    Replicability of nitrogen recommendations from ramped calibration strips in winter wheat

    Ramped calibration strips have been suggested as a way for grain producers to determine nitrogen needs more accurately. The strips use incrementally increasing levels of nitrogen and enable producers to conduct an experiment in each field to determine nitrogen needs. This study determines whether predictions from the program Ramp Analyzer 1.2 are replicable in Oklahoma hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum). Predictions are derived from 36 individual strips from on-farm experiments—two pairs of adjacent strips at each of nine winter wheat fields in Canadian County, OK. The two pairs of strips within each field were between 120 and 155 m apart. Each strip was analyzed three times during the 2006–2007 growing season. Nitrogen recommendations from Ramp Analyzer 1.2 are not correlated even for strips that were placed side by side, and recommendations from strips in the same field show no more homogeneity than randomly selected strips throughout the county. The results indicate that ramped calibration strips are unlikely to produce accurate nitrogen requirement predictions at any spatial scale, whether at the county level or for subsections of a single field. In contrast, a procedure that uses only measures from the plot with no nitrogen and the plot with the highest level of nitrogen applied does show replicability.     Effects of Home-Based Exercise Training Systems, Combined with Diet, on Cardiometabolic Health

    International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 871-885, 2019. The efficacy of exercise training systems designed to be used in the home on cardiometabolic outcomes remains largely unknown. This investigation included two studies. Study 1 tested the effects a multi-exercise pulley system(NordicTrack Fusion CST with video trainer) and Study 2 an incline trainer (NordicTrack X22i with video trainer), both combined with daily food provision, for 12-weeks on indices of cardiometabolic health. Study 1 enrolled 27 adults (11 men, 16 women, 33.8±4.4 years of age) and Study 2 enrolled 29 adults (11 men, 18 women, 40.8±12.5 years of age). Pre- and post-intervention measurements were performed for body weight, fat mass, lean tissue mass, and visceral fat by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, blood pressure, aerobic fitness and body circumferences. For Study 1, there were significant decreases in body weight, fat mass, visceral fat, diastolic blood pressure (DBP), resting heart rate (RHR), and all circumference sites, while there was an increase in aerobic fitness (all p\u3c0.001). Both males and females exhibited significant improvement in all these outcomes. For Study 2, there were significant decreases in body weight, fat mass, visceral fat, DBP, RHR, all circumference sites (all p\u3c0.001), and lean tissue mass (LTM) (p=0.006), and an increase in aerobic fitness (p\u3c0.001). Both males and females exhibited significant changes in all these outcomes, except LTM which did not change in females. Both studies exhibited high exercise session attendance and high dietary adherence. Overall these data indicate the potential efficacy of home-based training systems, when combined with diet, on selected cardiometabolic outcomes

    Indexing dialysis dose for gender, body size and physical activity: Impact on survival

    Current practice basing dialysis dose on urea distribution volume (V) has been questioned. We explored the impact on survival of scaling dialysis dose (Kt) to parameters reflective of metabolic activity. In a multicentre prospective cohort study of 1500 patients on thrice-weekly haemodialysis, body surface area (BSA) and resting energy expenditure (REE) were estimated using validated equations and physical activity by the Recent Physical Activity Questionnaire. Total energy expenditure (TEE) was estimated from REE and physical activity data. Kt was calculated from delivered (single-pool Kt/V)*Watson V. Kt/BSA, Kt/ REE and Kt/TEE were then calculated at baseline and 6 monthly during follow-up for 2 years. In adjusted Cox models Kt/TEE, Kt/BSA, Kt/REE, in that order, had lower hazard ratios for death than single-pool Kt/V. On the basis of adjusted survival differences, putative minimum target doses were estimated for Kt/BSA as 27119 ml/m 2 and Kt/TEE as 25.79 ml/ kcal. We identified spKt/V values equivalent to these estimated targets, ranging from 1.4 to 1.8 in patient groups based on gender, body size and physical activity. For sedentary patients, the minimum target dose was 1.4 for large males, 1.5 for small males and 1.7 for women. For active patients the target was 1.8 irrespective of gender and body-weight. Patients achieving these individualised minimum targets had greater adjusted two-year survival compared to those achieving conventional minimum targets. Metabolic activity related parameters, such as Kt/TEE and Kt/BSA, may have a clinically important role in scaling haemodialysis dose. Using such parameters or their spKt/V equivalents to adjust minimum target doses based on gender, body size and habitual physical activity may have a positive impact on survival.Peer reviewe

    Yang-Mills theory for bundle gerbes

    Given a bundle gerbe with connection on an oriented Riemannian manifold of dimension at least equal to 3, we formulate and study the associated Yang-Mills equations. When the Riemannian manifold is compact and oriented, we prove the existence of instanton solutions to the equations and also determine the moduli space of instantons, thus giving a complete analysis in this case.     Glory Oscillations in the Index of Refraction for Matter-Waves

    We have measured the index of refraction for sodium de Broglie waves in gases of Ar, Kr, Xe, and nitrogen over a wide range of sodium velocities. We observe glory oscillations -- a velocity-dependent oscillation in the forward scattering amplitude. An atom interferometer was used to observe glory oscillations in the phase shift caused by the collision, which are larger than glory oscillations observed in the cross section. The glory oscillations depend sensitively on the shape of the interatomic potential, allowing us to discriminate among various predictions for these potentials, none of which completely agrees with our measurements

    Low-Temperature Growth of High Resistivity GaAs by Photoassisted Metalorganic Chemical Vapor Deposition

    We report the photoassisted low‐temperature (LT) metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) of high resistivity GaAs. The undoped as‐grown GaAs exhibits a resistivity of ∼106 Ω cm, which is the highest reported for undoped material grown in the MOCVD environment. Photoassisted growth of doped and undoped device quality GaAs has been achieved at a substrate temperature of 400 °C in a modified atmospheric pressure MOCVD reactor. By using silane as a dopant gas, the LT photoassisted doped films have high levels of doping and electron mobilities comparable to those achieved by MOCVD for growth temperatures, Tg≳600 °C

    Magnetohydrodynamic activity inside a sphere

    We present a computational method to solve the magnetohydrodynamic equations in spherical geometry. The technique is fully nonlinear and wholly spectral, and uses an expansion basis that is adapted to the geometry: Chandrasekhar-Kendall vector eigenfunctions of the curl. The resulting lower spatial resolution is somewhat offset by being able to build all the boundary conditions into each of the orthogonal expansion functions and by the disappearance of any difficulties caused by singularities at the center of the sphere. The results reported here are for mechanically and magnetically isolated spheres, although different boundary conditions could be studied by adapting the same method. The intent is to be able to study the nonlinear dynamical evolution of those aspects that are peculiar to the spherical geometry at only moderate Reynolds numbers. The code is parallelized, and will preserve to high accuracy the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) invariants of the system (global energy, magnetic helicity, cross helicity). Examples of results for selective decay and mechanically-driven dynamo simulations are discussed.     Growth or decline in the Church of England during the decade of Evangelism: did the Churchmanship of the Bishop matter?

    The Decade of Evangelism occupied the attention of the Church of England throughout the 1990s. The present study employs the statistics routinely published by the Church of England in order to assess two matters: the extent to which these statistics suggest that the 43 individual dioceses finished the decade in a stronger or weaker position than they had entered it and the extent to which, according to these statistics, the performance of dioceses led by bishops shaped in the Evangelical tradition differed from the performance of dioceses led by bishops shaped in the Catholic tradition. The data demonstrated that the majority of dioceses were performing less effectively at the end of the decade than at the beginning, in terms of a range of membership statistics, and that the rate of decline varied considerably from one diocese to another. The only exception to the trend was provided by the diocese of London, which experienced some growth. The data also demonstrated that little depended on the churchmanship of the diocesan bishop in shaping diocesan outcomes on the performance indicators employed in the study
