    No full text
This work presents the first examples of carboranylcarboxylate complexes as precatalysts in epoxidation reactions with the use of peracetic acid as the oxidant. The manganese [Mn(μ-H2O)(1-CH3-2-CO2-1,2-closo-C2B10H10)2]n·(H2O)n (1), [Mn2(1-CH3-2-CO2-1,2-closo-C2B10H10)4(2,2'-bpy)2] (2, bpy = bipyridine), [Mn(1-CH3-2-CO2-1,2-closo-C2B10H10)2(bpm)]n (3, bpm = bipyrimidine), and [Mn(1-CH3-2-CO2-1,2-closo-C2B10H10)2(2,2'-bpy)2] (4) complexes and the cobalt [Co2(μ-H2O)(1-CH3-2-CO2-1,2-closo-C2B10H10)4(thf)4] (6) complex, all containing the carboranylcarboxylic 1-CH3-2-CO2H-1,2-closo-C2B10H10 (LH) ligand, together with Mn3(OAc)6(2,2'-bpy)2 (5) displayed good performance with high conversions and selectivity values in short reaction times, in most cases. This work highlights that the coordination of the carboranylcarboxylic ligand to the metal ions is crucial to the performance of the complexes as catalystsThis research has been financed by the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (CTQ2015-66143-P; CTQ2016-75150-R) and Generalitat de Catalunya through project 2014-SGR-14

We describe the synthesis of new manganese(II) and manganese(III) complexes containing the bidentate ligands 2-(3-pyrazolyl)pyridine, pypz-H, and 3(5)-(2-hydroxyphenyl)pyrazole, HOphpz-H, with formula [MnX2(pypz-H)2] (X = Cl−, 1, CF3SO3−, 2, OAc−, 3 or NO3− (4)), [MnCl2(pypz-H)(H2O)2], 5, or [MnCl- (Ophpz-H)2], 6. All the complexes have been characterized through analytical, spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques. Single X-ray structure analysis revealed a six-coordinated Mn(II) ion in complexes 15, and a five-coordinated Mn(III) ion in complex 6. Compound 5 is the first co-crystal of Mn(II) containing Cl and H2O ligands together with bidentate nitrogen ligands. The catalytic activity of complexes 16 has been tested with regard to the epoxidation of styrene and, in the case of 1, 5 and 6, other alkenes have been epoxidized using peracetic acid as oxidant in different media, among which glycerol, a green solvent never used in epoxidation reactions using peracetic acid as oxidant. The catalysts show moderate to high conversions and selectivities towards the corresponding epoxides. For complexes 1, 5 and 6, a certain degree of cis → trans isomerization is observed in the case of cis-β-methylstyrene. These observations have been explained through computational calculations. The reutilization of catalysts 1 and 6 for the epoxidation of alkenes has been evaluated in [bmim] : acetonitrile mixture (bmim = 1-butyl- 3-methylimidazolium), allowing the effective recyclability of the catalytic system and keeping high conversion and selectivity values up to 12 successive runs, in all casesThis research has been financed by MINECO of Spain through projects, CTQ2010-21532-C02-01 and CTQ2014-54306-P. Carving 1D CoII-carboranylcarboxylate system by organic solvents creating stable trinuclear molecular analogous: complete structural and magnetic studies

    No full text
This work presents a straightforward methodology to achieve small linear trinuclear molecules based on the CoII-carboranylcarboxylate system obtained by carving a 1D polynuclear analogous system with the use of diethylether. The reaction of the carboranylcarboxylic ligand, 1-CH3-2-CO2H-1,2-closo-C2B10H10 (LH) with different cobalt salts leads to the polynuclear compound [Co2(μ-H2O)(1-CH3-2-CO2-1,2-closo- C2B10H10)4(THF)4], 1 and the polymeric [Co(μ-H2O)(1-CH3-2-CO2-1,2-closo-C2B10H10)2]n(H2O)n 2. This latter 1D chain has been obtained by an unprecedented synthetic strategy for the isolation of cobalt(II) compounds.[Co3(μ-H2O)2(1-CH3-2-CO2-1,2-closo-C2B10H10)6(H2O)2(C4H10O)2], 3 is formed by the dissociation of the polymeric structure that forms 2 when a mild coordinating solvent such as diethylether is added. These compounds have been characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques. X-ray analysis of 1 and 3 revealed that 1 presents a dinuclear structure whereas 3 is trinuclear; in both cases a six-coordinated CoII compound with water molecules bridging each of the two CoII centres has been observed. The magnetic properties of 1 and 3 show a weak antiferromagnetic behaviour, respectively, between the CoII centres mediated by two carboxylate ligands and a molecule of wate

A family of manganese complexes containing heterocyclic-based ligands with cytotoxic properties

    No full text
We describe the synthesis of three new manganese (II) complexes containing the bidentate ligands 2-(1-methyl-3-pyrazolyl)pyridine (pypz-Me) and ethyl 2-(3-(pyridine-2-yl)-1H–pyrazol-1-yl)acetate (pypz-CH2COOEt), with formula [MnX2(pypz-Me)2] (X = Cl−1, CF3SO3−2) and [Mn(CF3SO3)2(pypz-CH2COOEt)2] 3. Complexes 1–3 have been characterized through analytical, spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques, as well as by monocrystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The complexes show a six-coordinated Mn(II) ion though different stereoisomers have been isolated for the three compounds. Complexes 1–3, together with the previously described compounds [MnCl2(pypz-H)2] 4, [Mn(CF3SO3)2(pypz-H)2] 5, [Mn(NO3)2(pypz-H)2] 6, [MnCl2(H2O)2(pypz-H)2] 7 (pypz-H = 2-(3-pyrazolyl)pyridine) and ([Mn(CF3SO3)2((−)-L)2] 8, ((−)-L = (−)-pinene[5,6]bipyridine), were tested in vitro for cytotoxic activity against NCI-H460 and OVCAR-8 cancer cell lines. The geometry of a specific compound does not seem to influence its activity in a significant extent. However, among the tested compounds those that display hydrophobic substituents on the pyrazole ring and triflate ions as labile ligands show the best antiproliferative properties. Specifically, compound 8 containing the pinene-bipyridine ligand presents an antiproliferative activity similar to that of cisplatin and higher than that of carboplatin, and displays selectivity for tumour cells. Its antiproliferative effect is due to the generation of ROS species that allow the compound to interact with DNAThis research has been financed by Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad (MINECO) Spain, through projects CTQ2015-66143-P and BIO2013-43517, by Universitat de Girona through projects MPCUdG2016-18 and MPCUdG2016/048 and by DGU, Generalitat de Catalunya through projects SGR2014-70 and SGR2014-14
