Artículo especializado en revista indexadaZinc (Zn) nanoparticles were fabricated by the high-vacuum thermal evapouration technique. The vacuum pressure was modified from 10−6 to 15 Torr and the substrate temperature was increased from room temperature to 100◦C in order to evaluate the changes in the morphological and structural characteristics of the Zn nanoparticles. Well-faceted hexagonal disk shaped nanoparticles were formed at a vacuum pressure of 10−6 Torr with the substrate kept at room temperature. Aggregation and surface irregularities at the edges of the hexagonal nanodisks were observed with further increases in the vacuum pressure. The nanoscale characteristics of the nanodisks were lost at a vacuum pressure of 10−6 Torr and heating the substrate at 100◦C. The nanodisks were transformed into Zn wires at a vacuum pressure of 15 Torr with a substrate temperature of 100◦C. It is suggested that the initial stages of the growth of the Zn wires are governed by the agglomeration of the Zn nanodisks since the structure of the wires was observed to be composed by stacked nanodisks.CONACYT and PRODEP proyecto de red 2014-201

Numerical models for the design and construction of new underground structures at CERN (HL-LHC), Point 5

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the latest, most powerful, world’s largest underground particle accelerator realized on the CERN site. High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) is a new project aimed to upgrade the LHC, at Point 1 (ATLAS in Switzerland) and Point 5 (CMS in France) in order to enhance scientific progress. This paper describes the design and construction issues developed at the Point 5 for the new underground structures, located near the existing LHC tunnel. The project requires new technical infrastructure: an additional shaft with a 12 m-diameter and 60 m-height, cavern with 270 m2 cross-section, approximately 500 meters of tunnels connected to the LHC tunnel, vertical linkage cores and additional technical buildings at the surface. The geological ground model of this site lies in an area covered by Quaternary moraine with two independent aquifers. The bedrock of Molasse comprises sub-horizontal lenses of heterogeneous sedimentary rock, that is known to locally retain hydrocarbons and to have a swelling behaviour. In order to investigate the heterogeneous behaviour of the rock mass composed of several layers with different strengths, numerical calculations have been performed, under a 2D plane strain condition with RS2 9.0 FEM-software.. The purpose of using the software was to design both the rock-supports and the concrete inner lining for the tunnels and the shaft. Data from a comprehensive monitoring system with pre-defined threshold values was compared to the 2D FEM results, confirming the importance of the observational method to verify the assumptions used in the numerical modelling. The execution of the underground works started in April 2018. The excavation of the main un-derground works has been successfully completed without any critical impact on the nearby ex-isting underground structures. The completion of the works is scheduled for September 2022

Artículo asociado a tesis de Doctorado del estudiante Pedro Estanislao Acuña AvilaMetallic Zn nanodisks with hexagonal morphology were obtained onto glass sub- strate under vacuum thermal evaporation. A thermal characterization of Zn nanodiks showed a lower oxidation temperature than source powder Zn. Different thermal treatment on Zn nanodisks played an important role on the morphology, crystal size and surface vibrational modes of ZnO. The growth of ZnO nanoneedles started at the edge of metallic zinc hexagonal structures according with SEM images, the higher temperature the longer needles were grown. XRD diffractogram confirmed the wurtzite structure of ZnO with metallic nuclei. A wide band between 530 and 580 cm−1 of Raman scattering corresponded at surface vibrational modes not observed at higher temperatur

Purpose: A study was made of the changes in gene expression in elite handball athletes, comparing gene modulation before, after and in the absence of an 8-week nutritional intervention with multivitamin/mineral supplements. Methods: Thirteen elite handball athletes (aged 22.9 ± 2.7 years) and 13 sedentary controls (aged 20.9 ± 2.8 years) were included. Three timepoints were established: T0 (baseline conditions); T8 (after 8 weeks of supplementation with a multivitamin/mineral complex); and T16 (after 8 weeks in the absence of supplementation). The expressions of a total 112 of genes were evaluated by RT-qPCR analysis with the QuantStudioTM 12K Flex Real-Time PCR System. Results: The analysis revealed different gene regulation profiles of genes implicated in cell communication, cell energy metabolism, inflammation and the immune system, oxidative stress and muscle function in athletes compared to sedentary controls under resting conditions (upregulated genes: effect size = large, ƞ2 = 1.011 to 1.398, p < 0.05; downregulated genes: effect size = large, ƞ2 = 0.846 and 1.070, p < 0.05, respectively). The nutritional intervention encouraged gene upregulation in elite athletes (p < 0.05). In a follow-up investigation, the IRAK1, CD81, ITGB1, ACADS PDHA2 and GPX1 genes were downregulated in athletes, with a moderate main effect for time-by-group interaction (etaP2 = 0.099 to 0.133; p < 0.05). Additionally, nutritional genes such as MTHFR and THTPA revealed a moderate effect over all the timepoints and group interaction in the study (etaP2 = 0.070 to 0.092; p < 0.05). Conclusions: Elite handball athletes showed a different expression profile in reference to key genes implicated in several sports performance-related functions compared to the sedentary controls, in addition to modulation of gene expression after multivitamin/mineral supplementation.J.M.L was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Education (grant number AP2009-3701) and E.P was supported by the FIS Project PI10/1993 form the Carlos III Health Institute. Tailored Graphenic Structures Directly Grown on Titanium Oxide Boost the Interfacial Charge Transfer

The successful application of titanium oxide-graphene hybrids in the fields of photocatalysis, photovoltaics and photodetection strongly depends on the interfacial contact between both materials. The need to provide a good coupling between the enabling conductor and the photoactive phase prompted us to directly grow conducting graphenic structures on TiO2 crystals. We here report on the direct synthesis of tailored graphenic structures by using Plasma Assisted Chemical Vapour Deposition that present a clean junction with the prototypical titanium oxide (110) surface. Chemical analysis of the interface indicates chemical bonding between both materials. Photocurrent measurements under UV light illumination manifest that the charge transfer across the interface is efficient. Moreover, the influence of the synthesis atmosphere, gas precursor (C2H2) and diluents (Ar, O2), on the interface and on the structure of the as-grown graphenic material is assessed. The inclusion of O2 promotes vertical growth of partially oxidized carbon nanodots/rods with controllable height and density. The deposition with Ar results in continuous graphenic films with low resistivity (6.8x10-6 ohm x m). The synthesis protocols developed here are suitable to produce tailored carbon-semiconductor structures on a variety of practical substrates as thin films, pillars or nanoparticles.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, original research pape

The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence and presence of Chlamydia abortus in Saanen breed female goats from commercial dairy goat farms under intensive production in the municipality of Guanajuato, Mexico. Sera were collected to determine the prevalence of anti-C. abortus IgG antibodies using recombinant enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (rELISA) and cell culture. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to prove the presence of the pathogen in swab samples collected from the vagina and rectum of selected animals. Additionally, foetal tissue samples from a sudden abortion were collected. C. abortus prevalence in female goats of commercial milking farms sampled in Guanajuato, Mexico, was 4.87 % (n=246). Seropositive animals were found in six out of nine (66.6 %) dairy goat farms sampled, and prevalence among animals in individual farms ranged between 3.44 and 13.51 %. C. abortus was detected using PCR in spleen tissue from the aborted foetus. PCR-based detection, as well as isolation from vaginal and rectal swabs, was not possible in the present study. Isolation through cell culture was also unsuccessful from aborted foetal tissue samples. In conclusion, the results from rELISA and PCR show that C. abortus is present in dairy goat farms in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico

Framework to Evaluate Emerging Systems Designed to Health Field

Get PDF
In recent years, several information and communication technology systems have emerged as tools to improve sleep quality. Research reveals that poor sleep quality may produce irritability and deficits in performance, concentration, and learning ability in the short term, and is associated with chronic disease in the long term. ICT proposals range from the old Polysomnography (PSG) to innovative systems, such as wearable devices, smartphone applications, and suites of sensors embedded in the users’ environment. Since these technological developments concern a health issue, they have raised important questions regarding their reliability and the level of rigor of the evaluations to which they are submitted. We found that some of the emerging systems that we studied, do not meet the requirements that health science demands to be accepted as clinical tools. The rationale behind this apparent weakness is explained with arguments from the field of evaluations for health interventions and evaluation of technological developments. We propose a framework to evaluate this kind of systems through appropriate scientific methods that provide valuable information to the research. These methods must be performed while designs mature and the feasibility of rigorous evaluations became appropriate

1,4-Cyclohexanedicarboxylato-bridged cobalt coordination polymers: Synthesis, crystal structures and magnetic propertiesThree coordination polymers have been synthesized, using self-assembly solution reactions at ambient conditions, combining Co(II) ion with 1,4-ciclohexanedicarboxylic acid, in the presence of 1,10-phenantrolione and two different 2,20-bipyridines, as co-ligands: [Co(H2O)(cdc)(phen)]n (1); {[Co(H2O)(cdc)(4dmb)] 2H2O}n (2); {[Co(H2O)(cdc)(5dmb)] 3H2O}n (3), where cdc = e,a-cis-1,4-ciclohexanedicarboxylato, phen = 1,10-phenantroline, 4dmb = 4,40-dimethyl-2,20-bipyridine, and 5dmb = 5,50-dimethyl-2,20-bipyridine. Crystallographic studies show that these compounds have one-dimensional (1D) structures; Co(II) in 1–3 is six-coordinated with a distorted-octahedral coordination sphere. Complexes 2 and 3 exhibit a novel bridging motif of the cdc ligand in its equatorial, axial cis configuration. In addition, the solid-state self-assembly of the polymeric structure of 1 gives rise to a 2D supramolecular framework, mainly through hydrogen bonding. In contrast, complex 2 forms an infinite 1D supramolecular array, made of double Co ion rows bridged by hydrogen bonding interactions. Complex 3 generates an intricate 2D supramolecular framework also throughout hydrogen bonding. The thermal stabilities of the three coordination polymers were investigated. Magnetic properties measurements reveal that complexes 1–3 exhibit weak antiferromagnetic ordering with h(C-W) = 9.6, 5.8 and 7.5 K, and E2 = 0.51, 0.16 and 0.28 cm 1, accordingly to Curie-Weiss model and Rueff phenomenological approach, respectively
