The contribution of Tomas Maldonado to the scientific approach to design at the beginning of computational era THE CASE OF THE HFG OF ULM

ABSTRACT: Nowadays the use of computational design processes in architecture is a common practice which is currently recovering a set of theories connected to computer science developed in the 60`s and 70`s. Back then, such pioneering experiences were carried out by an interest in employing scientific principles and methodologies in architectural design, which, with the help of computers, were developed in Research Centres mainly located in the USA and the UK. Looking into this period, this paper investigates the relevance of the German design school of the Hochschule für Gestaltung of Ulm to the birth of computation in architecture. Even though there were no computers in the school, this paper argues that the innovative pedagogies introduced by a group of distinct professors built clear foundations that can be understood as being at the basis of further computational approaches in architecture. This paper focuses on the remarkable work done by Tomas Maldonado. His contribution was paramount in the emergence of analogical ways of computer design thinking. This analysis ultimately wants to emphasize how the HfG Ulm’s role and its scientific approach have paved the way for the onset of the computational era in architecture

Palavras-Chave: Atratividade; Perícia; Congruência; Qualidade do Produto; Crença na Cidadania Global da Marca; Vício à Marca; Marca Humana; Celebridade DesportivaCurrently, sport has become one of the main focuses of international business, where clubs or sports celebrities become brands and supporters, or fans become consumers. People are willing to pay more and more for products promoted or marketed by their favorite human brands, due to the fanaticism of these celebrities who are able to generate attraction through their expertise and congruence. Therefore, the main objective with the development of this master's thesis is to identify the value that sports celebrities have, analyzing the extreme love addiction existing in consumers towards these human brands, through factors that contribute to the success of the personal brand of the sports celebrity, which can contribute to an increase in the quality of its products and in the belief in the global citizenship of its brand. In this study, a quantitative methodological analysis was carried out, using a structured random questionnaire, having collected a sample of 231 people. Two exclusion questions were carried out, which made it possible to find the answers of respondents who identified with one of the defined human sports brands, having reduced the sample from 231 to 150 answers that served to analyze the results obtained in the scales of this survey. It was concluded with the results found that attractiveness, expertise and congruence generate a positive effect on the quality of products and on the belief in the global citizenship of the brand, which in turn, generate a positive effect on addiction to the human brand. A solution for footwear active cooling

    Get PDF
Footwear products should help the body maintain thermal balance [1, 2]. However, since footwear are relatively closed "systems", the temperature and humidity of the air trapped inside footwear can escalate over time due to sweat and heat released by the body. In this situation, user comfort is at stake and the conditions can favour the growth of bacteria and fungi. As a possible solution for this problem, a cooling solution based on enhanced convection inside footwear was studied numerically. For this purpose, a FEM-based approach [3] was used to simulate numerically the fluid flow and heat and mass transfer near the skin. This allowed the study of the effect of different parameters over the cooling potential of the envisaged solution, such as the air flow rate and the number and position of air inlets. Furthermore, it allowed the study of the temperature and relative humidity distributions along the footwear skin, as well as the analysis of the systems' energy requirements and associated weight, as a function of the characteristics of the electronics used to impose air motion and power the system. Despite evidence of sub-optimal positioning of air inlets (i.e. at the footwear front edge and at the midway between toes and ankle), which resulted in zones with negligible evaporative and dry heat cooling (see Fig. 1), interesting overall cooling potential was obtained. Further research is needed to identify the optimal characteristics of the system, e.g. air inlet positioning, air flow rates and systems operating point

H Factor Deficiency: A Case with an Atypical Presentation

We report a case of an 18-month-old boy with H factor deficiency with atypical presentation: recurrent acute otitis media and several maternal family members with autoimmune disorders (vitiligo, thyroiditis and immune trombocytopenia). Blood tests revealed low C3 and AH50, as well as low properdin and H factor. I factor was normal. CFH gene molecular test confirmed the H factor deficiency diagnosis. This child had none of the typical manifestations of this disorder, namely Neisseria meningitidis infection or renal disease (glomerulonephritis and atypical haemolytic uremic syndrome). Autoimmune family history and correct interpretation of blood tests’ results were crucial for this diagnosis
