Multi-region relaxed magnetohydrodynamics with anisotropy and flow
We present an extension of the multi-region relaxed magnetohydrodynamics
(MRxMHD) equilibrium model that includes pressure anisotropy and general plasma
flows. This anisotropic extension to our previous isotropic model is motivated
by Sun and Finn's model of relaxed anisotropic magnetohydrodynamic equilibria.
We prove that as the number of plasma regions becomes infinite, our anisotropic
extension of MRxMHD reduces to anisotropic ideal MHD with flow. The
continuously nested flux surface limit of our MRxMHD model is the first
variational principle for anisotropic plasma equilibria with general flow

Prosomal-width-to-weight relationships in American horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus): examining conversion factors used to estimate landings
Horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus) are valued by many
stakeholders, including the commercial fishing industry, biomedical companies, and environmental interest groups. We designed a study to test the accuracy of the conversion factors that were used by NOAA Fisheries and state agencies to estimate horseshoe crab landings before mandatory
reporting that began in 1998. Our results indicate that the NOAA Fisheries conversion factor consistently overestimates the weight of male horseshoe crabs, particularly those from New England populations. Because of the inaccuracy of this and other conversion factors, states are now mandated to report the number (not biomass) and sex of landed horseshoe
crabs. However, accurate estimates of biomass are still necessary for use in prediction models that are being developed to better manage the horseshoe crab fishery. We recommend that managers use the conversion factors presented in this study to convert current landing data from numbers to biomass of harvested horseshoe crabs
for future assessments
Performance of Axial-Flow Supersonic Compressor of XJ55-FF-1 Turbojet Engine. II - Performance of Inlet Guide Vanes as Separate Component
The inlet wide vanes for the supersonic compressor of the XJ55-FF-1 engine were studied as a separate component in order to determine the performance prior to installation in the compressor test rig. Turning angles approached design values, and increased approximately to through the inlet Mach number range from 0.30 to choke. A sharp break in turning angle was experienced when the choke condition was reached. The total-pressure loss through the guide vanes was approximately 1 percent for the unchoked conditions and from 5 to 6 percent when choked
Investigation of generic hub fairing and pylon shapes to reduce hub drag
Reported are investigations of fairing configurations pointed toward substantially reducing hub drag. Experimental investigations have shown the importance of hub-fairing camber, lower-surface curvature, and relative size of the drag. The significance of pylon and hub fairings in combination have also been shown. Model test data presented here documented these findings, and also showed the effect of gaps and hub-fairing inclination angle on drag. From a drag standpoint, the best hub fairing had a circular arc, upper-surface curvature, a flat bottom surface, and 8.75% camber
Casimir Effects in Renormalizable Quantum Field Theories
We review the framework we and our collaborators have developed for the study
of one-loop quantum corrections to extended field configurations in
renormalizable quantum field theories. We work in the continuum, transforming
the standard Casimir sum over modes into a sum over bound states and an
integral over scattering states weighted by the density of states. We express
the density of states in terms of phase shifts, allowing us to extract
divergences by identifying Born approximations to the phase shifts with low
order Feynman diagrams. Once isolated in Feynman diagrams, the divergences are
canceled against standard counterterms. Thus regulated, the Casimir sum is
highly convergent and amenable to numerical computation. Our methods have
numerous applications to the theory of solitons, membranes, and quantum field

Supersymmetric minisuperspace with non-vanishing fermion number
The Lagrangean of supergravity is dimensionally reduced to one
(time-like) dimension assuming spatial homogeneity of any Bianchi type within
class A of the classification of Ellis and McCallum. The algebra of the
supersymmetry generators, the Lorentz generators, the diffeomorphism generators
and the Hamiltonian generator is determined and found to close. In contrast to
earlier work, infinitely many physical states with non-vanishing even fermion
number are found to exist in these models, indicating that minisuperspace
models in supergravity may be just as useful as in pure gravity.Comment: 4 page
Noise-Activated Escape from a Sloshing Potential Well
We treat the noise-activated escape from a one-dimensional potential well of
an overdamped particle, to which a periodic force of fixed frequency is
applied. We determine the boundary layer behavior, and the physically relevant
length scales, near the oscillating well top. We show how stochastic behavior
near the well top generalizes the behavior first determined by Kramers, in the
case without forcing. Both the case when the forcing dies away in the weak
noise limit, and the case when it does not, are examined. We also discuss the

Floquet Analysis of Atom Optics Tunneling Experiments
Dynamical tunneling has been observed in atom optics experiments by two
groups. We show that the experimental results are extremely well described by
time-periodic Hamiltonians with momentum quantized in units of the atomic
recoil. The observed tunneling has a well defined period when only two Floquet
states dominate the dynamics. Beat frequencies are observed when three Floquet
states dominate. We find frequencies which match those observed in both
experiments. The dynamical origin of the dominant Floquet states is identified.Comment: Accepted in Physical Review
