    Error Aware Clifford Circuit Compilation

    We demonstrate that small quantum memories, realised via quantum error correction in multi-qubit devices and implemented using noisy Clifford circuits, can benefit significantly from tailoring the choice of code to the error model of the Cliffords gates and environment. We present a simulation of these errors and the results of searching across random quantum error correcting codes and implementing the associated Clifford encoding circuits. This modeling incorporates a better representation of the experimental complexity involved in implementing these codes and demonstrates that tailored codes can outperform the Steane code with more realistic experimental noise. Depending on the error model, they are required to surpass the fault tolerant threshold. These Pauli error models correspond to individual Clifford generators and environmental noise on the wires. We present error models which incorporate independent identically distributed (IID) errors and biased Pauli errors in the construction and optimisation of Clifford circuits associated with maintaining a quantum memory

    Collective nostalgia: a group-level emotion that confers unique benefits on the group

    This research established collective nostalgia as a group-level emotion and ascertained the benefits it confers on the group. In Study 1, participants who reflected on a nostalgic event they had experienced together with ingroup members (collective nostalgia) evaluated the ingroup more positively and reported stronger intentions to approach (and not avoid) ingroup members than those who recalled a nostalgic event they had experienced individually (personal nostalgia), those who reflected on a lucky event they had experienced together with ingroup members (collective positive), and those who did not recall an event (no recall). In Study 2, collective (vs. personal) nostalgia strengthened behavioral intentions to support the ingroup more so than did recalling an ordinary collective (vs. personal) event. Increased collective self-esteem mediated this effect. In Study 3, collective nostalgia (compared with recall of an ordinary collective event) led participants to sacrifice money in order to punish a transgression perpetrated against an ingroup member. This effect of collective nostalgia was more pronounced when social identification was high (compared with low). Finally, in Study 4, collective nostalgia converged toward the group average (i.e., was socially shared) when participants thought of themselves in terms of their group membership. The findings underscore the viability of studying nostalgia at multiple levels of analysis and highlight the significance of collective nostalgia for understanding group-level attitudes, global action tendencies, specific behavioral intentions, and behavior

    This article assesses some of the claims made for experimental research in the field of rehabilitation of offenders. It suggests that both policy officials and evaluators have tended to over-invest financially and intellectually in a technocratic model of reducing reoffending that emphasizes programmes for offenders, and to under-invest in models that see the process as a complex ‘people changing’ skill. It argues that the complexity of this process renders it hard to evaluate using experimental methods of evaluation such as randomized controlled trials (RCTs). RCTs provide strong internal validity, but in complex settings offer weak external validity, making it hard to generalize from the experimental setting to other settings. The article suggests that the proper role for evaluative research in this field should be seen as building and testing middle-level theories about how best to change offenders’ behaviour
