    Numerical simulation of natural convection in a spherical container due to cooling at the center (idealization of the Lal/Kroes experiment)

    Natural convection in a spherical container with cooling at the center was numerically simulated using a numerical fluid dynamics computer program. The numerical analysis was simplified by assuming axisymmetric flow in the spherical container, with the symmetry axis being a sphere diagonal parallel to the gravity vector. This axisymmetric spherical geometry was intended as an idealization of the proposed Lal/Kroes crystal growing experiment to be performed on Spacelab. Results were obtained for a range of Rayleigh numbers from 25 to 10,000. The computed velocities were found to be approximately proportional to the Rayleigh number over the range of Rayleigh numbers investigated

    Thermal analyses of a materials processing furnace being developed for use with heat pipes

    A special materials processing furnace is being developed for the forthcoming Spacelab missions to study the solidification under closely controlled conditions of various sample materials in the absence of gravity. The samples are to be rod shaped and subjected to both heating and cooling simultaneously. The thermal model is based on a developed Thermal Analyzer computer program. The model was developed to be very general to enable the simulation of variations in the furnace design and, hence, serve as an aid in finalizing the design. The thermal model is described and a user's guide given. Some preliminary results obtained in testing the model are also given

In particular, analyses were conducted of the M551 Metals Melting Experiment and the M553 Sphere Forming Experiment to be conducted in the M512 Facility onboard Skylab. The M551 experiment consisted of a study of electron beam welding of various metals, and the M553 experiment studied the formation of molten metal spheres by free-floating in a near zero-gravity environment. The analyses of these experiments and a comparison with ground-based and KC135 experimental results are presented

    A first approach to understanding and measuring naturalness in driver-car interaction

    With technology changing the nature of the driving task, qualitative methods can help designers understand and measure driver-car interaction naturalness. Fifteen drivers were interviewed at length in their own parked cars using ethnographically-inspired questions probing issues of interaction salience, expectation, feelings, desires and meanings. Thematic analysis and content analysis found five distinct components relating to 'rich physical' aspects of natural feeling interaction typified by richer physical, analogue, tactile styles of interaction and control. Further components relate to humanlike, intelligent, assistive, socially-aware 'perceived behaviours' of the car. The advantages and challenges of a naturalness-based approach are discussed and ten cognitive component constructs of driver-car naturalness are proposed.     Probabilistic models of information retrieval based on measuring the divergence from randomness

    We introduce and create a framework for deriving probabilistic models of Information Retrieval. The models are nonparametric models of IR obtained in the language model approach. We derive term-weighting models by measuring the divergence of the actual term distribution from that obtained under a random process. Among the random processes we study the binomial distribution and Bose--Einstein statistics. We define two types of term frequency normalization for tuning term weights in the document--query matching process. The first normalization assumes that documents have the same length and measures the information gain with the observed term once it has been accepted as a good descriptor of the observed document. The second normalization is related to the document length and to other statistics. These two normalization methods are applied to the basic models in succession to obtain weighting formulae. Results show that our framework produces different nonparametric models forming baseline alternatives to the standard tf-idf model

    Vibrational entropy and microstructural effects on the thermodynamics of partially disordered and ordered Ni3V

    Samples of Ni3V were prepared with two microstructures: (1) with equilibrium D022 order, and (2) with partial disorder (having a large D022 chemical order parameter, but without the tetragonality of the unit cell). For both materials, we measured the difference in their heat capacities from 60 to 325 K, inelastic neutron-scattering spectra at four values of Q at 11 and at 300 K, and Young's moduli and coefficients of thermal expansion. The difference in heat capacity at low temperatures was consistent with a harmonic model using the phonon density of states (DOS) curves determined from the inelastic neutron-scattering spectra. In contrast, at temperatures greater than 160 K the difference in heat capacity did not approach zero, as expected of harmonic behavior. The temperature dependence of the phonon DOS can be used to approximately account for the anharmonic contributions to the differential heat capacity. We also argue that some of the anharmonic behavior should originate with a microstructural contribution to the heat capacity involving anisotropic thermal contractions of the D022 structure. We estimate the difference in vibrational entropy between partially disordered and ordered Ni3V to be Spdis -Sord =(+0.038±0.015)kB /atom at 300 K

    Aircraft control system

    An aircraft control system is described which is particularly suited to rotary wing aircraft. Longitudinal acceleration and course rate commands are derived from a manual control stick to control translational velocity of the aircraft along a flight path. In the collective channel the manual controls provide vertical velocity commands. In the yaw channel the manual controls provide sideslip or heading rate commands at high or low airspeeds, respectively. The control system permits pilots to fly along prescribed flight paths in a precise manner with relatively low work load

    Traditionally, the assessment of soil sustainability and the potential impact of cultivation are based upon the application of chemical procedures. In the absence of a biological context, these measurements offer little in understanding longterm changes in soil husbandry. Detailed microcosm investigations were applied as a predictive tool for management change. The microcosms were designed with homogenised soils treated with organic amendments. Key soil functional relationships were quantified using stable isotope techniques, biochemical measurements and traditional approaches
