The Nuclear Starburst in NGC 253
We have obtained long-slit spectra of NGC 253 in the J, H, K, and N bands,
broadband images in the J, H, and Ks bands, narrowband images centered at the
wavelengths of BrGamma and H2(1,0)S(1), and imaging spectroscopy centered on
[NeII](12.8um). We use these data and data from the literature in a
comprehensive re-assessment of the starburst in this galaxy. We derive the
supernova rate from the strength of the infrared [FeII] lines. We find that
most of the H2 infrared luminosity is excited by fluorescence in low density
gas. We derive a strong upper limit of ~37,000K for the stars exciting the
emission lines. We use velocity-resolved infrared spectra to determine the mass
in the starburst region. Most of this mass appears to be locked up in the old,
pre-existing stellar population. Using these constraints and others to build an
evolutionary synthesis model, we find that the IMF originally derived to fit
the starburst in M 82 (similar to a Salpeter IMF) also accounts for the
properties of NGC 253. The models indicate that rapid massive star formation
has been ongoing for 20-30 million years in NGC 253---that is, it is in a late
phase of its starburst. We model the optical emission line spectrum expected
from a late phase starburst and demonstrate that it reproduces the observed
HII/weak-[OI] LINER characteristics.Comment: 48 pages, 14 figures, uses AASTeX macros, to appear in Ap
Transverse momentum dependence of semi-inclusive pion production
Cross sections for semi-inclusive electroproduction of charged pions
() from both proton and deuteron targets were measured for
, GeV, , and GeV. For
GeV, we find the azimuthal dependence to be small, as expected
theoretically. For both and , the dependence from the
deuteron is found to be slightly weaker than from the proton. In the context of
a simple model, this implies that the initial transverse momenta width of
quarks is larger than for quarks and, contrary to expectations, the
transverse momentum width of the favored fragmentation function is larger than
the unfavored one.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. Fit form changed to include Cahn effect Minor

Precision Measurement of the Neutron Spin Asymmetry and Spin-Flavor Decomposition in the Valence Quark Region
We have measured the neutron spin asymmetry with high precision at
three kinematics in the deep inelastic region at , 0.47 and 0.60, and
, 3.5 and 4.8 (GeV/c), respectively. Our results unambiguously
show, for the first time, that crosses zero around and becomes
significantly positive at . Combined with the world proton data,
polarized quark distributions were extracted. Our results, in general, agree
with relativistic constituent quark models and with perturbative quantum
chromodynamics (pQCD) analyses based on the earlier data. However they deviate
from pQCD predictions based on hadron helicity conservation.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, this is the final version appeared in Phys. Rev.

Applications of quark-hadron duality in F2 structure function
Inclusive electron-proton and electron-deuteron inelastic cross sections have
been measured at Jefferson Lab (JLab) in the resonance region, at large Bjorken
x, up to 0.92, and four-momentum transfer squared Q2 up to 7.5 GeV2 in the
experiment E00-116. These measurements are used to extend to larger x and Q2
precision, quantitative, studies of the phenomenon of quark-hadron duality. Our
analysis confirms, both globally and locally, the apparent violation of
quark-hadron duality previously observed at a Q2 of 3.5 GeV2 when resonance
data are compared to structure function data created from CTEQ6M and MRST2004
parton distribution functions (PDFs). More importantly, our new data show that
this discrepancy saturates by Q2 ~ 4 Gev2, becoming Q2 independent. This
suggests only small violations of Q2 evolution by contributions from the
higher-twist terms in the resonance region which is confirmed by our
comparisons to ALEKHIN and ALLM97.We conclude that the unconstrained strength
of the CTEQ6M and MRST2004 PDFs at large x is the major source of the
disagreement between data and these parameterizations in the kinematic regime
we study and that, in view of quark-hadron duality, properly averaged resonance
region data could be used in global QCD fits to reduce PDF uncertainties at
large x.Comment: 35 page
The Onset of Quark-Hadron Duality in Pion Electroproduction
A large data set of charged-pion electroproduction from both hydrogen and
deuterium targets has been obtained spanning the low-energy residual-mass
region. These data conclusively show the onset of the quark-hadron duality
phenomenon, as predicted for high-energy hadron electroproduction. We construct
several ratios from these data to exhibit the relation of this phenomenon to
the high-energy factorization ansatz of electron-quark scattering and
subsequent quark-to- pion production mechanisms.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted in Phys. Rev. Lett. Tables adde
The reaction dynamics of the 16O(e,e'p) cross section at high missing energies
We measured the cross section and response functions (R_L, R_T, and R_LT) for
the 16O(e,e'p) reaction in quasielastic kinematics for missing energies 25 <=
E_miss <= 120 MeV at various missing momenta P_miss <= 340 MeV/c. For 25 <
E_miss < 50 MeV and P_miss \approx 60 MeV/c, the reaction is dominated by
single-nucleon knockout from the 1s1/2-state. At larger P_miss, the
single-particle aspects are increasingly masked by more complicated processes.
For E_miss > 60 MeV and P_miss > 200 MeV/c, the cross section is relatively
constant. Calculations which include contributions from pion exchange currents,
isobar currents and short-range correlations account for the shape and the
transversity but only for half of the magnitude of the measured cross section.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys Rev Lett, formatting error

Measurement of GEp/GMp in ep -> ep to Q2 = 5.6 GeV2
The ratio of the electric and magnetic form factors of the proton, GEp/GMp,
was measured at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) using
the recoil polarization technique. The ratio of the form factors is directly
proportional to the ratio of the transverse to longitudinal components of the
polarization of the recoil proton in the elastic
reaction. The new data presented in this article span the range 3.5 < Q2 < 5.6
GeV2 and are well described by a linear Q2 fit. Also, the ratio QF2p/F1p
reaches a constant value above Q2=2 GeV2.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures Added two names to the main author lis
Precision Measurement of the Neutron Spin Asymmetries and Spin-dependent Structure Functions in the Valence Quark Region
We report on measurements of the neutron spin asymmetries and
polarized structure functions at three kinematics in the deep
inelastic region, with , 0.47 and 0.60 and , 3.5 and 4.8
(GeV/c), respectively. These measurements were performed using a 5.7 GeV
longitudinally-polarized electron beam and a polarized He target. The
results for and at are consistent with previous world
data and, at the two higher points, have improved the precision of the
world data by about an order of magnitude. The new data show a zero
crossing around and the value at is significantly positive.
These results agree with a next-to-leading order QCD analysis of previous world
data. The trend of data at high agrees with constituent quark model
predictions but disagrees with that from leading-order perturbative QCD (pQCD)
assuming hadron helicity conservation. Results for and have a
precision comparable to the best world data in this kinematic region. Combined
with previous world data, the moment was evaluated and the new result
has improved the precision of this quantity by about a factor of two. When
combined with the world proton data, polarized quark distribution functions
were extracted from the new values based on the quark parton
model. While results for agree well with predictions from various
models, results for disagree with the leading-order pQCD
prediction when hadron helicity conservation is imposed.Comment: A typing error in A_\parallel(3He) at x=0.47 in Table VII of Phys.

A new measurement of the structure functions and in virtual Compton scattering at 0.33 (GeV/c)
The cross section of the reaction has been measured at
(GeV/c). The experiment was performed using the electron beam
of the MAMI accelerator and the standard detector setup of the A1
Collaboration. The cross section is analyzed using the low-energy theorem for
virtual Compton scattering, yielding a new determination of the two structure
functions P_LL}-P_{TT}/epsilon and which are linear combinations of
the generalized polarizabilities of the proton. We find somewhat larger values
than in the previous investigation at the same . This difference, however,
is purely due to our more refined analysis of the data. The results tend to
confirm the non-trivial -evolution of the generalized polarizabilities and
call for more measurements in the low- region ( 1 (GeV/c)).Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures. EPJA version. slight revisions in the text and
