Small-scale star formation at low metallicity
Massive star formation in a low metallicity environment is investigated by studying the morphology of small HII regions in the Small Magellanic Cloud. A classification scheme based upon the symmetry of form in the light of H-alpha is proposed to make possible an examination of the properties of blister candidates with respect to nebulas embedded in a more uniform medium. A new diagnostic of size is developed to derive quantitative information about the ionized gas and ionizing stars. The asymmetrical surface-brightness distribution of many HII regions demonstrates that massive stars often form at the edge of dense neutral clouds. However, the existence of many symmetrical nebulas with similar sizes, luminosities, and surface brightnesses shows that massive star formation often occurs within these clouds. Nevertheless, the statistics of the two different forms indicate that the rate of massive star formation declines less steeply with radius across host clouds than in the Milky Way, suggesting that external triggering may play a larger role in initiating star formation

Surviving Domestic Violence and Navigating the Academy: An Autoethnography
This autoethnography takes a critical view of my experiences surviving domestic violence while navigating the university’s resources to support survivors as well as my academic life. I turn to Spade’s (2015) critical trans politics in order to complicate the notion of higher education structures as neutral and to question who benefits from existing domestic violence survivor support programs and procedures. Guided by Nash’s (2004) guidelines for scholarly personal narrative, I tell my story of surviving in five parts, beginning with initial conversations and continuing with processes of surviving, leaving home, mandatory reporting, and (not) learning. Throughout the narrative, I analyze how my experiences illuminate broader implications for higher education. I conclude with recommendations for critically supporting survivors, and reflections on my own experiences and life a year later

Each of the chambers is separated by a movable separator member. The servicing tool of this invention employs a rod which is to connect with the separator and by observation of the position of the rod with respect to the gauge body, the location of the separator is ascertained even though it is not directly observable
A Deep Learning Approach for Detecting Copy Number Variation in Next-Generation Sequencing Data

However, properly detecting changes in copy numbers of sequences remains a difficult problem, especially in lower quality or lower coverage next-generation sequencing data. Here, inspired by recent applications of machine learning in genomics, we describe a method to detect duplications and deletions in short-read sequencing data. In low coverage data, machine learning appears to be more powerful in the detection of CNVs than the gold-standard methods of coverage estimation alone, and of equal power in high coverage data. We also demonstrate how replicating training sets allows a more precise detection of CNVs, even identifying novel CNVs in two genomes previously surveyed thoroughly for CNVs using long read data

Predicting the outcomes of treatment to eradicate the latent reservoir for HIV-1
Massive research efforts are now underway to develop a cure for HIV
infection, allowing patients to discontinue lifelong combination antiretroviral
therapy (ART). New latency-reversing agents (LRAs) may be able to purge the
persistent reservoir of latent virus in resting memory CD4+ T cells, but the
degree of reservoir reduction needed for cure remains unknown. Here we use a
stochastic model of infection dynamics to estimate the efficacy of LRA needed
to prevent viral rebound after ART interruption. We incorporate clinical data
to estimate population-level parameter distributions and outcomes. Our findings
suggest that approximately 2,000-fold reductions are required to permit a
majority of patients to interrupt ART for one year without rebound and that
rebound may occur suddenly after multiple years. Greater than 10,000-fold
reductions may be required to prevent rebound altogether. Our results predict
large variation in rebound times following LRA therapy, which will complicate
clinical management. This model provides benchmarks for moving LRAs from the
lab to the clinic and can aid in the design and interpretation of clinical
trials. These results also apply to other interventions to reduce the latent
reservoir and can explain the observed return of viremia after months of
apparent cure in recent bone marrow transplant recipients and an

Adopting Hybrid Pension Plans: Effects of Economic Crisis and Regulatory Reform
This chapter examines the factors that affected plan sponsors’ decisions to convert a traditional defined benefit (DB) plan to a hybrid design during years 2000-2010. We use combined plan level data from Form 5500 filings and financial information from 10-Ks of Fortune 1000 companies to ascertain how the financial status of the plan sponsor, pension plan funding, and costs affected a decision to convert from a traditional DB plan to a hybrid design. We also explore the timing of such conversions relative to major changes in federal regulations, specifically the passage of the Pension Protection Act of 2006 and the ensuing regulations as well as in response to the economic crisis. We examine whether firms that converted in the early part of the decade did so for reasons that were different than those who converted in later part of the decade. We assess the role of the financial status of the plan sponsor in the conversion decision and compare this to the influence of the plan funding ratio, the investment patterns, and the overall plan cost.
