The analysis of convergence process of voivodships’ efficiency in Poland using the DEA metod
Since 1999 – when the new administrative division in Poland was introduced – it has been possible to measure and compare standard of living between Polish and other European regions (NUTS II). In 2004 Poland has joined the European Union. Since that year voivodships have become main beneficiaries of the EU funds. The essential part of that aid is related to the EU cohesion policy (convergence objective). According to the fifth cohesion report “cohesion policy has made a significant contribution to spreading growth and prosperity across the Union, while reducing economic, social and territorial disparitiesâ€. However, the differences in standard of living still remains significant between countries as well as between regions within one country. In many researches the level of welfare is measured using “classic†indicators (GDP per capita, GNI per capita, unemployment rate, etc.). In this paper the authors focus on the regional economies’ efficiency. The efficiency will be measured using the Data Envelopment Analysis. Due to the method used, the efficiency will be measured as relative in nature, i.e. will be compared between voivodships within the period of research. The goal of the paper is to analyze variety of relative voivodships’ efficiency in order to answer the question if the dispersion in efficiency is increasing or decreasing over time.

Paradoxical brain embolism in a young man: Is it only a patent foramen ovale?
Paradoxical embolism is considered the major cause of cerebral ischemic events in young patients. The most common cause of paradoxical embolism, which has been widely described, is right-to-left shunting (RLS) at cardiac level through a patent foramen ovale (PFO). Rarely paradoxical embolism can also be caused by RLS at pulmonary level due to pulmonary arteriovenous fistula (PAVF). Herein, we present a case of a young man, who experienced transient ischemic attack (TIA) due to paradoxical embolism, in whom both abovementioned abnormalities coexisted. This coincidence is very rare (noted in only 1% of patients with cryptogenic stroke or TIA), but it highlights the importance of searching for extracardiac RLS in patients with cryptogenic stroke, even if a PFO has been detected
Real-Time Detection of Optical Transients with RAPTOR
Fast variability of optical objects is an interesting though poorly explored
subject in modern astronomy. Real-time data processing and identification of
transient celestial events in the images is very important for such study as it
allows rapid follow-up with more sensitive instruments. We discuss an approach
which we have developed for the RAPTOR project, a pioneering closed-loop system
combining real-time transient detection with rapid follow-up. RAPTOR's data
processing pipeline is able to identify and localize an optical transient
within seconds after the observation. The testing we performed so far have been
confirming the effectiveness of our method for the optical transient detection.
The software pipeline we have developed for RAPTOR can easily be applied to the
data from other experiments.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, to appear in SPIE proceedings vol. 484
