Kinematics of the Broad Line Region in M81
A new model is presented which explains the origin of the broad emission
lines observed in the LINER/Seyfert nucleus of M81 in terms of a steady state
spherically symmetric inflow, amounting to 1 x 10^-5 Msun/yr, which is
sufficient to explain the luminosity of the AGN. The emitting volume has an
outer radius of ~1 pc, making it the largest broad line region yet to be
measured, and it contains a total mass of ~ 5 x 10^-2 Msun of dense, ~ 10^8
cm^-3, ionized gas, leading to a very low filling factor of ~ 5 x 10^-9. The
fact that the BLR in M81 is so large may explain why the AGN is unable to
sustain the ionization seen there. Thus, the AGN in M81 is not simply a scaled

A survey of nearby galaxies for CO
We have made a survey of the nuclei of 81 galaxies for the 1-) line of CO. 38 of the galaxies are from a complete sample with recession velocity ≦400 km s-1 and 21-cm line strength ≧10-27 Wm-2, and the remainder represent nearby galaxies with weaker or no HI, early-type galaxies (E/SO/Sa) with detected HI and active/infrared galaxies.
Galaxies with strong CO lines like M82, NGC253 and IC342 are exceedingly rare: all the galaxies we observed are weaker than 0/2K except the irregular galaxy DDO133 with T*A=0.22K. We have new, confirmed detections of two other irregular galaxies, IC10 and Pegasus, at a weaker level, and unconfirmed detections of the irregular NGC3109 and the nearest Type I Seyfert galaxy NGC4051. We have confirmed the existence of CO in the nucleus of NGC6946 and obtained spectra of new positions in M82 and NGC253

The milliped genus Euryurus Koch, 1847 (Polydesmida: Euryuridae) west of the Mississippi River; occurrence of E. leachii (Gray, 1832) on Crowley’s Ridge, Arkansas
The milliped genus Euryurus Koch, 1847, and the species, E. leachii (Gray, 1832) (Polydesmida: Euryuridae), are recorded from three sites on the northern part of Crowley’s Ridge (Cross, Lee, and Poinsett counties), Arkansas, where the only prior familial records are of Auturus evides (Bollman, 1887). Coupled with the published locality of E. leachii in Phillips Co., at the southern extremity of the Ridge, the only known occurrences of both the genus and species in Arkansas and west of the Mississippi River are in this physiographic feature. The Arkansas population is geographically peripheral but anatomically intermediate between the two recognized subspecies, E. l. leachii and E. l. fraternus Hoffman, 1978, and we do not assign it to a race. Molecular investigations seem necessary to resolve relationships in the “E. leachii complex.
Umklapp scattering as the origin of -linear resistivity in the normal state of high- cuprate superconductors
The high-temperature normal state of the unconventional cuprate
superconductors has resistivity linear in temperature , which persists to
values well beyond the Mott-Ioffe-Regel upper bound. At low-temperature, within
the pseudogap phase, the resistivity is instead quadratic in , as would be
expected from Fermi liquid theory. Developing an understanding of these normal
phases of the cuprates is crucial to explain the unconventional
superconductivity. We present a simple explanation for this behavior, in terms
of umklapp scattering of electrons. This fits within the general picture
emerging from functional renormalization group calculations that spurred the
Yang-Rice-Zhang ansatz: umklapp scattering is at the heart of the behavior in

An Evaluation of a Battery of Functional and Structural Tests as Predictors of Likely Risk of Progression of Age-Related Macular Degeneration.
Purpose: To evaluate the ability of visual function and structural tests to identify the likely risk of progression from early/intermediate to advanced AMD, using the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) simplified scale as a surrogate for risk of progression. The secondary aim was to determine the relationship between disease severity grade and the observed functional and structural deficits. Methods: A total of 100 participants whose AMD status varied from early to advanced were recruited. Visual function was assessed using cone dark adaptation, 14 Hz flicker and chromatic threshold tests and retinal structure was assessed by measuring drusen volume and macular thickness. The predictive value of the tests was estimated using ordinal regression analysis. Group comparisons were assessed using analysis of covariance. Results: Change in cone dark adaptation (cone Ï„) and yellow-blue (YB) chromatic sensitivity were independent predictors for AMD progression risk (cone Ï„, pseudo R2 = 0.35, P < 0.001; YB chromatic threshold, pseudo R2 = 0.16, P < 0.001). The only structural predictor was foveal thickness (R2 = 0.05, P = 0.047). Chromatic sensitivity and cone dark adaptation were also the best functional tests at distinguishing between severity groups. Drusen characteristics clearly differentiated between participants with early and advanced disease, but were not able to differentiate between those with early AMD and controls. Mean differences in retinal thickness existed between severity groups at the foveal (P = 0.040) and inner (P = 0.001) subfields. Conclusions: This study indicates that cone Ï„, YB chromatic threshold and foveal thickness are independent predictors of likely risk of AMD progression
