Radiation can never again dominate Matter in a Vacuum Dominated Universe
We demonstrate that in a vacuum-energy-dominated expansion phase,
surprisingly neither the decay of matter nor matter-antimatter annihilation
into relativistic particles can ever cause radiation to once again dominate
over matter in the future history of the universe.Comment: updated version, as it will appear in Phys. Rev D. Title change, and

Enhanced soil quality with reduced tillage and solid manures in organic farming - a synthesis of 15 years
Demands upon the sustainability of farming are increasing in step with climate change and diversity loss. Organic farming offers a viable approach. To further improve organic management, three strategies with potential to enhance soil quality are being tested in a long-term trial since 2002 on a clay loam in temperate Switzerland: reduced tillage vs. ploughing, solid vs. liquid manures and biodynamic preparations. A synthesis of 15 years reveals an increase in topsoil organic carbon (SOC, +25%), microbial biomass (+32%) and activity (+34%) and a shift in microbial communities with conversion from ploughing to reduced tillage. Soils under reduced tillage are more stratified in SOC and nutrients. Additional application of composted manure has increased SOC by 6% compared to pure slurry application, with little impact on soil microbes. Biodynamic preparations have had a minor impact on soil quality. Fertilisation and biodynamic preparations did not affect yields. Both higher and lower yields were harvested in the reduced tillage system in relation to ploughing. The main yield determinants were N supply and higher weed infestation under reduced tillage. Continuously reduced tillage in organic farming has been proven to enhance soil quality at this site, while also presenting more challenges in management
The rationale for fundamental research in space biology: Introduction and background
With the construction of Space Station Freedom, NASA will have available a new platform for experiments in space that promises many advantages over those already flown. Biologists are poised to take advantage of the greater space, the increased power, and especially the long duration of the station for a cascade of innovative experiments in fundamental science that are long overdue. The unique space environment will provide new dimensions for approaching some of the most challenging problems still facing modern biology. Solutions to basic questions about living systems, which may now be grown through many generations in space, will not only explain abnormalities already observed there, but will add to our understanding of how life functions on Earth. Much will be learned about evolution that has built us the way we are, but also about what it has in store for the Earth's species in the future. NASA must not lose this opportunity to contribute to the welfare of the peoples of the Earth while at the same time create knowledge that will enable human exploration of space in the decades ahead
H9N2 Influenza A Viruses from Poultry in Asia Have Human Virus-like Receptor Specificity
AbstractH9N2 influenza A viruses are currently widespread in chickens, quail, and other poultry in Asia and have caused a few cases of influenza in humans. In this study, we found that H9N2 viruses from Hong Kong live bird markets have receptor specificity similar to that of human H3N2 viruses. In addition, the neuraminidase of poultry H9N2 viruses has mutations in its hemadsorbing site, a characteristic resembling that of human H2N2 and H3N2 viruses but differing from that of other avian viruses. Peculiar features of surface glycoproteins of H9N2 viruses from Hong Kong suggest an enhanced propensity for introduction into humans and emphasize the importance of poultry in the zoonotic transmission of influenza viruses
Pneumatic system structure for circulation control aircraft
A plenum for a circulation control rotor aircraft which surrounds the rotor drive shaft (18) and is so constructed that the top (32), outer (38) and bottom (36) walls through compressed air is admitted are fixed to aircraft structure and the inner wall (34) through which air passes to rotor blades (14) rotates with the drive shaft and rotor blades
A generalized approach to model the spectra and radiation dose rate of solar particle events on the surface of Mars
For future human missions to Mars, it is important to study the surface
radiation environment during extreme and elevated conditions. In the long term,
it is mainly Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) modulated by solar activity that
contributes to the radiation on the surface of Mars, but intense solar
energetic particle (SEP) events may induce acute health effects. Such events
may enhance the radiation level significantly and should be detected as
immediately as possible to prevent severe damage to humans and equipment.
However, the energetic particle environment on the Martian surface is
significantly different from that in deep space due to the influence of the
Martian atmosphere. Depending on the intensity and shape of the original solar
particle spectra as well as particle types, the surface spectra may induce
entirely different radiation effects. In order to give immediate and accurate
alerts while avoiding unnecessary ones, it is important to model and well
understand the atmospheric effect on the incoming SEPs including both protons
and helium ions. In this paper, we have developed a generalized approach to
quickly model the surface response of any given incoming proton/helium ion
spectra and have applied it to a set of historical large solar events thus
providing insights into the possible variety of surface radiation environments
that may be induced during SEP events. Based on the statistical study of more
than 30 significant solar events, we have obtained an empirical model for
estimating the surface dose rate directly from the intensities of a power-law
SEP spectra
Cdo patterns the musculature of the esophagus and is required for esophageal motility in mice
Introduction:
Cdo is a multifunctional cell surface co-receptor that promotes Hedgehog signaling during rostroventral midline development and cadherin-mediated signaling during skeletal myogenesis. We report here novel roles for Cdo in patterning of the murine esophageal musculature and esophageal motility disorders such as achalasia
Improved formulation for Faraday rotation characterization
The analysis of complex structures consisting of fibers, films, birefringent, and magnetic materials is greatly aided by the availability of an analysis structure. Jones calculus is typically utilized in the course of such analyses. However, standard Jones calculus does not account for the effect of reflections. An improved formulation for the characterization of Faraday rotation that alleviates this shortcoming is reported here and is integral for the proper analysis of devices employing magneto-optic effects
Recursive Definitions of Monadic Functions
Using standard domain-theoretic fixed-points, we present an approach for
defining recursive functions that are formulated in monadic style. The method
works both in the simple option monad and the state-exception monad of
Isabelle/HOL's imperative programming extension, which results in a convenient
definition principle for imperative programs, which were previously hard to
define.
For such monadic functions, the recursion equation can always be derived
without preconditions, even if the function is partial. The construction is
easy to automate, and convenient induction principles can be derived
automatically.Comment: In Proceedings PAR 2010, arXiv:1012.455
