Unraveling the exciton binding energy and the dielectric constant in single crystal methylammonium lead tri-iodide perovskite
We have accurately determined the exciton binding energy and reduced mass of
single crystals of methylammonium lead tri-iodide using magneto-reflectivity at
very high magnetic fields. The single crystal has excellent optical properties
with a narrow line width of meV for the excitonic transitions and a 2s
transition which is clearly visible even at zero magnetic field. The exciton
binding energy of meV in the low temperature orthorhombic phase is
almost identical to the value found in polycrystalline samples, crucially
ruling out any possibility that the exciton binding energy depends on the grain
size. In the room temperature tetragonal phase, an upper limit for the exciton
binding energy of meV is estimated from the evolution of 1s-2s
splitting at high magnetic field.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
The Gaia-ESO Survey: Galactic evolution of lithium at high metallicity
Context. Reconstructing the Galactic evolution of lithium (Li) is the main tool used to constrain the source(s) of Li enrichment in the Galaxy. Recent results have suggested a decline in Li at supersolar metallicities, which may indicate reduced production. Aims. We exploit the unique characteristics of the Gaia-ESO Survey open star cluster sample to further investigate this issue and to better constrain the evolution of Li at high metallicity. Methods. We trace the upper envelope of Li abundance versus metallicity evolution using 18 clusters and considering members that should not have suffered any Li depletion. Results. At variance with previous claims, we do not find any evidence of a Li decrease at high metallicity. The most metal-rich clusters in the sample ([Fe/H] = ~0.3) actually show the highest Li abundances, with A(Li) > 3.4. Our results clearly show that previous findings, which were based on field stars, were affected by selection effects. The metal-rich population in the solar neighbourhood is composed of relatively old and cool stars that have already undergone some Li depletion; hence, their measured Li does not represent the initial interstellar medium abundance, but a lower limit to it
The Gaia-ESO Survey: Dynamical analysis of the L1688 region in Ophiuchus
The Gaia ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey (GES) is providing the astronomical community with high-precision measurements of many stellar parameters including radial velocities (RVs) of stars belonging to several young clusters and star-forming regions. One of the main goals of the young cluster observations is to study their dynamical evolution and provide insight into their future, revealing whether they will eventually disperse to populate the field rather than evolve into bound open clusters. In this paper we report the analysis of the dynamical state of L1688 in the ? Ophiuchi molecular cloud using the dataset provided by the GES consortium. We performed the membership selection of the more than 300 objects observed. Using the presence of the lithium absorption and the location in the Hertzspung-Russell diagram, we identify 45 already known members and two new association members. We provide accurate RVs for all 47 confirmed members. A dynamical analysis, after accounting for unresolved binaries and errors, shows that the stellar surface population of L1688 has a velocity dispersion s ~ 1.14 ± 0.35 km s-1 that is consistent with being in virial equilibrium and is bound with a ~80% probability. We also find a velocity gradient in the stellar surface population of ~1.0 km s-1 pc-1 in the northwest-southeast direction, which is consistent with that found for the pre-stellar dense cores, and we discuss the possibility of sequential and triggered star formation in L1688
Kinetics of substrate oxidation and hydrogen peroxide production by Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides Large Colony (LC) type and Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. capri
Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides Large Colony (LC) type is a pathogen of goats causing contagious agalactia and respiratory disease, found on all continents where small ruminants are kept. It shares close genetic characteristics with M. mycoides subsp. capri. Substrate oxidation by 22 strains of M. mycoides subsp. mycoides LC from nine countries was compared with that of eight strains of M. mycoides subsp. capri from five countries. There was considerable similarity in the substrates used, but substrate saturation coefficients (Ks) varied for different substrates. Substrate utilization patterns and Ks values did not (1) significantly differentiate the LC strains from each other, (2) show any correlation with geographical origin, or (3) distinguish the LC strains from the capri strains. These results support previous studies justifying the reclassification of these subspecies as a single species
Simple Local Computation Algorithms for the General Lovasz Local Lemma
We consider the task of designing Local Computation Algorithms (LCA) for
applications of the Lov\'{a}sz Local Lemma (LLL). LCA is a class of sublinear
algorithms proposed by Rubinfeld et al.~\cite{Ronitt} that have received a lot
of attention in recent years. The LLL is an existential, sufficient condition
for a collection of sets to have non-empty intersection (in applications,
often, each set comprises all objects having a certain property). The
ground-breaking algorithm of Moser and Tardos~\cite{MT} made the LLL fully
constructive, following earlier results by Beck~\cite{beck_lll} and
Alon~\cite{alon_lll} giving algorithms under significantly stronger LLL-like
conditions. LCAs under those stronger conditions were given in~\cite{Ronitt},
where it was asked if the Moser-Tardos algorithm can be used to design LCAs
under the standard LLL condition. The main contribution of this paper is to
answer this question affirmatively. In fact, our techniques yield LCAs for
settings beyond the standard LLL condition
Variation in the Early Host-Pathogen Interaction of Bovine Macrophages with Divergent Mycobacterium bovis Strains in the United Kingdom
Publication history: Accepted - 8 December 2017; Published online - 20 December 2017.Bovine tuberculosis has been an escalating animal health issue in the
United Kingdom since the 1980s, even though control policies have been in place
for over 60 years. The importance of the genetics of the etiological agent, Mycobacterium bovis, in the reemergence of the disease has been largely overlooked. We
compared the interaction between bovine monocyte-derived macrophages (bMDM)
and two M. bovis strains, AF2122/97 and G18, representing distinct genotypes currently circulating in the United Kingdom. These M. bovis strains exhibited differences
in survival and growth in bMDM. Although uptake was similar, the number of viable
intracellular AF2122/97 organisms increased rapidly, while G18 growth was constrained for the first 24 h. AF2122/97 infection induced a greater transcriptional response by bMDM than G18 infection with respect to the number of differentially expressed genes and the fold changes measured. AF2122/97 infection induced more
bMDM cell death, with characteristics of necrosis and apoptosis, more inflammasome
activation, and a greater type I interferon response than G18. In conclusion, the two
investigated M. bovis strains interact in significantly different ways with the host
macrophage. In contrast to the relatively silent infection by G18, AF2122/97 induces
greater signaling to attract other immune cells and induces host cell death, which
may promote secondary infections of naive macrophages. These differences may affect early events in the host-pathogen interaction, including granuloma development, which could in turn alter the progression of the disease. Therefore, the potential involvement of M. bovis genotypes in the reemergence of bovine tuberculosis in
the United Kingdom warrants further investigation.Recombinant TNF and IL-10 were provided under the auspices of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) grants (BB/I019863/1 and BB/I020519/1) with the support of the Scottish Government as an Industrial Partnership Award with AbD Serotec (a Bio-Rad Company).

The Impact of Formal Strength and Conditioning on the Fitness of Law Enforcement Recruits: A Retrospective Cohort Study
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(4): 1615-1629, 2020. Research involving law enforcement populations has suggested better fitness could enhance job task performance and reduce injuries. Academy training should lead to improvements in recruit fitness. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of a strength and conditioning program on fitness among law enforcement recruits. Twenty-six recruits (23 males, three females) completed a 27-week academy, which incorporated 3-4 physical training sessions per week. Fitness assessment occurred during pre- (week 0), mid- (week 14), and post-testing (week 27) time points. The fitness assessments included: vertical jump, one-minute push-ups, one-minute sit-ups, posterior chain strength measured by a leg/back dynamometer, grip strength, and aerobic fitness measured by the 20-m multistage shuttle run (MSR). A repeated measures ANOVA with Bonferroni post hoc tests determined any significant changes in fitness between time points, with alpha set at p \u3c .05. Due to the small sample size of females, statistical analysis was only conducted on male recruits. Overall, significant main effects (p \u3c .001) were observed in all fitness assessments except for grip strength. The results detailed general improvements in fitness. However, push-up and MSR scores decreased from mid- to post-test, while sit-ups did not change. Posterior chain strength and the vertical jump improved from mid- to post-test. The data indicated that the strength and conditioning program positively influenced the fitness of recruits. An increased focus on skill-specific work in the second-half of academy may have contributed to the plateaus in muscular endurance and aerobic fitness, and improvement of lower-body strength and power
