USING MIXED-INTEGER PROGRAMMING TO DETERMINE THE POTENTIAL FOR FLOUR-MILLING INDUSTRY EXPANSION
As in most predominantly agricultural states, agricultural producers in Oklahoma have expressed an interest in value-added processing opportunities. While Oklahoma produces mostly hard red winter wheat, most Oklahoma bakers require predominantly soft wheat flour for their products, almost all of which is purchased from out-of-state suppliers. An economic engineering-based, mixed-integer programming model was used to determine the optimal number, size, and location of additional flour mills in Oklahoma to capture this excess flour demand. The results suggest that additional mills are potentially justified and that the potential for additional milling will increase if Oklahoma soft wheat production increases.Agribusiness,

Updating State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plans, an Application of Geographic Information Systems and Census Data
Abstract
Modeling supply and demand data is useful for regional outdoor recreation planning. At the statewide level, State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plans (SCORPs) are prepared to satisfy the requirements of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). In Massachusetts, the most recent SCORP was prepared in 2006. Two of the primary tasks were updating the recreation resource inventory statewide and developing an extensive GIS data base. For the demand side, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts utilized data collected in 1995 that focused on recreation site usage patterns, assessed satisfaction with outdoor recreation areas, and evaluated unmet needs. This paper presents an example of updating SCORPs using current demographic data (US Census) and geographic supply data (MassGIS)
FEASIBILITY OF AN OKLAHOMA FRESH GREENS AND COWPEAS PACKING COOPERATIVE
Oklahoma's green producers are not benefiting from a growing fresh market. In order to seize the opportunities offered by the growing fresh market for leafy greens, investment in packing facilities have been evaluated. To make use of these facilities during summer months, the addition of a cowpea shelling enterprise is considered. A business plan for a new generation cooperative is estimated using an updated version of "The Packing Simulation Model" (PACKSIM) The business associates PACKSIM with @RISK®, to incorporate risks in the financial analysis.Agribusiness,
Entangled single-wire NiTi material: a porous metal with tunable superelastic and shape memory properties
NiTi porous materials with unprecedented superelasticity and shape memory
were manufactured by self-entangling, compacting and heat treating NiTi wires.
The versatile processing route used here allows to produce entanglements of
either superelastic or ferroelastic wires with tunable mesostructures. Three
dimensional (3D) X-ray microtomography shows that the entanglement
mesostructure is homogeneous and isotropic. The thermomechanical compressive
behavior of the entanglements was studied using optical measurements of the
local strain field. At all relative densities investigated here ( 25 -
40), entanglements with superelastic wires exhibit remarkable macroscale
superelasticity, even after compressions up to 25, large damping capacity,
discrete memory effect and weak strain-rate and temperature dependencies.
Entanglements with ferroelastic wires resemble standard elastoplastic fibrous
systems with pronounced residual strain after unloading. However, a full
recovery is obtained by heating the samples, demonstrating a large shape memory
effect at least up to 16% strain.Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Acta Materiali
A Search for Variable Stars and Planetary Occultations in NGC2301 I: Techniques
We observed the young open cluster NGC 2301 for 14 nights in Feb. 2004 using
the orthogonal transfer CCD camera (OPTIC). We used PSF shaping techniques
("square stars") during the observations allowing a larger dynamic range (4.5
magnitudes) of high photometric precision results (2 mmag) to be obtained.
These results are better than similar observing campaigns using standard CCD
imagers. This paper discusses our observational techniques and presents initial
results for the variability statistics found in NGC 2301. Details of the
variability statistics as functions of color, variability type, stellar type,
and cluster location will appear in paper II
PROPERTIES OF ACATALASIC CELLS GROWING IN VITRO
Acatalasia, a disease due to homozygosity for a Mendelian gene, is characterized by the absence of the enzyme catalase from the tissues of the human body. Red cells from heterozygotes have enzyme activities about one-half normal. In this paper, the development of cell lines from skin biopsies on an affected homozygote, a heterozygote, and eight control patients is described. The cell type is the euploid "fibroblast." It was found that acatalasic cells lacked the enzyme, even after growing for many months in a medium rich in catalase. The control lines all had mean catalase activities double or more that of the heterozygous line. Selection experiments, in which the growth of cells exposed for 20 minutes to varying concentrations of hydrogen peroxide was measured, did not provide a system for preferentially eliminating acatalasic cells. Certain other experiments bearing on the enzymatic defect in this disease were performed
Structure and Strength of Dislocation Junctions: An Atomic Level Analysis
The quasicontinuum method is used to simulate three-dimensional
Lomer-Cottrell junctions both in the absence and in the presence of an applied
stress. The simulations show that this type of junction is destroyed by an
unzipping mechanism in which the dislocations that form the junction are
gradually pulled apart along the junction segment. The calculated critical
stress needed for breaking the junction is comparable to that predicted by line
tension models. The simulations also demonstrate a strong influence of the
initial dislocation line directions on the breaking mechanism, an effect that
is neglected in the macroscopic treatment of the hardening effect of junctions.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
The story of supernova 'Refsdal' told by MUSE
We present MUSE observations in the core of the HFF galaxy cluster MACS
J1149.5+2223, where the first magnified and spatially-resolved multiple images
of SN 'Refsdal' at redshift 1.489 were detected. Thanks to a DDT program with
the VLT and the extraordinary efficiency of MUSE, we measure 117 secure
redshifts with just 4.8 hours of total integration time on a single target
pointing. We spectroscopically confirm 68 galaxy cluster members, with redshift
values ranging from 0.5272 to 0.5660, and 18 multiple images belonging to 7
background, lensed sources distributed in redshifts between 1.240 and 3.703.
Starting from the combination of our catalog with those obtained from extensive
spectroscopic and photometric campaigns using the HST, we select a sample of
300 (164 spectroscopic and 136 photometric) cluster members, within
approximately 500 kpc from the BCG, and a set of 88 reliable multiple images
associated to 10 different background source galaxies and 18 distinct knots in
the spiral galaxy hosting SN 'Refsdal'. We exploit this valuable information to
build 6 detailed strong lensing models, the best of which reproduces the
observed positions of the multiple images with a rms offset of only 0.26". We
use these models to quantify the statistical and systematic errors on the
predicted values of magnification and time delay of the next emerging image of
SN 'Refsdal'. We find that its peak luminosity should should occur between
March and June 2016, and should be approximately 20% fainter than the dimmest
(S4) of the previously detected images but above the detection limit of the
planned HST/WFC3 follow-up. We present our two-dimensional reconstruction of
the cluster mass density distribution and of the SN 'Refsdal' host galaxy
surface brightness distribution. We outline the roadmap towards even better
strong lensing models with a synergetic MUSE and HST effort.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables; accepted for publication in the
