recently found by Khare and Mandal, while the other one is new. These results are extended to the related periodic potential U(x)=-(\z \cos 2x -M)^2, for which we also construct two different families of weakly orthogonal polynomials. We prove that either of these two families yields the ground state (when MM is odd) and the lowest lying gaps in the energy spectrum of the latter periodic potential up to and including the (M1)th(M-1)^{\rm th} gap and having the same parity as M1M-1. Moreover, we show that the algebraic eigenfunctions obtained in this way are the well-known finite solutions of the Whittaker--Hill (or Hill's three-term) periodic differential equation.     Carcass bone content in wild rabbits hunted in Andalusia (Spain)

    Para caracterizar el contenido de hueso de la canal del conejo de monte ( Oryctolagus cuniculus algirus ) procedente de la ca- za, se analizaron 53 canales encorambradas adquiridas en mercados de abastos de Sevilla (España) con un peso medio de 767,8 g. Las canales encorambradas se desollaron y prepararon para obtener las canales de referencia, que tuvieron un peso medio de 551,2 g, Se realizó el despiece tecnológico propuesto por la World Rabbit Science Association, que rindió un 14,3% de patas delanteras, un 38,0% de patas traseras, un 32,1% de pieza lomo y un 11,4% de caja torácica. El contenido de hueso fue del 16,3% en las patas delanteras, 13,4% en las patas traseras, 9,4% en la pieza lomo, 22,5% en la caja torácica y 13,0% en el conjunto de la canal de referencia. El contenido de hueso de la pata trasera fue un predictor fiable del contenido de hueso de la canal de referencia, pues se obtuvo una R 2 =0,737 (p<0,001). No se encontró dimorfismo sexual en el contenido de hue- so ni correlación entre el peso de la canal y el contenido de hueso de la canal del conejo de monte. En comparación con los valores publicados para razas y líneas de aptitud cárnica a la edad de sacrificio habitual en España, el contenido de hueso de la canal del conejo de monte es moderado.With the aim to characterise the carcass bone content of the wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus algirus) obtained from hunting, 53 specimens (unskinned, eviscerated rabbits) bought in markets of Seville (Spain) were analysed. The specimens weighed 767.8 g. T he reference carcass, obtained by flaying the specimens, weighed 551.2 g, and after carrying out the technological division accord ing the method proposed by the World Rabbit Science Association, 14.3% of fore leg, 38.0% of hind part, 32.1% of loin, and 11.4% of tho ra- cic cage were obtained. Bone percentage was 16.3% in the fore leg, 13.4% in the hind part, 9.4% in the loin, 22.5% in the thora cic ca- ge, and 13.0 in the reference carcass. Bone percentage of the hind leg gave a reliable prediction of the bone percentage of the carcass, because R 2 =0,737 (p<0,001) was achieved. No sexual dimorphism was found for the bone content, nor correlation between carcass weight and bone content of the carcass of the wild rabbit.     A low-pass filter with automatic frequency tuning for a bluetooth receiver

    A third-order Gm-C Chebyshev low-pass filter with high linearity and automatic frequency programmability has been designed. The filter is intended to be used as a channel-select filter for a zero-IF Bluetooth receiver. The frequency tuning scheme is simpler and has more relaxed specifications than conventional ones. The filter bandwidth is 0.5 MHz and the overall scheme dissipates 1.1 mA from a 1.8-V supply.     Accelerated aging in ultrathin films of a molecular glass former

    We report the thermodynamic measurement of the enthalpy released during the aging of supported films of a molecular glass former, toluene, at temperatures well below the glass transition temperature. By using microfabricated devices with very short equilibration times (below 1 s), we evidence a remarkable variation of the relaxation rate on decreasing film thickness from 100 nm down to a 7 nm thick film. Our results demonstrate that surface atoms are more efficient than bulk atoms in attaining low energy configurations within the potential energy landscape
