This paper examines the progression of the Kumarangk (Hindmarsh Island) case, and the legal construction of public participation in the making of political decsions. In the process of examining the politics of competing interests in land, the paper reflects on the challenge of the tension between Indigenous interests in land and developmentalism in relation to the Australian jurisprudence of procedural fairness and natural justice. The argument running through the article concerns the question of how the liberal restraint on power, where that power creates rather than infringes upon rights, may also play its role in the maintenance of relations of settler-colonial dispossession

Die Organisierung der Seele: Elias und Foucault über Disziplin und das Selbst

Aufhauend auf einem systematischen Vergleich der Theorien von Weber, Elias und Foucault wird eine Kritik der These vom »Zivilisationsprozeß « formuliert, in deren Mittelpunkt der Begriff der »Zivilisationsoffensive« steht. Danach ist die Rationalisierung menschlicher Subjektivität in der Geschichte moderner Gesellschaften weniger einem anonymen Prozeß zunehmender » Verflechtung« geschuldet, als vielmehr dem interessebedingten Handeln konkreter Akteure im historischen Prozeß. Untermauert wird diese Kritik an Elias durch eine Konfrontation seiner Thesen mit den Ergebnissen der neueren Sozialgeschichtsforschung

Towards process-figurational theory in organization studies

This paper outlines the significance of Elias’s work as an alternative solution for many of the core conceptual problems in organization studies as well as the distinctive contribution of The Court Society, sketches the main elements of the ways in which his ideas have been taken up by organisation scholars to date, concentrating on a selection of studies drawing on Elias, and concludes with some reflections on the future directions that process-figurational theory might take in organization studies. The core line of argument is that Elias provides a range of powerful theoretical resources to transcend many of the problems usually addressed through the work of Foucault, actor-network theory, postmodernist and post-structuralist theory, especially the supposed agency/structure problem, constituting an alternative and effective analysis of organizational life that is anchored in the relational and processual strands of classical sociological theory

Confirmation of a metastasis-specific microRNA signature in primary colon cancer

The identification of patients with high-risk stage II colon cancer who may benefit from adjuvant therapy may allow the clinical approach to be tailored for these patients based on an understanding of tumour biology. MicroRNAs have been proposed as markers of the prognosis or treatment response in colorectal cancer. Recently, a 2-microRNA signature (l et-7i and miR-10b) was proposed to identify colorectal cancer patients at risk of developing distant metastasis. We assessed the prognostic value of this signature and additional candidate microRNAs in an independent, clinically well-defined, prospectively collected cohort of primary colon cancer patients including stage I-II colon cancer without and stage III colon cancer with adjuvant treatment. The 2-microRNA signature specifically predicted hepatic recurrence in the stage I-II group, but not the overall ability to develop distant metastasis. The addition of miR-30b to the 2-microRNA signature allowed the prediction of both distant metastasis and hepatic recurrence in patients with stage I-II colon cancer who did not receive adjuvant chemotherapy. Available gene expression data allowed us to associate m iR-30b expression with axon guidance and l et-7i expression with cell adhesion, migration, and motility

The Emergence and Development of Association Football: Influential Sociocultural Factors in Victorian Birmingham

This article explores the interdependent, complex sociocultural factors that facilitated the emergence and diffusion of football in Birmingham. The focus is the development of football in the city, against the backdrop of the numerous social changes in Victorian Birmingham. The aim is to fill a gap in the existing literature which seemingly overlooked Birmingham as a significant footballing centre, and the ‘ordinary and everyday’ aspects of the game’s early progression. Among other aspects, particular heed is paid to the working classes’ involvement in football, as previous literature has often focused on the middle classes and their influence on and participation in organized sport. As the agency of the working classes along with their mass participation and central role in the game’s development is unfolded, it is argued that far from being passive cultural beings, the working classes, from the beginnings, actively negotiated the development of their own emergent football culture
