Remarks on separating words
The separating words problem asks for the size of the smallest DFA needed to
distinguish between two words of length <= n (by accepting one and rejecting
the other). In this paper we survey what is known and unknown about the
problem, consider some variations, and prove several new results
Exact Algorithms for Maximum Independent Set
We show that the maximum independent set problem (MIS) on an -vertex graph
can be solved in time and polynomial space, which even is
faster than Robson's -time exponential-space algorithm
published in 1986. We also obtain improved algorithms for MIS in graphs with
maximum degree 6 and 7, which run in time of and
, respectively. Our algorithms are obtained by using fast
algorithms for MIS in low-degree graphs in a hierarchical way and making a
careful analyses on the structure of bounded-degree graphs

Variability of the Centimeter-Submillimeter Spectrum and Polarization of 3C 273 during Outburst
Original article can be found at: http://www.journals.uchicago.edu/ApJ/--Copyright University of Chicago Press/ AASCentimeter to submillimeter total flux and polarization monitoring data are used to investigate the nature of a prominent flare in the quasar 3C 273 during 1995/6. After removal of the quiescent level, the resulting âflare spectra" are well fitted by a simple homogeneous synchrotron source model, which in turn allows the movement of the self-absorption turnover to be tracked during the flare. Both the flare amplitude/time delay relationship and the overall spectral evolution are qualitatively consistent with existing models. The early evolution of the spectrum is best determined and is shown to be in excellent agreement with the Compton stage of the Marscher & Gear shock model. However, the polarization behavior during the flare is different at millimeter and centimeter wavelengths and the observations are difficult to reconcile with a simple transverse shock. They are, however, consistent with a conical shock for which the observed polarization properties vary with distance along the jet. Such variations may be caused, for example, by a change in cone angle owing to disruption caused by the growing component of the magnetic field parallel to the jet axis or by a moderate change in viewing angle.Peer reviewe
A historic jet-emission minimum reveals hidden spectral features in 3C 273
Aims. The aim of this work is to identify and study spectral features in the
quasar 3C 273 usually blended by its strong jet emission. Method. A historic
minimum in the sub-millimetre emission of 3C 273 triggered coordinated
multi-wavelength observations in June 2004. X-ray observations from the
INTEGRAL, XMM-Newton and RXTE satellites are complemented by ground-based
optical, infrared, millimetre and radio observations. The overall spectrum is
used to model the infrared and X-ray spectral components. Results. Three
thermal dust emission components are identified in the infrared. The dust
emission on scales from 1 pc to several kpc is comparable to that of other
quasars, as expected by AGN unification schemes. The observed weakness of the
X-ray emission supports the hypothesis of a synchrotron self-Compton origin for
the jet component. There is a clear soft-excess and we find evidence for a very
broad iron line which could be emitted in a disk around a Kerr black hole.
Other signatures of a Seyfert-like X-ray component are not detected.Comment: 4 pages. Accepted for publication in A&A Letter
