Various tools have been developed to help the administrator identify the IP or subnet to be blocked, however these tend to be non-visual. Having a good perception of the wider network can aid the administrator identify their origin, but while network maps of the Internet can be useful for such endeavors, they are difficult to construct, comprehend and even utilize in an attack, and are often referred to as being âhairballsâ. We present a visualization technique that displays pathways back to the attacker; we include all potential routing paths with a best-efforts identification of the commercial relationships involved. These two techniques can potentially highlight common pathways and/or networks to allow faster, more complete resolution to the incident, as well as fragile or incomplete routing pathways to/from a network. They can help administrators re-profile their choice of IP transit suppliers to better serve a target audience
For richer, for poorer: marriage and casualized sex in East African artisanal mining settlements
Migrants to Tanzania's artisanal gold mining sites seek mineral wealth, which is accompanied by high risks of occupational hazards, economic failure, AIDS and social censure from their home communities. Male miners in these settlements compete to attract newly arrived young women who are perceived to be diverting male material support from older women and children's economic survival. This article explores the dynamics of monogamy, polygamy and promiscuity in the context of rapid occupational change. It shows how a wide spectrum of productive and welfare outcomes is generated through sexual experimentation, which calls into question conventional concepts of prostitution, marriage and gender power relations
Plasticity and learning in a network of coupled phase oscillators
A generalized Kuramoto model of coupled phase oscillators with slowly varying
coupling matrix is studied. The dynamics of the coupling coefficients is driven
by the phase difference of pairs of oscillators in such a way that the coupling
strengthens for synchronized oscillators and weakens for non-synchronized
pairs. The system possesses a family of stable solutions corresponding to
synchronized clusters of different sizes. A particular cluster can be formed by
applying external driving at a given frequency to a group of oscillators. Once
established, the synchronized state is robust against noise and small
variations in natural frequencies. The phase differences between oscillators
within the synchronized cluster can be used for information storage and
retrieval.Comment: 10 page

Changing times in England: the influence on geography teachersâ professional practice
School geography in England has been characterised as a pendulum swinging between policies that emphasise curriculum and pedagogy alternately. In this paper, I illustrate the influence of these shifts on geography teacher's professional practice, by drawing on three âmomentsâ from my experience as a student, teacher and teacher educator. Barnett's description of teacher professionalism as a continuous project of âbeingâ illuminates how geography teachers can adapt to competing influences. It reflects teacher professionalism as an unfinished project, which is responsive, but not beholden, to shifting trends, and is informed by how teachers frame and enact policies. I argue that recognising these contextual factors is key to supporting geography teachers in âbeingâ geography education professionals. As education becomes increasingly competitive on a global scale, individual governments are looking internationally for âsolutionsâ to improve educational rankings. In this climate, the future of geography education will rest on how teachers react locally to international trends. Geography teacher educators can support this process by continuing to inform the field through meaningful geography education research, in particular in making the contextual factors of their research explicit. This can be supported through continued successful international collaboration in geography education research

Shape coexistence at the proton drip-line: First identification of excited states in 180Pb
Excited states in the extremely neutron-deficient nucleus, 180Pb, have been
identified for the first time using the JUROGAM II array in conjunction with
the RITU recoil separator at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of
Jyvaskyla. This study lies at the limit of what is presently achievable with
in-beam spectroscopy, with an estimated cross-section of only 10 nb for the
92Mo(90Zr,2n)180Pb reaction. A continuation of the trend observed in 182Pb and
184Pb is seen, where the prolate minimum continues to rise beyond the N=104
mid-shell with respect to the spherical ground state. Beyond mean-field
calculations are in reasonable correspondence with the trends deduced from
experiment.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.
Destabilization of dark states and optical spectroscopy in Zeeman-degenerate atomic systems
We present a general discussion of the techniques of destabilizing dark
states in laser-driven atoms with either a magnetic field or modulated laser
polarization. We show that the photon scattering rate is maximized at a
particular evolution rate of the dark state. We also find that the atomic
resonance curve is significantly broadened when the evolution rate is far from
this optimum value. These results are illustrated with detailed examples of
destabilizing dark states in some commonly-trapped ions and supported by
insights derived from numerical calculations and simple theoretical models.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figure
Improved Measurement of the Positive Muon Lifetime and Determination of the Fermi Constant
The mean life of the positive muon has been measured to a precision of 11 ppm
using a low-energy, pulsed muon beam stopped in a ferromagnetic target, which
was surrounded by a scintillator detector array. The result, tau_mu =
2.197013(24) us, is in excellent agreement with the previous world average. The
new world average tau_mu = 2.197019(21) us determines the Fermi constant G_F =
1.166371(6) x 10^-5 GeV^-2 (5 ppm). Additionally, the precision measurement of
the positive muon lifetime is needed to determine the nucleon pseudoscalar
coupling g_P.Comment: As published version (PRL, July 2007
