The sedimentary legacy of a palaeo-ice stream on the shelf of the southern Bellingshausen Sea: Clues to West Antarctic glacial history during the Late Quaternary
A major trough ("Belgica Trough") eroded by a palaeo-ice stream crosses the continental shelf of the southern Bellingshausen Sea (West Antarctica) and is associated with a trough mouth fan ("Belgica TMF") on the adjacent continental slope. Previous marine geophysical and geological studies investigated the bathymetry and geomorphology of Belgica Trough and Belgica TMF, erosional and depositional processes associated with bedform formation, and the temporal and spatial changes in clay mineral provenance of subglacial and glaciomarine sediments.
Here, we present multi-proxy data from sediment cores recovered from the shelf and uppermost slope in the southern Bellingshausen Sea and reconstruct the ice-sheet history since the last glacial maximum (LGM) in this poorly studied area of West Antarctica. We combined new data (physical properties, sedimentary structures, geochemical and grain-size data) with published data (shear strength, clay mineral assemblages) to refine a previous facies classification for the sediments. The multi-proxy approach allowed us to distinguish four main facies types and to assign them to the following depositional settings: 1) subglacial, 2) proximal grounding-line, 3) distal sub-ice shelf/sub-sea ice, and 4) seasonal open-marine. In the seasonal open-marine fades we found evidence for episodic current-induced winnowing of near-seabed sediments on the middle to outer shelf and at the uppermost slope during the late Holocene.
In addition, we obtained data on excess Pb-210 activity at three core sites and 44 AMS C-14 dates from the acid-insoluble fraction of organic matter (AIO) and calcareous (micro-) fossils, respectively, at 12 sites. These chronological data enabled us to reconstruct, for the first time, the timing of the last advance and retreat of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) and the Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet (APIS) in the southern Bellingshausen Sea. We used the down-core variability in sediment provenance inferred from clay mineral changes to identify the most reliable AIO C-14 ages for ice-sheet retreat. The palaeo-ice stream advanced through Belgica Trough after similar to 36.0 corrected C-14 ka before present (B.P.). It retreated from the outer shelf at similar to 25.5 ka B.P, the middle shelf at similar to 19.8 ka B.P., the inner shelf in Eltanin Bay at similar to 12.3 ka B.P., and the inner shelf in Ronne Entrance at similar to 6.3 ka B.P. The retreat of the WAIS and APIS occurred slowly and stepwise, and may still be in progress. This dynamical ice-sheet behaviour has to be taken into account for the interpretation of recent and the prediction of future mass-balance changes in the study area. The glacial history of the southern Bellingshausen Sea is unique when compared to other regions in West Antarctica, but some open questions regarding its chronology need to be addressed by future work. Adamtsl2 deletion results in bronchial fibrillin microfibril accumulation and bronchial epithelial dysplasia: A novel mouse model providing insights on geleophysic dysplasia
Mutations in the secreted glycoprotein ADAMTSL2 cause recessive geleophysic dysplasia (GD) in humans and Musladin–Lueke syndrome (MLS) in dogs. GD is a severe, often lethal, condition presenting with short stature, brachydactyly, stiff skin, joint contractures, tracheal-bronchial stenosis and cardiac valve anomalies, whereas MLS is non-lethal and characterized by short stature and severe skin fibrosis. Although most mutations in fibrillin-1 (FBN1) cause Marfan syndrome (MFS), a microfibril disorder leading to transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ) dysregulation, domain-specific FBN1 mutations result in dominant GD. ADAMTSL2 has been previously shown to bind FBN1 and latent TGFβ-binding protein-1 (LTBP1). Here, we investigated mice with targeted Adamtsl2 inactivation as a new model for GD (Adamtsl2−/− mice). An intragenic lacZ reporter in these mice showed that ADAMTSL2 was produced exclusively by bronchial smooth muscle cells during embryonic lung development. Adamtsl2−/− mice, which died at birth, had severe bronchial epithelial dysplasia with abnormal glycogen-rich inclusions in bronchial epithelium resembling the cellular anomalies described previously in GD. An increase in microfibrils in the bronchial wall was associated with increased FBN2 and microfibril-associated glycoprotein-1 (MAGP1) staining, whereas LTBP1 staining was increased in bronchial epithelium. ADAMTSL2 was shown to bind directly to FBN2 with an affinity comparable to FBN1. The observed extracellular matrix (ECM) alterations were associated with increased bronchial epithelial TGFβ signaling at 17.5 days of gestation; however, treatment with TGFβ-neutralizing antibody did not correct the epithelial dysplasia. These investigations reveal a new function of ADAMTSL2 in modulating microfibril formation, and a previously unsuspected association with FBN2. Our studies suggest that the bronchial epithelial dysplasia accompanying microfibril dysregulation in Adamtsl2−/− mice cannot be reversed by TGFβ neutralization, and thus might be mediated by other mechanisms
Chandra ACIS Survey of M33 (ChASeM33): X-ray Imaging Spectroscopy of M33SNR21, the Brightest X-ray Supernova Remnant in M33
We present and interpret new X-ray data for M33SNR21, the brightest X-ray
supernova remnant (SNR) in M33. The SNR is in seen projection against (and
appears to be interacting with) the bright HII region NGC592. Data for this
source were obtained as part of the Chandra ACIS Survey of M33 (ChASeM33) Very
Large Project. The nearly on-axis Chandra data resolve the SNR into a ~5"
diameter (20 pc at our assumed M33 distance of 817+/-58 kpc) slightly
elliptical shell. The shell is brighter in the east, which suggests that it is
encountering higher density material in that direction. The optical emission is
coextensive with the X-ray shell in the north, but extends well beyond the
X-ray rim in the southwest. Modeling the X-ray spectrum with an absorbed sedov
model yields a shock temperature of 0.46(+0.01,-0.02) keV, an ionization
timescale of n_e t = cm s, and
half-solar abundances (0.45 (+0.12, -0.09)). Assuming Sedov dynamics gives an
average preshock H density of 1.7 +/- 0.3 cm. The dynamical age estimate
is 6500 +/- 600 yr, while the best fit value and derived gives
8200 +/- 1700 yr; the weighted mean of the age estimates is 7600 +/- 600 yr. We
estimate an X-ray luminosity (0.25-4.5 keV) of (1.2 +/- 0.2) times
ergs s (absorbed), and (1.7 +/- 0.3) times ergs s
(unabsorbed), in good agreement with the recent XMM-Newton determination. No
significant excess hard emission was detected; the luminosity ergs s (2-8 keV) for any hard point source.Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures (3 color). ApJ (in press
'The language of the naked facts': Joseph Priestley on language and revealed religion
Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) is usually remembered for his experiments in natural
philosophy and celebrated for his isolation of the gas we now call oxygen. However,
Priestley had a wide range of interests and published extensively on education, history,
politics, political philosophy, language, theology and religion. He dedicated his life to
elucidating a coherent set of epistemological, metaphysical and theological principles
which he believed explained the human mind, the natural world and the nature of God
and revelation. Recent studies of Priestley have emphasised the difficulties that arise
from isolating the various aspects of his thought and the fruitful outcome of uncovering
the many connections between his diverse areas of study. With this in mind, the present
dissertation aims to elucidate the relationship between two aspects of Priestley’s thought
that have not previously been studied together. It examines his theory of language and
argument alongside his work on theology and the evidences of revelation. Chapter One
provides an overview of Priestley’s epistemology, focusing on his work on induction,
judgment and assent. Chapter Two looks at Priestley’s analysis of the role of the
passions in our assent to propositions and the progressive generation of the personality,
while paying particular attention to the origins of figurative language. Chapter Three
examines Priestley’s theory of language development including the relationship
between figurative language and the extension of vocabulary and the close connection
between language and culture. Chapter Four demonstrates that Priestley’s discussion of
the evidences of revealed religion is structured around his theory of assent and
judgment. It also explains how assent to revelation is essential for the generation and
transcendence of the ‘self’. Chapter Five brings all the themes of the dissertation
together in a discussion of Priestley’s rational theology and examines his analysis of
figurative language in scripture
Antarctic ice sheet paleo-constraint database
We present a database of observational constraints on past Antarctic Ice Sheet changes during the last glacial cycle intended to consolidate the observations that represent our understanding of past Antarctic changes, for state-space estimation, and paleo-model calibrations. The database is a major expansion of the initial work of Briggs and Tarasov (2013). It includes new data types and multi-tier data quality assessment. The updated constraint database “AntICE2” consists of observations of past grounded and floating ice sheet extent, past ice thickness, past relative sea level, borehole temperature profiles, and present-day bedrock displacement rates. In addition to paleo-observations, the present-day ice sheet geometry and surface ice velocities are incorporated to constrain the present-day ice sheet configuration. The method by which the data is curated using explicitly defined criteria is detailed. Moreover, the observational uncertainties are specified. The methodology by which the constraint database can be applied to evaluate a given ice sheet reconstruction is discussed. The implementation of the “AntICE2” database for Antarctic Ice Sheet model calibrations will improve Antarctic Ice Sheet predictions during past warm and cold periods and yield more robust paleo model spin ups for forecasting future ice sheet changes
Chandra ACIS Survey of M33 (ChASeM33): A First Look
We present an overview of the Chandra ACIS Survey of M33 (ChASeM33): A Deep
Survey of the Nearest Face-on Spiral Galaxy. The 1.4 Ms survey covers the
galaxy out to R \approx 18\arcmin (\approx 4 kpc). These data provide the
most intensive, high spatial resolution assessment of the X-ray source
populations available for the confused inner regions of M33. Mosaic images of
the ChASeM33 observations show several hundred individual X-ray sources as well
as soft diffuse emission from the hot interstellar medium. Bright, extended
emission surrounds the nucleus and is also seen from the giant \hii regions NGC
604 and IC 131. Fainter extended emission and numerous individual sources
appear to trace the inner spiral structure. The initial source catalog, arising
from ~2/3 of the expected survey data, includes 394 sources significant
at the confidence level or greater, down to a limiting luminosity
(absorbed) of 1.6\ergs{35} (0.35 -- 8.0 keV). The hardness ratios of the
sources separate those with soft, thermal spectra such as supernova remnants
from those with hard, non-thermal spectra such as X-ray binaries and background
active galactic nuclei. Emission extended beyond the Chandra point spread
function is evident in 23 of the 394 sources. Cross-correlation of the ChASeM33
sources against previous catalogs of X-ray sources in M33 results in matches
for the vast majority of the brighter sources and shows 28 ChASeM33 sources
within 10\arcsec of supernova remnants identified by prior optical and radio
searches. This brings the total number of such associations to 31 out of 100

The LEECH Exoplanet Imaging Survey: Limits on Planet Occurrence Rates Under Conservative Assumptions
We present the results of the largest (m) direct
imaging survey for exoplanets to date, the Large Binocular Telescope
Interferometer (LBTI) Exozodi Exoplanet Common Hunt (LEECH). We observed 98
stars with spectral types from B to M. Cool planets emit a larger share of
their flux in compared to shorter wavelengths, affording LEECH an
advantage in detecting low-mass, old, and cold-start giant planets. We
emphasize proximity over youth in our target selection, probing physical
separations smaller than other direct imaging surveys. For FGK stars, LEECH
outperforms many previous studies, placing tighter constraints on the hot-start
planet occurrence frequency interior to au. For less luminous,
cold-start planets, LEECH provides the best constraints on giant-planet
frequency interior to au around FGK stars. Direct imaging survey
results depend sensitively on both the choice of evolutionary model (e.g., hot-
or cold-start) and assumptions (explicit or implicit) about the shape of the
underlying planet distribution, in particular its radial extent. Artificially
low limits on the planet occurrence frequency can be derived when the shape of
the planet distribution is assumed to extend to very large separations, well
beyond typical protoplanetary dust-disk radii ( au), and when
hot-start models are used exclusively. We place a conservative upper limit on
the planet occurrence frequency using cold-start models and planetary
population distributions that do not extend beyond typical protoplanetary
dust-disk radii. We find that of FGK systems can host a 7 to 10
planet from 5 to 50 au. This limit leaves open the

Can surface flux transport account for the weak polar field in cycle 23?
To reproduce the weak magnetic field on the polar caps of the Sun observed
during the declining phase of cycle 23 poses a challenge to surface flux
transport models since this cycle has not been particularly weak. We use a
well-calibrated model to evaluate the parameter changes required to obtain
simulated polar fields and open flux that are consistent with the observations.
We find that the low polar field of cycle 23 could be reproduced by an increase
of the meridional flow by 55% in the last cycle. Alternatively, a decrease of
the mean tilt angle of sunspot groups by 28% would also lead to a similarly low
polar field, but cause a delay of the polar field reversals by 1.5 years in

Production and Characterization of Attosecond Bunch Trains
We report the production of optically spaced attosecond microbunches produced by the inverse Free Electron Laser (IFEL) process. The IFEL is driven by a Ti:sapphire laser synchronized with the electron beam. The IFEL is followed by a magnetic chicane that converts the energy modulation into the longitudinal microbunch structure. The microbunch train is characterized by observing Coherent Optical Transition Radiation (COTR) at multiple harmonics of the bunching. The experimental results are compared with 1D analytic theory showing good agreement. Estimates of the bunching factors are given and correspond to a microbunch length of 350as fwhm. The formation of stable attosecond electron pulse trains marks an important step towards direct laser acceleration
