    Safeguard plan management for heritage buildings: development of a spatial information system

    This paper explains the methodology and criteria used in the development of a new tool for the management of a safeguard plan for historic buildings in Avila, which is a Spanish World Heritage City. As a result of a first approximation, there are many requirements to take into account: completeness, interactivity, ease of use, modularity, and low costs. Due to the characteristics of the information (spatially located, heterogenic, and provided in different formats) we consider it indispensable to create a spatial information system that is qualifiedfor organizing all available multimedia digital information (2-D images, panoramas, graphics, text documents, and music). While the mainobjective of this study is to provide a simple tool for the management of historic and artistic heritage in the form of a safeguard plan, the features of the tool created here open up new possibilities for other uses in the future

    An IBC solar cell for the UPC CubeSat-1 mission

    In this work the fabrication and electrical characterization of interdigitated back contact IBC solar cells is shown. These solar cells have been specifically designed for a CubeSat based satellite under developement at the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC). Solar cells incorporate a transparent cover-glass as an extraterrestrial radiation shield. Front surface passivation was achieved using an Al2O3 layer exhibiting surface recombination velocities <; 100 cmls at the final device. Measurements confirm photovoltaic efficiencies η's-12%, with open circuit voltages Voc's ~650 m V and short circuit current densities Jsc's ~25 mA/cm2. A module with 11 IBC solar cells interconnected in series will be integrated in one of the faces of the satellite forming part of the power subsystem. Preliminary results confirm the good electrical performance of the module.Peer Reviewe

    Deep Convolutional Neural Support Vector Machines for the Classification of Basal Cell Carcinoma Hyperspectral Signatures

    Non-melanoma skin cancer, and basal cell carcinoma in particular, is one of the most common types of cancer. Although this type of malignancy has lower metastatic rates than other types of skin cancer, its locally destructive nature and the advantages of its timely treatment make early detection vital. The combination of multispectral imaging and artificial intelligence has arisen as a powerful tool for the detection and classification of skin cancer in a non-invasive manner. The present study uses hyperspectral images to discern between healthy and basal cell carcinoma hyperspectral signatures. Upon the combined use of convolutional neural networks, with a final support vector machine activation layer, the present study reaches up to 90% accuracy, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve being calculated at 0.9 as well. While the results are promising, future research should build upon a dataset with a larger number of patients

    RGB-D Sensors Data Quality Assessment and Improvement for Advanced Applications

    Since the advent of the first Kinect as a motion control device for the Microsoft XBOX platform (November 2010), several similar active and low-cost range sensing devices, capable of capturing a digital RGB image and the corresponding depth map (RGBD), have been introduced in the market. Although initially designed for the video gaming market with the scope of capturing an approximated 3D image of a human body in order to create gesture-based interfaces, RGBD sensors’ low cost and their ability to gather streams of 3D data in real-time with a frame rate of 15 to 30 fps, boosted their popularity for several other purposes, including 3D multimedia interaction, robot navigation, 3D body scanning for garment design and proximity sensors for automotive design. However, data quality is not the RGBD sensors’ strong point, and additional considerations are needed for maximizing the amount of information that can be extracted by the raw data, together with proper criteria for data validation and verification. The present chapter provides an overview of RGBD sensors technology and an analysis of how random and systematic 3D measurement errors affect the global 3D data quality in the various technological implementations. Typical applications are also reported, with the aim of providing readers with the basic knowledge and understanding of the potentialities and challenges of this technology
