    First Model-Independent Measurement of the Spin Triplet pΛp\Lambda Scattering Length from Final State Interaction in the pppK+Λ\vec{p}p \rightarrow pK^{+}\Lambda Reaction

    The pppK+Λ\vec{p}p \rightarrow pK^{+}\Lambda reaction has been measured with the COSY-TOF detector at a beam momentum of 2.7GeV/c2.7\,\mathrm{GeV}/c. The polarized proton beam enables the measurement of the beam analyzing power by the asymmetry of the produced kaon (ANKA_N^{K}). This observable allows the pΛp\Lambda spin triplet scattering length to be extracted for the first time model independently from the final-state interaction in the reaction. The obtained value is at=(2.551.39+0.72stat.±0.6syst.±0.3theo.)fma_{t} = (-2.55 ^{+0.72}_{-1.39} {}_{\textrm{stat.}} \pm 0.6_{\textrm{syst.}} \pm 0.3_{\textrm{theo.}})\mathrm{fm}. This value is compatible with theoretical predictions and results from model-dependent analyses.Comment: Revised version as accepted for publication in PR

    Osteopontin is a prognostic circulating biomarker in patients with neuroendocrine neoplasms

    PURPOSE: Osteopontin (OPN), also called secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1) is a matricellular glycoprotein whose expression is elevated in various types of cancer and which has been shown to be involved in tumorigenesis and metastasis in many malignancies. Its role in neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) remains to be established. The aim of the study was to analyze plasma concentrations of OPN in patients with NEN and to explore its diagnostic and prognostic value as a clinical biomarker. METHODS: OPN plasma concentrations were measured in a total of 38 patients with histologically proven NEN at three different time points during the course of disease and therapy (at the start of the study, after 3 and 12 months, respectively) as well as in healthy controls. Clinical and imaging data as well as concentrations of Chromogranin A (CgA) and Neuron Specific Enolase (NSE) were assessed. RESULTS: OPN levels were significantly higher in patients with NEN compared to healthy controls. High-grade tumors (grade 3) showed the highest OPN levels. OPN levels were neither different between male and female patients nor between different primary tumor sites. OPN correlated significantly with corresponding NSE levels, while there was no correlation with Chromogranin A. High OPN levels above a cutoff value of 200 ng/ml at initial analysis predicted a worsened prognosis with significantly shorter progression-free survival of patients with NEN, which also held true within the subgroup of well-differentiated G1/G2 tumors. CONCLUSION: Our data indicate that high baseline OPN levels in patients with NEN are predictive of an adverse outcome with shorter progression-free survival, even within the group of well differentiated G1/G2 tumors. Therefore, OPN may be used as a surrogate prognostic biomarker in patients with NEN

    Single \pi^- production in np collisions for excess energies up to 90 MeV

    The quasifree reaction np\to pp\pim was studied in a kinematically complete experiment by bombarding a liquid hydrogen target with a deuteron beam of momentum 1.85 GeV/c and analyzing the data along the lines of the spectator model. In addition to the three charged ejectiles the spectator proton was also detected in the large-acceptance time-of-flight spectrometer COSY-TOF. It was identified by its momentum and flight direction thus yielding access to the Fermi motion of the bound neutron and to the effective neutron 4-momentum vector Pn\mathbb{P}_n which differed from event to event. A range of almost 90 MeV excess energy above threshold was covered. Energy dependent angular distributions, invariant mass spectra as well as fully covered Dalitz plots were deduced. Sizeable pppp FSI effects were found as were contributions of pp and dd partial waves. The behavior of the elementary cross section σ01\sigma_{01} close to threshold is discussed in view of new cross section data. In comparison with existing literature data the results provide a sensitive test of the spectator model.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJ

    A method to disentangle single- and multi-meson production in missing mass spectra from quasi-free pn --> pn X reactions

    The separation of contributions from multi- and single-meson production in the missing mass spectrum of the quasi-free pn --> pnX reaction constitutes a~challenging task when the reaction is studied close to threshold. This is especially true if the resolution of the mass determination is comparable with the excess energy and if the investigated signal appears close to the kinematical limit. In this article we outline a method which permits the extraction of the signal originating from the creation of a single meson without the necessity of conducting model-dependent simulations. For the pd --> pnXp(spectator) reactions, the method allows one to combine events corresponding to multi-meson production at various excess energies with respect to the pn --> pn meson process, and hence leads to an increase of the statistics needed for the determination of the shape of the multi-meson background. As an example of the application of the method, we demonstrate that the evaluation of the data from the pd --> pnXp(sp) process according to the described technique enables one to extract a signal of the pn --> pn eta reaction whose shape is consistent with expectations, supporting the correctness and usefulness of the method introduced.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figure

    Measurement of the Eta Production in Proton Proton Collisions with the COSY Time of Flight Spectrometer

    The reaction pp -> pp eta was measured at excess energies of 15 and 41 MeV at an external target of the Juelich Cooler Synchrotron COSY with the Time of Flight Spectrometer. About 25000 events were measured for the excess energy of 15 MeV and about 8000 for 41 MeV. Both protons of the process pp eta were detected with an acceptance of nearly 100% and the eta was reconstructed by the missing mass technique. For both excess energies the angular distributions are found to be nearly isotropic. In the invariant mass distributions strong deviations from the pure phase space distributions are seen.Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, 4 table

    Comparison of Isoscalar Vector Meson Production Cross Sections in Proton-Proton Collisions

    The reaction ppppω pp\to pp\bf \omega was investigated with the TOF spectrometer, which is an external experiment at the accelerator COSY (Forschungszentrum J\"ulich, Germany). Total as well as differential cross sections were determined at an excess energy of 93MeV93 MeV (pbeam=2950MeV/cp_{beam}=2950 MeV/c). Using the total cross section of (9.0±0.7±1.1)μb(9.0\pm 0.7 \pm1.1) \mu b for the reaction ppppω pp\to pp\omega determined here and existing data for the reaction ppppϕpp\to pp\bf \phi, the ratio Rϕ/ω=σϕ/σω\mathcal{R}_{\phi/\omega}=\sigma_\phi/\sigma_\omega turns out to be significantly larger than expected by the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka (OZI) rule. The uncertainty of this ratio is considerably smaller than in previous determinations. The differential distributions show that the ω\omega production is still dominated by S-wave production at this excess energy, however higher partial waves clearly contribute. A comparison of the measured angular distributions for ω\omega production to published distributions for ϕ\phi production at 83MeV83 MeV shows that the data are consistent with an identical production mechanism for both vector mesons

    On the SigmaN cusp in the pp -> pK+Lambda reaction

    Measurements of the pppK+Λpp \to pK^+\Lambda reaction at TpT_p = 2.28 GeV have been carried out at COSY-TOF. In addition to the Λp\Lambda p FSI and NN^* resonance excitation effects a pronounced narrow structure is observed in the Dalitz plot and in its projection on the pΛp\Lambda-invariant mass. The structure appears at the pppp \to NK+ΣK^+\Sigma threshold and is interpreted as Σ\SigmaN cusp effect. The observed width of 20 MeV/c2c^2 is substantially broader than anticipated from previous inclusive measurements. Angular distributions of this cusp structure are shown to be dissimilar to those in the residual pK+ΛpK^+\Lambda channel, but similar to those observed in the pK+Σ0pK^+\Sigma^0 channel
