Seven Steps Towards the Classical World
Classical physics is about real objects, like apples falling from trees,
whose motion is governed by Newtonian laws. In standard Quantum Mechanics only
the wave function or the results of measurements exist, and to answer the
question of how the classical world can be part of the quantum world is a
rather formidable task. However, this is not the case for Bohmian mechanics,
which, like classical mechanics, is a theory about real objects. In Bohmian

A New Discriminator for Gamma-Ray Burst Classification: The Epeak-Fluence Energy Ratio
Using the derived gamma-ray burst E_peak and fluences from the complete BATSE
5B Spectral Catalog, we study the ensemble characteristics of the
E_peak-fluence relation for GRBs. This relation appears to be a physically
meaningful and insightful fundamental discriminator between long and short
bursts. We discuss the results of the lower limit test of the E_peak-E_iso
relations in the E_peak-fluence plane for BATSE bursts with no observed
redshift. Our results confirm the presence of two GRB classes as well as

Hedging in Field Theory Models of the Term Structure
We use path integrals to calculate hedge parameters and efficacy of hedging
in a quantum field theory generalization of the Heath, Jarrow and Morton (HJM)
term structure model which parsimoniously describes the evolution of
imperfectly correlated forward rates. We also calculate, within the model
specification, the effectiveness of hedging over finite periods of time. We use
empirical estimates for the parameters of the model to show that a low

Void Growth in BCC Metals Simulated with Molecular Dynamics using the Finnis-Sinclair Potential
The process of fracture in ductile metals involves the nucleation, growth,
and linking of voids. This process takes place both at the low rates involved
in typical engineering applications and at the high rates associated with
dynamic fracture processes such as spallation. Here we study the growth of a
void in a single crystal at high rates using molecular dynamics (MD) based on
Finnis-Sinclair interatomic potentials for the body-centred cubic (bcc) metals
V, Nb, Mo, Ta, and W. The use of the Finnis-Sinclair potential enables the
study of plasticity associated with void growth at the atomic level at room
temperature and strain rates from 10^9/s down to 10^6/s and systems as large as
128 million atoms. The atomistic systems are observed to undergo a transition
from twinning at the higher end of this range to dislocation flow at the lower
end. We analyze the simulations for the specific mechanisms of plasticity
associated with void growth as dislocation loops are punched out to accommodate
the growing void. We also analyse the process of nucleation and growth of voids
in simulations of nanocrystalline Ta expanding at different strain rates. We
comment on differences in the plasticity associated with void growth in the bcc
metals compared to earlier studies in face-centred cubic (fcc) metals.Comment: 24 pages, 12 figure
Anomalies in low-energy Gamma-Ray Burst spectra with the Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor
A Band function has become the standard spectral function used to describe
the prompt emission spectra of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). However, deviations
from this function have previously been observed in GRBs detected by BATSE and
in individual GRBs from the \textit{Fermi} era. We present a systematic and
rigorous search for spectral deviations from a Band function at low energies in
a sample of the first two years of high fluence, long bursts detected by the
\textit{Fermi} Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GBM). The sample contains 45 bursts
with a fluence greater than 2 erg / cm (10 - 1000 keV). An
extrapolated fit method is used to search for low-energy spectral anomalies,
whereby a Band function is fit above a variable low-energy threshold and then
the best fit function is extrapolated to lower energy data. Deviations are
quantified by examining residuals derived from the extrapolated function and
the data and their significance is determined via comprehensive simulations
which account for the instrument response. This method was employed for both
time-integrated burst spectra and time-resolved bins defined by a signal to
noise ratio of 25 and 50 . Significant deviations are evident
in 3 bursts (GRB\,081215A, GRB\,090424 and GRB\,090902B) in the time-integrated
sample ( 7%) and 5 bursts (GRB\,090323, GRB\,090424, GRB\,090820,
GRB\,090902B and GRB\,090926A) in the time-resolved sample ( 11%).} The
advantage of the systematic, blind search analysis is that it can demonstrate
the requirement for an additional spectral component without any prior
knowledge of the nature of that extra component. Deviations are found in a
large fraction of high fluence GRBs; fainter GRBs may not have sufficient
statistics for deviations to be found using this method
Reading Casey: Structuring the Woman\u27s Decisionmaking Process
In this Article, Professor Goldstein argues that the primary concerns of Planned Parenthood v. Casey\u27s joint opinion were expressive, not regulatory, in nature: to allow the state more leeway to structure the woman\u27s decisionmaking process and to engage in its own speech regarding her exercise of her procreative choice. To this end, he identifies three models by which the state can engage in such structuring: the autonomy informed consent model, the dialogical model, and the government speech model. He then analyzes Casey in light of each model to understand what limits Casey places on state abortion regulation. He also develops an argument for the special speech rights of the learned professions in order to discuss the right of the physician to counter the state\u27s message, even when the state funds the physician\u27s speech under Rust v. Sullivan. In conclusion, he offers his own suggestions about the appropriate subjects of a state-sponsored conversation about abortio
Clinicopathological evaluation of chronic traumatic encephalopathy in players of American football
IMPORTANCE: Players of American football may be at increased risk of long-term neurological conditions, particularly chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
OBJECTIVE: To determine the neuropathological and clinical features of deceased football players with CTE.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Case series of 202 football players whose brains were donated for research. Neuropathological evaluations and retrospective telephone clinical assessments (including head trauma history) with informants were performed blinded. Online questionnaires ascertained athletic and military history.
EXPOSURES: Participation in American football at any level of play.
MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Neuropathological diagnoses of neurodegenerative diseases, including CTE, based on defined diagnostic criteria; CTE neuropathological severity (stages I to IV or dichotomized into mild [stages I and II] and severe [stages III and IV]); informant-reported athletic history and, for players who died in 2014 or later, clinical presentation, including behavior, mood, and cognitive symptoms and dementia.
RESULTS: Among 202 deceased former football players (median age at death, 66 years [interquartile range, 47-76 years]), CTE was neuropathologically diagnosed in 177 players (87%; median age at death, 67 years [interquartile range, 52-77 years]; mean years of football participation, 15.1 [SD, 5.2]), including 0 of 2 pre–high school, 3 of 14 high school (21%), 48 of 53 college (91%), 9 of 14 semiprofessional (64%), 7 of 8 Canadian Football League (88%), and 110 of 111 National Football League (99%) players. Neuropathological severity of CTE was distributed across the highest level of play, with all 3 former high school players having mild pathology and the majority of former college (27 [56%]), semiprofessional (5 [56%]), and professional (101 [86%]) players having severe pathology. Among 27 participants with mild CTE pathology, 26 (96%) had behavioral or mood symptoms or both, 23 (85%) had cognitive symptoms, and 9 (33%) had signs of dementia. Among 84 participants with severe CTE pathology, 75 (89%) had behavioral or mood symptoms or both, 80 (95%) had cognitive symptoms, and 71 (85%) had signs of dementia.

The Fermi GBM Gamma-Ray Burst Spectral Catalog: Four Years Of Data
In this catalog we present the updated set of spectral analyses of GRBs
detected by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) during its first four years
of operation. It contains two types of spectra, time-integrated spectral fits
and spectral fits at the brightest time bin, from 943 triggered GRBs. Four
different spectral models were fitted to the data, resulting in a compendium of
more than 7500 spectra. The analysis was performed similarly, but not
identically to Goldstein et al. 2012. All 487 GRBs from the first two years
have been re-fitted using the same methodology as that of the 456 GRBs in years
three and four. We describe, in detail, our procedure and criteria for the
analysis, and present the results in the form of parameter distributions both
for the observer-frame and rest-frame quantities. The data files containing the
