Blunder, Error, Mistake, Pitfall: Trawling the OED with the Help of the Historical Thesaurus
The paper considers the lexis of error and examines its use across time in relation to the writing and spelling of English, to grammar and pronunciation. Discussion focuses first on the earliest records of notions of correctness in English language usage, from Ælfric forwards to the emergence of standard English, from the sixteenth century’s growing worries about copiousness and purity of diction to eighteenth-century concerns to prescribe and rule the language. The historical overview is complemented by consideration of the data drawn together by the Glasgow Historical Thesaurus project, its evidence taken from the Oxford English Dictionary and the Dictionary of Old English Corpus. For earlier centuries, there are by far fewer relevant citations, often buried within words wide in reference. With the help of the Historical Thesaurus we drill down to view how views of language mistakes and errors have changed over the centuries of the recorded history of English
Randomized Revenue Monotone Mechanisms for Online Advertising
Online advertising is the main source of revenue for many Internet firms. A
central component of online advertising is the underlying mechanism that
selects and prices the winning ads for a given ad slot. In this paper we study
designing a mechanism for the Combinatorial Auction with Identical Items (CAII)
in which we are interested in selling identical items to a group of bidders
each demanding a certain number of items between and . CAII generalizes
important online advertising scenarios such as image-text and video-pod
auctions [GK14]. In image-text auction we want to fill an advertising slot on a
publisher's web page with either text-ads or a single image-ad and in
video-pod auction we want to fill an advertising break of seconds with
video-ads of possibly different durations.
Our goal is to design truthful mechanisms that satisfy Revenue Monotonicity
(RM). RM is a natural constraint which states that the revenue of a mechanism
should not decrease if the number of participants increases or if a participant
increases her bid.
[GK14] showed that no deterministic RM mechanism can attain PoRM of less than
for CAII, i.e., no deterministic mechanism can attain more than
fraction of the maximum social welfare. [GK14] also design a
mechanism with PoRM of for CAII.
In this paper, we seek to overcome the impossibility result of [GK14] for
deterministic mechanisms by using the power of randomization. We show that by
using randomization, one can attain a constant PoRM. In particular, we design a
randomized RM mechanism with PoRM of for CAII
Gravitational Equilibrium in the Presence of a Positive Cosmological Constant
We reconsider the virial theorem in the presence of a positive cosmological
constant Lambda. Assuming steady state, we derive an inequality of the form rho
>= A (Lambda / 4 pi GN) for the mean density rho of the astrophysical object.
With a minimum at Asphere = 2, its value can increase by several orders of
magnitude as the shape of the object deviates from a spherically symmetric one.
This, among others, indicates that flattened matter distributions like e.g.
clusters or superclusters, with low density, cannot be in gravitational

High rates of suicide and attempted suicide using pesticides in Nickerie, Suriname, South America
Suicide and attempted suicide are identified as a serious mental health problem in Suriname, especially in the district of Nickerie. An epidemiological study in the Nickerie catchment area revealed high rates of suicide (48 per 100,000) and attempted suicide (207 per 100,000) on average in the years 2000–2004. Particularly remarkable is the high number of attempted suicides among males (49%), and the use of pesticides in both fatal (55%) and nonfatal suicidal behavior (44%). Probably this high incidence of suicidal behavior reflects the very poor economic situation of the district, poverty of most of the population, high levels of alcohol misuse, domestic violence, the rigidity of Hindustani culture regarding family traditions, the accessibility of pesticides, and the lack of future perspectives. Health care alone will not be sufficient to tackle this problem. One of the most urgent measures to prevent suicides is to stow away pesticides in locked cabinets with the key held by the proprietor
Time-reversal violating rotation of polarization plane of light in gas placed in electric field
Rotation of polarization plane of light in gas placed in electric field is
considered. Different factors causing this phenomenon are investigated. Angle
of polarization plane rotation for transition 6S_{1/2} - 7S_{1/2} in cesium
(lambda=539 nm) is estimated. The possibility to observe this effect

The Quark-Photon Vertex and the Pion Charge Radius
The rainbow truncation of the quark Dyson-Schwinger equation is combined with
the ladder Bethe-Salpeter equation for the dressed quark-photon vertex to study
the low-momentum behavior of the pion electromagnetic form factor. With model
gluon parameters previously fixed by the pion mass and decay constant, the pion
charge radius is found to be in excellent agreement with the data. When
the often-used Ball-Chiu Ansatz is used to construct the quark-photon vertex
directly from the quark propagator, less than half of is generated.
The remainder of is seen to be attributable to the presence of the
-pole in the solution of the ladder Bethe-Salpeter equation.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figure
Study of KS KL Coupled Decays and KL -Be Interactions with the CMD-2 Detector at VEPP-2M Collider
The integrated luminosity about 4000 inverse nanobarn of around phi meson
mass ( 5 millions of phi mesons) has been collected with the CMD-2 detector at
the VEPP-2M collider. A latest analysis of the KS KL coupled decays based on 30
% of available data is presented in this paper.
The KS KL pairs from phi meson decays were reconstructed in the drift chamber
when both kaons decayed into two charged particles. From a sample of 1423
coupled decays a selection of candidates to the CP violating KL into pi+ pi-
decay was performed. CP violating decays were not identified because of the
domination of events with a KL regenerating at the Be beam pipe into KS and a
background from KL semileptonic decays.
The regeneration cross section of 110 MeV/c KL mesons was found to be 53 +-
17 mb in agreement with theoretical expectations. The angular distribution of
KS mesons after regeneration and the total cross section of KL for Be have been

Generation of Large-Scale Vorticity in a Homogeneous Turbulence with a Mean Velocity Shear
An effect of a mean velocity shear on a turbulence and on the effective force
which is determined by the gradient of Reynolds stresses is studied. Generation
of a mean vorticity in a homogeneous incompressible turbulent flow with an
imposed mean velocity shear due to an excitation of a large-scale instability
is found. The instability is caused by a combined effect of the large-scale
shear motions (''skew-induced" deflection of equilibrium mean vorticity) and
''Reynolds stress-induced" generation of perturbations of mean vorticity.
Spatial characteristics, such as the minimum size of the growing perturbations
and the size of perturbations with the maximum growth rate, are determined.
This instability and the dynamics of the mean vorticity are associated with the
Prandtl's turbulent secondary flows. This instability is similar to the
mean-field magnetic dynamo instability. Astrophysical applications of the
