    Advances in meat animal production in the last twenty years are unprecedented in the history of agriculture. Despite the intensive research in medicine and animal health, disease continues to contribute tremendous economic loss in animal production by direct death loss, decreased feed efficiency, and longer production time. Enteritis of various etiologies, especially in the neonate, is probably the most visible in terms of death loss, and paradoxically, also one of the most insidious causes of economic loss in subclinical cases or cases of permanent intestinal dysfunction

    Pre- and Post-selection paradoxes and contextuality in quantum mechanics

    Many seemingly paradoxical effects are known in the predictions for outcomes of intermediate measurements made on pre- and post-selected quantum systems. Despite appearances, these effects do not demonstrate the impossibility of a noncontextual hidden variable theory, since an explanation in terms of measurement-disturbance is possible. Nonetheless, we show that for every paradoxical effect wherein all the pre- and post- selected probabilities are 0 or 1 and the pre- and post-selected states are nonorthogonal, there is an associated proof of contextuality. This proof is obtained by considering all the measurements involved in the paradoxical effect -- the pre-selection, the post-selection, and the alternative possible intermediate measurements -- as alternative possible measurements at a single time.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure.     Wooden pallets exceed furniture and other solid wood products as the largest single use of sawn hardwood logs in the USA. Most wooden pallets are constructed from two types of pallet parts (Figure 1): (1) stringers—the structural center members that support the pallet load and (2) deckboards—the top and bottom facing members that provide dimensional stability and product placement. There are many variants of this basic design, but most pallets contain solid wood components that are produced from lumber or from the center cant material of logs. Cant material has a high percentage of defect area and is generally not highly valuable for other solid wood products. Therefore, the pallet manufacturing industry must make use of low-quality raw materials and yet produce a product that remains in service for many trips

    Theory and Application of Dissociative Electron Capture in Molecular Identification

    The coupling of an electron monochromator (EM) to a mass spectrometer (MS) has created a new analytical technique, EM-MS, for the investigation of electrophilic compounds. This method provides a powerful tool for molecular identification of compounds contained in complex matrices, such as environmental samples. EM-MS expands the application and selectivity of traditional MS through the inclusion of a new dimension in the space of molecular characteristics--the electron resonance energy spectrum. However, before this tool can realize its full potential, it will be necessary to create a library of resonance energy scans from standards of the molecules for which EM-MS offers a practical means of detection. Here, an approach supplementing direct measurement with chemical inference and quantum scattering theory is presented to demonstrate the feasibility of directly calculating resonance energy spectra. This approach makes use of the symmetry of the transition-matrix element of the captured electron to discriminate between the spectra of isomers. As a way of validating this approach, the resonance values for twenty-five nitrated aromatic compounds were measured along with their relative abundance. Subsequently, the spectra for the isomers of nitrotoluene were shown to be consistent with the symmetry-based model. The initial success of this treatment suggests that it might be possible to predict negative ion resonances and thus create a library of EM-MS standards.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

    Fabrication and performance of selectively oxidized vertical-cavity lasers

    Includes bibliographical references.We report the high yield fabrication and reproducible performance of selectively oxidized vertical-cavity surface emitting lasers. We show that linear oxidation rates of AlGaAs without an induction period allows reproducible fabrication of buried oxide current apertures within monolithic distributed Bragg reflectors. The oxide layers do not induce obvious crystalline defects, and continuous wave operation in excess of 650 h has been obtained. The high yield fabrication enables relatively high laser performance over a wide wavelength span. We observe submilliamp threshold currents over a wavelength range of up to 75 nm, and power conversion efficiencies at 1 mW output power of greater than 20% over a 50-nm wavelength range.The work at Sandia National Laboratories was supported in part by the United States DOE under contract No. DE-AC04-94AL85000
