UMD-valued square functions associated with Bessel operators in Hardy and BMO spaces

We consider Banach valued Hardy and BMO spaces in the Bessel setting. Square functions associated with Poisson semigroups for Bessel operators are defined by using fractional derivatives. If B is a UMD Banach space we obtain for B-valued Hardy and BMO spaces equivalent norms involving γ\gamma-radonifying operators and square functions. We also establish characterizations of UMD Banach spaces by using Hardy and BMO-boundedness properties of g-functions associated to Bessel-Poisson semigroup

UMD Banach spaces and square functions associated with heat semigroups for Schr\"odinger and Laguerre operators

In this paper we define square functions (also called Littlewood-Paley-Stein functions) associated with heat semigroups for Schr\"odinger and Laguerre operators acting on functions which take values in UMD Banach spaces. We extend classical (scalar) L^p-boundedness properties for the square functions to our Banach valued setting by using \gamma-radonifying operators. We also prove that these L^p-boundedness properties of the square functions actually characterize the Banach spaces having the UMD property

Background The Central Extremadura batholith located in the southeast part of the Central Iberian Zone (e.g. Iberian Autochthonous domain of the Iberian Variscan belt) was originally thought to have been generated entirely during Carboniferous igneous activity. However, some recent geochronological work has shown the existence of Ordovician plutonic rocks. Purpose The aim of this study is to re-examine the age of granitic rocks in the Central Extremadura batholith and complement this information with new field and geochemical data. This data set is used: to constrain the relative timing of plutons emplacement, as well as deformation and metamorphism preserved in the host rocks; to track deep crustal rocks and granitic magma sources; and to discuss prevailing tectonic evolutionary models for the Paleozoic evolution of the Iberian Variscan belt. Methods We use geochemical and SHRIMP U-Pb zircon geochronology data of three granitic plutons (Ruanes, Plasenzuela and Albalá) from the Central Extremadura batholith to track magmatic sources and provide a better understanding of temporal and spatial relationships between deformation and magmatism in the Iberian Variscan belt. Results Ruanes tonalite dated at 464 ± 2 Ma is peraluminous, magnesian and calc-alkaline, as typical of a magmatic arc setting. We report, for the first time, the occurrence of a Middle Ordovician intrusion spatially and temporally related to host deformed rocks of the Central Iberian Zone (e.g. the Iberian Autochthonous domain), which reached high-grade metamorphic conditions. Plasenzuela two-mica leucogranite is strongly peraluminous and of anatectic origin and includes a Neoproterozoic and Ordovician population of inherited zircon grains. This granite possibly derived from the partial melting of a crustal source composed of Neoproterozoic metapelites and metagreywackes (Schist-Greywacke Complex) and/or Lower Ordovician gneisses (Ollo de Sapo Formation), both including greywackes of volcano-sedimentary origin and peraluminous composition. The crystallization age of 330 ± 7 Ma obtained for the syn-kinematic Plasenzuela two-mica leucogranite constrains the functioning of D2 dextral strike-slip shear zones within the Iberian Autochthonous domain. The age of 309 ± 2 Ma obtained for the Albalá cordierite-bearing monzogranite matches the age interval of the calc-alkaline magmatic suite post-dating the main Variscan D1–D3 structures in the Iberian Autochthonous domain. Conclusion The new data presented in this study make it possible to recognize multiple Paleozoic magmatic-orogenic events (e.g. Caledonian, Variscan and Cimmerian) in the Central Extremadura batholith. During the Ordovician, the emplacement of intermediate magmas at shallow depths gave rise to extensive metamorphism due to heat transfer to the host rocks. The onset of this Ordovician plutonic–metamorphic complex in the Iberian Autochthonous domain is contemporaneous with the development of an active continental margin probably related to the subduction of the Iapetus–Tornquist Ocean (i.e. the Caledonian orogeny). During the Lower Carboniferous, these D2 strike-slip domains acted as lateral margins of largescale gravitational collapses associated with the SE-direct transport of low-angle extensional shear zones (i.e. the Variscan cycle). The emplacement of Upper Carboniferous arc type granitic rocks is interpreted in the context of the amalgamation of Pangaea and the spatial proximity of Iberia relative to the Eurasian active margin in the course of Paleotethys subduction (i.e. the Cimmerian orogeny)

We have prepared LiCo1−yAlyO2 and LiNi0.5−yAlyCo0.5O2 (0≤y≤0.3) powder samples by a low temperature sol–gel method using succinic acid as chelating agent. We have studied the details of their crystallographic and local structure by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and FTIR spectroscopy, respectively; we have analyzed their chemical composition by ICP and obtained information about the morphology of the polycrystalline particles by SEM. Also, we have studied the electrochemical performance of the as-prepared materials in the LiLiNi0.5−yAlyCo0.5O2 cells cycled in the potential range 2.5–4.2 V finding that the overall capacity of the oxides has been reduced due to the metal substitution. For example, at 4.2 V cut-off, the charge capacity of the LiLiNi0.35Al0.15Co0.5O2 cell is ca. 115 mA h/g. However, more stable charge–discharge cycling performances have been obtained as compared to those displayed by the native oxides. Finally, we have characterized the kinetics of Li-diffusion by the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique and, according to our results, Al substitution provides an increase in the chemical diffusion coefficients of Li ions in the LiNi0.5−yAlyCo0.5O2 matrix.Spanish and French Foreing Office; PAI Picasso 00717TCSpanish and French Foreing Office; HF 1999-010

In the field of canine rehabilitation, knowledge of muscle function in the therapeutic exercises prescribed is needed by physical therapists and veterinary surgeons. To gain insight into the function of longissimus dorsi (LD) and gluteus medius (GM) muscles in dogs, five Greyhounds performing leash walking and trotting on the ground flat, up (+7%), and downhill (−7%) were studied by surface electromyography, and the mean and maximum activity was compared. For the same incline, the surface electromyography (sEMG) of LD was higher (p < 0.05) at the trot than at the walk. In LD muscle, trotting uphill showed significantly higher maximum activity than any other exercise. A change of +7% incline or −7% decline affected (increased or decreased, respectively) the mean sEMG of the LD and GM muscles of dogs walking or trotting on the ground. When combined, the influence of gait and incline on electromyographic activity was analyzed, and walking at certain inclines showed no difference with trotting at certain inclines. Walking and trotting up and downhill added separate therapeutic value to flat motion. The results of the present study might contribute to a better understanding of the function of LD and GM muscles in dogs, this being especially useful for the field of canine rehabilitation

Objectives To investigate a possible relationship between altered nasal flow and chronic otitis media (COM) using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Study Design Retrospective case series. Methods Retrospective cohort sample of CT scans from patients with COM and controls without COM to compare the results of various nasal airflow parameters determined by CFD between a group of patients with COM (N = 60) and a control group of subjects without any evidence of ear disease (N = 81). The CT were subjected to various procedures to carry out CFD studies, determining the resistance to nasal flow, the proportion of flow through the right and left nasal cavity, and two nondimensional estimators. The results of CFD studies between patients with COM and controls were compared. Results Whereas only 12.3% of the controls had CFD alteration (10 out of 81), 43.3% of the patients suffering COM displayed alterations of our nondimensional parameters urn:x-wiley:0023852X:media:lary29882:lary29882-math-0001 (26 out of 60). Conclusions According to our results, the incidence of alterations in nasal airflow by studying with CFD is significantly higher in patients with COM than in controls. To our knowledge, this is the first article linking nasal cavity and COM using a CFD approach. Our results support the hypothesis that nasal flow alterations could be implicated in the etiopathogenesis of the COM

AbstractCurrent evidence supports the notion that exposure to various environmental conditions in early life may induce permanent changes in the epigenome that persist throughout the life-course. This article focuses on early changes associated with obesity in adult life. A review is presented on the factors that induce changes in whole genome (DNA) methylation in early life that are associated with adult onset obesity and related disorders. In contrast, reversal of epigenetic changes associated with weight loss in obese subjects has not been demonstrated. This contrasts with well-established associations found between obesity related DNA methylation patterns at birth and adult onset obesity and diabetes. Epigenetic markers may serve to screen indivuals at risk for obesity and assess the effects of interventions in early life that may delay or prevent obesity in early life. This might contribute to lower the obesity-related burden of death and disability at the population level. The available evidence indicates that epigenetic marks are in fact modifiable, based on modifications in the intrauterine environment and changes in food intake, physical activity and dietary patterns patterns during pregnancy and early years of adult life. This offers the opportunity to intervene before conception, during pregnancy, infancy, childhood, and also in later life. There must be documentation on the best preventive actions in terms of diet and physical activity that will modify or revert the adverse epigenetic markers, thus preventing obesity and diabetes in suceptible individuals and populations

Implementation of routine thromboplastin-plasma cell block technique in the evaluation of non-gynecologic specimens: A methodologic comparison with conventional cytology

AbstractThe cell block is an ancillary technique used in cytology to increase the diagnostic accuracy in the analysis of effusions and aspirations. In our laboratory, we implemented the routine use of the Thromboplastin-Plasma Cell-Block (TP-CB) technique because it is simple, reproducible and has low cost. The aim of this prospective study was to proof the utility of performing routine cell blocks in non-gynecologic cytology by comparing the diagnostic concordance, cellularity, and contribution to diagnosis from paired TP-CB and Conventional Cytological (CC) preparations. For this, all non-gynecologic specimens including effusions, body fluids and aspirations, were collected for an 8-month period. A total of 179 TP-CBs were prepared from the remaining fluid following CC preparations. Absolute concordance was found in 81.6% cases between both techniques (κ=0.56). The cell block aided the diagnosis in 28% of cases and ICC studies were done in 12%. The use of routine TP-CB complements and enhances the diagnostic accuracy of CC, allows the performance of ancillary studies and improves the diagnostic approach and treatment
